Is Obama saying that he doesn't believe that this was about race
so the country doesn't explode in mass riots? Other than that...I don't get it. Not at all.

peace.

3. Listen to him until the end
He says it is about class and the fact that nobody cares about the very poor, that nothing was planned to evacuate them.

4. RW white middle class ex-bush loving in-laws believe it is
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 04:21 PM by cynatnite
They said if these people hadn't been black and poor, this wouldn't have happened.

If they believe it, you can bet most of the country believes it.

I knew racism was alive and well in this country, but I'm a believer now. All that's missing from bush and minions is the white sheets. They hide it with denial and pretense.

Having Condi up there saying it wasn't race sure isn't changing any minds.

edited cause I mess up.

26. It is sad, but it is also absolutely necessary.
If you believe that simply voting in another politician is going to make any difference. I'm just trying to point out the differences are cosmetic only. Our "representatives" don't represent us and haven't for a long time.

In this country it takes money to have political clout. Bush has made it clear that his interests are in corporations and large republican donors.

13. You cannot talk about class without talking about race
24% of African Americans are in poverty, nearly HALF of African American children live in poverty while only 8% of whites live in poverty.

Poverty and race are inextricably linked.

14. well
in the big picture I think he's right, it's more about class
and the royal screw job on anyone who needs assistance in the US,
the poor, disabled, elderly.

But, in the incidence level...I think race is huge, the fact that they stopped rescue because of the "looters" and "violence" and some of the many stories imply there is racism looking at blacks as a bunch of violent criminals...

But big picture is more $$$$$ and lack thereof.

is NOT what I was hoping for. WE NEED PEOPLE TO STAND UP AND SCREAM ABOUT THIS REGIME! Who is ever going to do that? I'm sick and tired of this "diplomatic" behavior. SCREAM! Please! SOMEONE! ANYONE!

17. I think it was predominantly about class, too. However...
For one solid week the only pics we saw were pics of African Americans. If it was about class...where were the caucasians? Where were they? The first pics I saw of caucasians being rescued was last evening on KO!

Worthless. Undesirable. Disposable. That's what I saw. That was the message. Ask Babs. She'll tell you!

Peace.

25. Was the "it's too dangerous in there, we are suspending evac..."
Also colorblind?

C'mon, the "crazy looting niggers on a wild rampage" excuse would have been hard to pull off with white folks. Especially with live pictures of white children and their mothers dying in the heat while waiting for help that never came.

This isn't to say there wasn't some violence and that white people, especially the poor, weren't hurt just as badly.

But there are elements to this narrative that make no sense when divorced from race in this country.

27. A journalist friend of mine interviewed him during his campaign
Said he was very rude and did not want to talk to him. And this is a black journalist!

Also the people on his campaign staff at least at that event were pretty much lily white.
