Links to Halliburton clean up story.
Am I right in believing that Halliburton got the contract to clean up LA before the rescue work was even started by FEMA? I saw a thread about it, but with the rapidly moving board, I cannot find it again. I need it to refute my Republican friend.

2. In 2004, Halliburton got another five year bite at the apple of our
treasury. They were given a no bid, no compete five year contract to do whatever needed doing on behalf of our federal government. This was based on their history of accomplishing jobs in the past, and was not the first long term contract they had received.

Basically, the way things stand, they are a privitized division of the federal government, without the checks and balances. All we can do to them if they screw up is refuse to pay them--there are no other real consequences to be had...

And people who own stock in that company get richer by the minute.

Halliburton hired for storm cleanup
The Navy has hired Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Halliburton subsidiary KBR will also perform damage assessments at other naval installations in New Orleans as soon as it is safe to do so.

KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process. The company is not involved in the Army Corps of Engineers' effort to repair New Orleans' levees.

6. Thank you everyone!
That was very quick, and I thank all of you for your help. When they start worrying more about giving out contracts than rescuing people, there's something seriously wrong. I wonder that they don't have expertise in the NGs or in FEMA to restore power etc while they also rescue people.
