Bush Was Briefed on Force of Katrina at Crawford on Sunday, the 28th

I had heard it suggested by a knowledgable source that a White House representative was listening in when National Hurricane Center Chief Max Mayfield gave that briefing to Brown and Chertoff before Katrina hit.

But according to this August 30th article in the St. Petersburg Times, on Sunday the 28th, Maxfield arranged a video conference call with President Bush himself at the Crawford Ranch during which he explained the hurricane's force and destructive potential.

Perhaps this is common knowledge. But I hadn't heard it before. And it would seem to leave little question that the president himself knew the critical information from Mayfield before Katrina even made landfall.

Said Mayfield, according to the Times: "I just wanted to be able to go to sleep that night knowing that I did all I could do."

There's no excuse. There wasn't before, but this is evidence they can't pull back in. It's another avenue of deniability cut off.

Yes, I am a weather fanatic and proud of it. I told a young man on Friday before Katrina hit, who was planning to visit New Orleans on Thursday, Sept. 1st,, that he had better check the weather- there may not be much of NO left.

I do not know why I felt so strongly about this storm- but I did. Sunday afternoon I became so upset I donated money to the Red Cross, knowing that people were going to need alot of help.

Looking back at this, I only wish I had been wrong. The kicker is it is worse than I could have ever imagined or "felt in my bones".

I believe what has happened here has changed everything. This is big!!!!!! How our government has handled the victims of Katrina is ... I don't have words yet that express how I feel about how these folks were treated, but this is something that will make us have to all pull together. This is where that sacrifice we are not sure of will come into play in a huge way.

So let's stick together.

He was sitting in an empty conference room with Mayfield looking at a tv screen with Katrina grphic up. Someone noticed that the phones had no cords. Someone on DU must have saved that pic.
