It's TRUE! Dying people ARE being left in the morgues to DIE!
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 03:39 PM by in_cog_ni_to
Confirmed by many who just watched the repeat! This is SICK!

on edit...I'm sorry...Oprah's show today had a doctor on who said they are taking dying patients to the MORGUE and just leaving them to DIE..all alone, with no family.... I'm just sick...again!

I started a thread about this this morning and someone had posted that what I said wasn't true. Hence, this thread. The other one got locked. :grr:

dying patients in the MORGUE to die. If there's nothing they can do, they just take them to the morgue and leave them to die...alone, no family with them.

94. Just a little clarification . . .
The morgue that was identified appeared to be a makeshift area within the NO airport that was divided off by hanging white sheets. I don't know if the cameras were not allowed in the area or if it was a production decision not to exploit the situation, but that was the only thing shown to the viewer.

The doctor was obviously very moved by what he saw.

Now, the rest of the airport that held the sick and injured did appear to be in a cacophonous state - in other words, less than calm or peaceful. I've seen pictures of people laying on the baggage conveyors. Would anyone here want to die like that?

Given the situation, the medical people there put these people somewhere where they could perhaps die with SOME dignity given the limited resources.

We were later shown the dead on the streets of NO that didn't even have THAT small "luxury." Bodies, just lying there not covered along with the trash blowing around on the street. The doctor took it upon himself to cover up one woman as best he could.

Yes, it is horrific and sad and should have NEVER had to happen and I'm not making excuses for anybody. I just want to make it clear that it's not a typical morgue with the refrigerators, formaldehyde smell and autopsy tables. Given the situation, it was the best they could do.

29. Think it needs to be said
that in the report the doctor said there were 50-60 a day arriving at the airport that they knew they couldn't save.

The place was a madhouse. Wall to wall people waiting for help.
They put those they knew they couldn't save in the morgue to die in peace.

I know that doesn't make this any easier or right, but it was not done out of any kind of disregard or disrespect on the part of the completely overwhelmed medical people there.

47. But they didn't have those resources available.
The medical people were doing everything that they could under horrible conditions. The report was harrowing, just gut-wrenching - literally wall to wall people needing medical attention - about 200 patients an hour, the doctor said.

Guess I just want to make sure that the fingers of blame are not pointed at those medical people who were there. The doctor said they were putting them in the morgue to die in peace.

What else could they do under the circumstances?

It seems the issue is the lack of resources...not the fact that a doctor had to decide which patients to save.

It's a very sad situation.

67. good.
because I watched that part of the program, and the doctor and the rest of the medical people were completely overwhelmed.

When he said they were putting them in the morgue to die in peace, I think a part of him (a part of all of us) was dying as well. It wasn't happening because of the doctor's lack of regard for the dying - just really want to stress that. There's room for blame all around, but not on those who were doing everything they could to provide assistance in the midst of chaos.

80. Those poor doctors and nurses.
I know my husband grieves when he loses a patient he knew he could've saved if things had gone better. He's definitely a different man since med school and residency, seeing all those people die literally under his hands. I can't even begin to imagine how those doctors will cope with this.

Btw, I seriously doubt the patients are alone. I don't know any nurses who would leave a patient alone, even with the major need they're dealing with. I'm sure someone is with them.

90. It's about comfort.
Nurses sit with dying patients every day. Many doctors do too. There are always many patients without any family or anyone to sit with them as they pass on, and the medical staff sits with them. I know my husband has, and I have a nurse friend who has on many occasions.

There's always work being done in the morgue anyway. It's never empty, so it's not like the nurse wouldn't be busy anyway.

70. I think it would be better out of the view of media cameras
The dignity of the dying should mean there are no cameras as they reach their end.

I don't think anyone was covering up the deaths.

The bottom line here is that no one wanted to see these people die. I got the impression the doctors were as upset as everyone here is. But these were/are extraordinary times. The resources weren't there for them to care for everyone.

I wouldn't have wanted to make that decision but if I had a near-death patient and one I could save with the meager supplies on hand I think I know what I'd do.

73. The cameras were there, filming the dr.,
capturing the hell on earth. So it wouldn't appear it was done to hide what was taking place. From what I saw, these people were working under hideous conditions and trying to save those they could.

If you get a chance to see the footage, you'll understand. My heart was breaking almost as much for the completely overwhelmed people trying to save lives as the people who were hurt, sick and dying in the center of this royal fuckup. (please excuse my language - it's the only word I can think of that describes it)

My nurse friend tried all day last Friday to get someone to let her go down and was finally accepted by the Red Cross but has to be "trained" first. She's an ER/ICU nurse, for God's sake! What training does she need? She was almost ready to drive down herself when she was told by FEMA that they wouldn't let her in at all and would send her home, so she decided to work through channels.

Nurses who want to help and are turned away? That's why this is criminal!

No one is safe from the consequences of the disasters that Bush and his evil minions might unleash on us...and any of us could be dying alone in morgues and know for sure that Bush and his evil minions, heartless, soulless bastards/bitches that they are, simply do not care.

It's not even 2:00 p.m. here and I'm already drinking Merlot. Don't know how else to cope! I'll watch Oprah but I believe what the dr. on her show is saying is doubtless true. Beyond sad, beyond outrage, but true. Sickening!

33. Fears have been realized
"The right fix is to fire the person who led to 3,000 people dying by making
bad calls," Van Auken said. "That is the right fix. We have the wrong fixes
in place."

"We fought for the commission so we could have a full accounting of how
the attacks could have happened and why they weren't prevented,"
Breitweiser said. "This goes to show that all of our efforts and energies
trying to make the nation safer by having the independent commission give
a full accounting to the American people were futile."

"There are no words to describe our disappointment in our personal
sacrifice getting that commission up and running and in the promises that
were made to us that we would have the real 9/11 story told," Van Auken
said. "None of that has come to pass and that is very sad."

35. I am glad this is getting out.
I am normally not an Oprah fan - nothing personal, her style is just not my thing. But she is widely watched, and beloved, and to some degree, by a segment of society that is sheltered from bitter realities like this.

People really need their noses rubbed in something before the outrage begins. Grisly and heartbreaking as such stories are, they must be out there. People MUST be shaken out of their complacency. They need to see pictures of the rotting corpses and have the situation hammered up their asses with a two by four again and again.

I hope that the people who have been moved into the morgue to die are not conscious, but comatose and not aware. Even so, it's just tragic. Shameful and tragic.

83. I'd really like to see it confirmed before it "gets out" further.
Try to imagine if you were a NOLA surviver who's been separated from/lost contact with a loved one and you heard this - on top of everything else. How would you feel?
If it's true, something needs to be done about it. Hospice? Some effort to identify the dying person and locate/notify loved ones? (Where's the "Crossing Jordan" staff? Don't tell me that's fiction.)
If it's not true,it needs to be scotched as soon as possible.
In either case, some confirmation/clarification is in order.

I guess this "solution", whoever made it, solves the "problem" of seriously ill people that they do not have the resources to treat, and gets them were they will eventually wind up and out of the way.

Since this was on Oprah, I'm hoping the MSM picks it up, but I'm not holding my breath. All I can do is email them the story.

58. Well, yes and no...
Triage, in a disaster, is quickly assessing and categorizing the state of patients as they arrive, from those needing immediate attention to the non-urgent to those that will die. Now, the last category can differ according to what resources are available. One unit with enough resources may be able to save a person while another that is stretched to the breaking point and is forced to abandon that same person to death.

It's the image of them moving those people to the morgue that is so horrifying. The idea of living people, even those destined to die, put into a morgue with the dead is almost beyond comprehension, even if those who made that decision had the best of intentions. That may truly be the only place where people can "die in peace" down there. Which makes the whole story more horrible, this is happening in America, not a third-world disaster area.

62. I've never seen a triage that mixes living and dead
with the intent of the living BECOMING the dead.

In other words, you're wrong, it's not triage. It's abandonment leading to death. In other words, callous disregard for human life AND criminal negligence, on the part of those putting them there.

These "doctors" doing this- no matter HOW sad the feel about doing so- deserve prison terms.

75. I hate to break it to you...
Expectant people are moved to an expectant area, in all triages, some of them die before others. So there may be living placed with the dead.

Nothing criminal, and it is hardly neglect. What would be neglect if they used alot of needed time and resources on someone who was most likely going to die anyways... when they could have used the time and resources save 3-4 others, who are now also lost.

No one said that the morgue was already full of dead bodies, now did they? They said that people who were expectant, were taken there to die. I am sorry, and it is saddening, but you rather the Docs and Nurses burn time and resources with those that are about to die, regardless of what is done for them, or those that they may save?
Tragic? Absolutely. The fault of the Docs or Nurses? Hardly. They merely were doing what they could for those that they could.

89. It was the fucking MORGUE
Not the expectant area. I'm sure there ARE more living people among the corpses than is usual for a MORGUE since they are putting those who are still alive but not expected to continue there.

Jesus fucking christ, how this is acceptable to anyone is mind-blowing.

I already said that these people may be stretched to the point of doing this with good intentions, I never blamed any nurses or doctors although I have no idea of knowing if this was the only option or who is making these decisions.

But if you find putting those that are dying in the morgue, which is the obviously convenient place since that is were they will wind up, somehow ok, then you need to check your sense of reality.

99. Morgues are empty alot of the time...
and putting someone in a morgue isnt neccesarily convienent, if they were putting all the folks that were dying in the individual refrigerators, then yeah that is beyond bad. But you have to think critically, if there is limited space for both the living and dead, what do you think that they should have done with them?
Move the dying outside to the heat bugs, and whatever other elements get to them?
Move the dead out there so that the bodies start to decompose, become putrid, start to grow bacteria that can be harmful to everyone? leave the dying right amongst all the other patients that do have a hope to survive, so that others see them and they lose hope?
I didnt say that it was "acceptable" did I? I said it was what needed to be done, and it most certainly is tragic, and my original post on the topic was to the guy that said the docs and nurses should be brought up on charges.

It was only a morgue because that is the area they were placing the bodies. And they had it curtained off.

79. Mixing the dying with the dead was, indeed, horrible.
Nowadays, "triage nurses" decide who needs to see the doctor first. But Triage, as it was originally invented during Napoleon's wars, did mean that those without hope would not be treated. "Advanced Triage" still uses those categories. When resources are stretched to the breaking point, they must be devoted to those who can be helped.

Of course, the dying should have been taken to a separate area & given painkillers. But I would blame those who "allocated" the resources, not the doctors.

I confess, I'm having some real tinfoil hat moments the past couple of days. It's getting harder and harder to explain the massive failure of the Katrina response in terms of simple incompetence.

I'm still trying to apply the usual rule of thumb, which says to discard much of what you read on the internet as untrue or exaggerated. But a story like this sends me racing back to grassy knoll-land.

111. This was in the airport
When the N.O. airport was being used as a triage center/evacuation holding area. They set up part of the airport as a morgue, to seperate those who had died from the rest of the public. They were evacuating individuals, but I believe it was not at a very fast pace. They did not have many doctors or medical facilities on location, so those who were severely injured or sick who they knew did not have long, were put in there to die peacefully and out of the way of the multitudes who were still there. I don't think that is still taking place as it appeared Oprah's doctor's report covered several days. It also was apparent that even though he was a doctor, there was very little he himself could do for anyone without medical supplies.

I saw a local reporter report this days ago. He was at an airport. I am not sure which one, but I think it was after these people were taken from NO. It was an area surrounded by sheets where they were putting the dead and the ones that were dying. These were the people taken out of the hospitals in NO. Many were very ill and had not had good medical attention for days because of no electricity, air conditioning, clean water, etc. It was a pretty grim scene. The doctors were trying to help the ones they thought they could save. The others were put in this make shift morgue with the dead.

on one of the NPR reports about people being brought into the Houston Astrodome, I beleive.

They interviewed a guy on site who said hey were tagging people with various types and colors of tags as they were triaged. If it was a tag with an ambulance and it had a slash thru it, they were deemed beyond the help of the resources at hand.

Can anyone who as been volunteering in Houston verify this?
