'Hair on Fire' Hurricane Forecaster Briefed Bush Sun Aug 28th

MIAMI - About an hour after Hurricane Katrina made landfall, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center were running on adrenaline and sugar. Few had slept much in recent days, if at all.

Director Max Mayfield's eyes were puffy, his voice slightly cracked from giving interviews to media outlets around the world.

"I don't even know what day it is," said Mayfield.

<snip>

On Saturday night, Mayfield was so worried about Hurricane Katrina that he called the governors of Louisiana and Mississippi and the mayor of New Orleans. On Sunday, he even talked about the force of Katrina during a video conference call to President Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

"I just wanted to be able to go to sleep that night knowing that I did all I could do," Mayfield said.

Was his hair on fire? And that MF'er of a chickenhawk went on with his f'in photo-ops for two friggin' days!

partying in Arizona and California. And while he ignored the plea from the Governor of Louisiana.
To me that confirms LIHOP!

5. I got the link from Joshua Micah Marshall TPM
I had heard it suggested by a knowledgable source that a White House representative was listening in when National Hurricane Center Chief Max Mayfield gave that briefing to Brown and Chertoff before Katrina hit.

But according to this August 30th article in the St. Petersburg Times, on Sunday the 28th, Maxfield arranged a video conference call with President Bush himself at the Crawford Ranch during which he explained the hurricane's force and destructive potential.

Perhaps this is common knowledge. But I hadn't heard it before. And it would seem to leave little question that the president himself knew the critical information from Mayfield before Katrina even made landfall.

Said Mayfield, according to the Times: "I just wanted to be able to go to sleep that night knowing that I did all I could do."

9. Wasn't there a photo-op of that call?
I seem to remember a thread here (damn the long level three kept it from my posts) where we were talking about the fact that it looked like the phone wasn't even connected? (the phone was connected through holes in the table, but it looked like they weren't connected at all) I remember seeing the two flat screens at the end of the table with one with a weather report with the projected path?

Can anyone find that post?

It's striking how empty the room is. Where are all the Bushites? Nobody interested in Louisiana being blown off the map? (Or are the real estate parcel maps in another room?)

18. As far as the under-funded and overwhelmed local governments are concerned
...this quote from Churchill sums up the President's and FEMA's responsibilities:

Churchill, deeply troubled by England's lack of preparation for World War II, said, "The responsibility of ministers for the public safety is absolute and requires no mandate. It is in fact the prime object for which governments come into existence."
