WOW! Read this if you still don't believe Bush ignored Katrina!!
This is a portion of NBC's Brian Williams' blog -- it was posted on a TV news industry web site called News Blues:

"I will never forget one particular moment: I was on the phone with my wife while at the checkout area when a weather bulletin arrived on my Blackberry, along with a strong caveat from our New York producers."
-------------------
Below are actual excerpts, in the urgent, all-capital-letters style of the medium. Note the time on the message... but more importantly... note the content.***

URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE

21. If I see the primary source, I will believe
But until someone finds a link to that report ON the noaa web site, I will not believe it.

it's so totally unlike anything the noaa puts out, esp. in terms of specifics (A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED STRENGTH...MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...AT LEAST HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED...ALL WINDOWS WILL BE BLOWN OUT...ONLY THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED...POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.)

It all reeks of excessive hyperbole, the kind of excessive and ridiculous hyperbole that makes for great email scams.

The national weather service would never put out a bulletin with such oddly specific, and unscientific, bloviations.

Until I see a link to the national weather service website, I conclude that this is pure, unadulterated, made up bullshit.

40. Okay, I searched the national weather service site
Here's the page that lists all the bulletins they sent out for Katrina:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2005/KATRINA.shtml?

You need to scroll down a bit to get to August 28.

The "bulletin" the OP posted is not be found in there. And, in the entirety of the bulletins given for August 28, there are NONE - absolutely NONE - that have the hyper-emotionalistic, non-scientific hyperbole of the alleged bulletin that the OP posted.

Your link is not a primary source link - it's a google link. However, given the trustworthiness of google, and the fact that the page they grabbed seems legit, I don't know what to make of it.

Perhaps some random yahoo guy at the national weather service decided to send out his own, unofficial bulletin, and google grabbed a copy of it before the national weather service realized what the yahoo had done. I don't know.

But the truth is, the style of the "bulletin" the OP posted is so totaly unlike ANY bulletin I've ever seen from the national weather service, that I still am suspect about its origins. Especially since it isn't in the archive on the offical website, and also since the archive has bulletins that speak of equivalent destruction and with equivalent immediacy, but without the emotionalistic hyperbole.

So,like Scopes, I have to say that there is no way to prove that the OP's "bulletin" is bullshit, as suspected, but there's no way to prove it's legit, either, so the jury is out. And I decide to sway to the side of bullshit. Especially considering that the legitimate bulletins that are on the official website are equally damning, equally cognizent of the destructive power, equally warning of the destruction (but without the hyper-emotionalistic hyperbole), why not go with the official ones, and not look like a cuckoo?

I live on the Gulf Coast in Florida
And very similar worded warnings are posted from the Weather Service on the Weather Channels website.

The descriptions try to put out an accurate description of what to expect. It's real.

Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 11:55 PM by RamboLiberal
on Sunday the 28th about the seriousness of this hurricane. This guy was frantic. He wanted to do all he could to convince Bush, and the authorities in the states and cities affected that this was a big one. He wanted to be able to sleep at night knowing he did all he could. Too bad our Dear Leader and most of his cabal was still on vacation!

59. NBC confirmed it was real, per Brian Williams' blog. This warning was
issued at 10:11am CST Sunday, and posted several times that day at DU. I saw the warning on Sunday and freaked out the rest of the day. Also on Sunday there was mention that a flooding of New Orleans could cause 40,000-60,000 dead.

Was bush told of these warnings beforehand? If so, why didn't he have a WTF! moment and spring into action? If bush was not told, why did the people working under him decide either bush did not need to know, or bush did not care to know? And what about Mr. National Security himself, Dick Fucking Cheney? What were his other priorities before and after the hurricane hit?

What did bush know, and when did he know it? And if he didn't know, did he know he didn't know it?

_____

Here's the quote from Brian Williams blog yesterday, who, by the way, has been pretty great before, during and after the hurricane hit:

There are a few details from a week ago that are strikingly telling in the light of day a week later. Our team arrived in Baton Rouge Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28. After renting cars, we headed to top off our gas tanks before one last stop at a Wal-Mart for provisions. The air was already frantic, the snack aisles empty and the last of the bottled water were selling out as we watched. I will never forget one particular moment: I was on the phone with my wife while at the checkout area when a weather bulletin arrived on my Blackberry, along with a strong caveat from our New York producers. The wording and contents were so incendiary that our folks were concerned that it wasn't real... either a bogus dispatch or a rogue piece of text. I filed a live report by phone for Nightly News (after an exchange with New York about the contents of the bulletin) and very cautiously couched the information. Later, we learned it was real, every word of it. Below are actual excerpts, in the urgent, all-capital-letters style of the medium. Note the time on the message... but more importantly... note the content.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9216831/#050905

Note: William's does not quote the entire warning. It is referenced elsewhere in this thread.

66. What's the big problem with believing this is a real report?
The first time I was about to get hit by a hurricane I was surprised to find that this 'hyperbolic, 'non-scientific' style was on display, but it sure was. Not at all unusual, at least in such extreme weather events (the only time I used to log on to check for bulletins was when I was about to get hit by a hurricane). If memory serves, they have different styles of weather bulletin that are issued simultaneously, or nearly so, at least during hurricane events.

67. Sounds to me like the emotional language may have been because
somebody at NWS--seeing all the political bullshit going on, the downgrading of the hurricane that lulled many of us (me included) into thinking it wasn't going to be so bad, and "hair on fire" getting blank stares from Bush and Bushites who were already dividing up Louisiana real estate among themselves (as they did with maps of Iraq oil fields at Cheney's secret energy meetings in spring '01), and who had already given standdown orders to FEMA--WANTED TO **GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS**!!! REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WANTED TO GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS that the shit was about to hit the fan.

Nothing like murderous Bushite thieves in pre-profiteering mode to make you lose your scientific style.

70. Santorum wants to turn NOAA over to Accuweather...
No free daily weather reports.

Only Accuweather subscribers would be allowed detailed info.

Only grave warnings would be issued.

Boaters, pilots, campers, outdoor sports would all suffer under Santorums bill recently introduced that would effectivly privatize the National Weather Service....to a company that he gets large contributions from....accuweather.

He says the government shouldn't be in the weather business and compteting in against private companies....

73. Blows my mind
Anytime there's an "event" these vultures find a way to push their greedy corporatist agenda. Privatize. They probably intend to argue that the NWS failed us.

I'll make a bet part od the NOLA SNAFU was that they hadn't gotten their contracts in place and didn't want to deploy gov. resources until they could make some deals.

Gawd have I gotten cynical! (Didn't think THAT was even possible.)

74. Okey dokey everyone, Rabrrrrrr has some egg on face
I sent an email with the links to the two bulletins cahced at google to Frank Lepore at the NOAA, and here is what he said. Note that he passed my email on to a Chris Lauer, and you can see Chris' response here as well.

So, son of a gun, the things are legit, and Rabrrrrrr stands corrected!

The advisories you cite are valid, issued by the National Weather Service Forecast Office, Slidell (La.) Because they are issued locally, they would not appear in the National Hurricane Center archive of products.

Given the apocalyptic language in Slidell's advisory, and the almost prophetic outcome, it's not surprising that they would gain attention.

Respectfully submitted,

Frank Lepore

and a thank you. Well done.

I'd seen the report myself at the time, so didn't question the validity, but the alarm voiced in it was so atypical of the usually cut and dried reports, your doubt is completely understandable.

Following through and verifying it for everyone's future reference was a great service to us all.
