Santorum says it is OK for Govt. to force NOLA people from their homes.
On KDKA Radio Pittsburgh, within the past hour... of course he cites "health concerns" etc.

Don't forget he told Hurricane Ivan flood victims in Pittsburgh last year (who lost everything and had no insurance or who had maxed out what insurance they had) to "stand on their own two feet".

:grr:

1. Last night on the local news in Pittsburgh
They had an interview with him where he changed his tune to...there were people who just couldn't leave and that the local officials should have provided transportation.

I blasted him an email this morning pointing out that he was wrong about the local officials not providing *transportation and that the republicans need to quit pointing fingers especially when they don't have the facts and that the buck stops at Bush's desk.

*Mayor Nagin issues mandatory evacuation for New Orleans
As of 9:30 a.m., Mayor Nagin has issued a mandatory evacuation for New Orleans.

The Superdome has been opened for people with special needs and as a shelter of last resort. Residents should call (504) 568-3200 to reserve space in this shelter.

The city has set up ten pickup areas to take people to emergency shelters. RTA buses will be picking up citizens for free and take them to these shelters. The number to call for pickup areas is 1-800-469-4828.

4. Only over the next month when the danger to rescue workers when
people get sick is bad. No more deaths. I can understand someone wanting to stay in their home with their pets and wait it out. But if they get really sick - they may call for help (changing their acceptance of dying there) and put rescue workers at risk for serious illness.

The Mayor of NO & Witt are for the evacuation too.

In time. When the dangers have been cleaned up. If houses are safe & standing in some areas - they get to go home.

5. So, does this mean that you're for forcible removal?
If a person is in their own house, has abundant supplies, has all the things they need to do well - should they be dragged, kicking and screaming, from their house to be interred in some camp somewhere? If they have pets, what is to be done about them?

And if the person resists, what level of force do you advocate for removal?

6. The Mayor of New Orleans has order this
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 06:57 AM by MildyRules
it's primarily for health reasons. You bet your ass the Govt can condemn your property and/or declare it unfit for public safety/health reasons and force you out. Some people are just too stupid.

10. People will die. Rescue workers will be put at risk saving people
(when they get back to their senses).

They take little old ladies out of their homes when they have too many cats. For health reasons. Think of all the dangers these people will have in a week - huge amounts of water lying in puddles filled with E coli and all manner of rot. Dead dogs & humans & cats. And all the "live bacteria" on those animals when they died just grows and grows & grows. Epidemics will start. But only if there are live people walking around in regular clothes rather than white suits and masks. The animals - very sadly, will starve by three weeks. Many have starved already.

It is a horrid, horrid thing.

But how - when the disease really starts and the bacteria & virus counts hit very high numbers can you rescue someone who needs help finally and asks for it - and then bring them to a hospital. You cannot just let dangers "cycle". Bush did last week when he let the army step down. There is no excuse for that.

Mayor of New Orleans orders forced evacuations
CTV.ca News Staff

The mayor of New Orleans has ordered the forced evacuation of the flood-ravaged city, amid safety fears for residents refusing to leave.

Mayor Ray Nagin said all citizens, except those not involved in the relief effort, should leave the city. The mandatory evacuation order kicks in this morning.

"There are toxins in the water, there are gas leaks where we may have explosions. We are fighting at least four fires right now and we don't have running water. It is not safe," Nagin said.

An unknown number of bodies and raw sewage floating in the floodwaters have also raised safety concerns.
