We Are Completely Unprotected
What would happen if we were attacked right now? How would the government respond to a nuclear attack on New York?

What this Katrina has proven is that not only are we woefully unprepared to defend ourselves, we're woefully unprepared for the aftermath.

What would have happened in New Orleans if instead of a Hurricane with a few days warning, 10 terrorists had driven explosive laden vans into the floodwalls at multiple points. What if the city had flooded with no evacuation or preparations whatsoever? How many would have died because the city was unprotected, and how many would have died because the government was in no shape to help the people for over five days?

There are many different ways a person with conventional means (ie no nukes, or chemical weapons, etc) could easily kill tens if not hundreds of thousands of americans.

What can we do to start protecting ourselves from both terrorists, as well as Bush?

1. We're watching the death of "our" empire, rotting from within,
not attacked from outside.

3. Absolutely, and that's the way...
I always assumed it would happen. We'd get a rogue leader who would lead us into foolish wars and neglect average people.... Damn I hate being right all the time!

2. Yeah, we're hosed as long as these losers are in power...
I'm stockpiling water as we speak...

There was a great thread yesterday that had disaster planning ideas. Hopefully we'll get out of DU level 3 so we can find stuff so people can use the posts as shopping lists...

4. Wnat scares me...
..is that many places in this country are highly...HIGHLY vulnerable. A single terrorist could kill half a million or more people in the Pittsburgh area with little trouble. It's like that in many major cities.

Now though I'm not just afraid of something like that happening somewhere, but also that afterwards we'd be totally fucked by the government as well.

9. And why don't they?
Because Bush's war on terror is largely hype as well.

13. True
but just ask the people who died in London or Madrid from those bombings. Or the people in New York for that matter.

There aren't many of them, but that's sort of the point. THere doesn't need to be many of them. Just one crazy guy with no other motive than being nuts could kill hundreds of thousands of us because of Bush's incompetence, and now we know that in the aftermath hundreds of thousands more would die for teh same reason.

Homeland Security was NEVER meant
to protect us-
Quite the opposite.
It, along with the UN-Patriotic acts, were ALWAYS
meant to protect THEM, from US, when we
finally figured out what the rules of engagement from
these multi-national corporate thugs were.
The complete and TOTAL decimation of
the American people has ALWAYS been their
intention.
Figure out how you are going to survive-
There will be NO help or rescue coming your way.

8. Last Words
These are the kind of people who would rather the human race be destroyed than let gays marry, or a troubled 16 year old get an abortion.

The fire could be raining down on them and they'd say "At least queers can't get married!" as their last words.

They're sick twisted and evil people with no humanity at all.

11. Arm yourself...
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 04:33 PM by jmc777
I know it probably won't be a popular piece of advice around these parts, but the first thing I'd do is go out and buy some guns so that you can protect yourself and your family if/when the bush hits the fan. And stock food/water etc, maybe buy a good quality water purifier.

12. I used to think that way
To have a shotgun stashed in case society fell apart...but after what happened in Nola recently, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone walking around with a shotgun for protection after a disaster were themselves shot on sight.
