Whats the reason for the demolition of the Superdome?
I recieved a CNN notice that the decision had been made to tear down the Superdome but I haven't heard anymore on this topic.
Does anybody know the reason behind this decision being made or does anybody have anymore information on this story?

1. The BFEE didn't get Abu Gharib torn down, so they want to
destroy THIS symbol of their incompetence.

2. stated reason (video interview) was the roof damage
but, no doubt the level of decimation from human wastes, the dead, the garbage, and all the horror that occurred there is also influencing the decision.

8. "Biohazard" was mentioned on CNN last night
It was not the main reason, but it was mentioned.

16. But there was no structural damage.
They simply want the symbol of their failure to be destroyed.

3. I dont think it's a done deal just yet : "Stadium future up in the air"
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/nation/12579558.htm

The Louisiana Superdome, which housed thousands of people who were stranded by Hurricane Katrina, is likely to be torn down, Cable News Network reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed Louisiana state official.

Doug Thornton, regional manager for the company that runs the Superdome, insisted Tuesday there were no plans to tear down the building.

Thornton said it would take 45 to 60 days for teams to assess the damage to the stadium. He said that while there was "no doubt" that the Superdome suffered damage, its structural integrity remained intact, and there was no truth to rumors that officials have decided to tear it down.

"To say that the Dome has to be torn down at this point is purely conjecture and speculation," Thornton said.

4. Most likely...
Would be more expensive to repair it than to start over from scratch. Probably safer to start from scratch anyway. And perhaps it gives them a chance of keeping the Saints in town.

5. WDSU has been reporting...
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 06:48 AM by Dunvegan
...that a mole in the office of the NOLA Saints says the owner is taking his team for the full season to play in San Antonio.

No season tickets will be refunded.

He's been aching to shop that team, and this gives him the perfect opportunity to pull out, according to WDSU's mole.

If the city defaults on certain promises, and that is now a high probability, he is free to float the team on the open market.

He's supposedly wanted outta NOLA for some time now.

Here's his chance.

The mole is supposedly high up in the organization and says he's quitting shortly because of this morale-shattering profiteering. As soon as the mole quits, we'll probably have his name.

So...why do they need a Superdome any longer, then?

Ugly...isn't it?

11. rumors
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 07:50 AM by sabbat hunter
here is what is actually going on
snip "Saints owner Tom Benson, who drew criticism for his silence concerning where the team should play home games in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, prefers to call Baton Rouge home. In a statement issued Tuesday, Benson echoed players and coaches who've said they prefer to play in Tiger Stadium on the LSU campus. Benson said he told the NFL he would like the Saints to play there "to the extent circumstances allow.""

snip " Benson also assured season-ticket holders they will be refunded if they are unable to attend games, wherever they may be played. He said the team was still finishing the details of its refund policy"

season tickets will be refunded if they cannot get to baton rouge

not leaving state of louisiana to play games, if the stadium is available.

rumors, moles. dont believe them

15. Yes...back-room talk without attribution is unreliable...
And there are no hard-and-fast plans from Benson yet...they may stay in one place, or (less probably) spend the entire season on the road...which is hard on the player's families, and would probably reflect in their ability to play well.

I'm just reporting the rumor...the sportscaster at WDSU mentioned this several times, vouched for his source...whom he says he personally knows, has interviewed many times over the years, and believes.

But without the mole or Benson coming out in public with the NOLA Saints business plan, it's still all foggy bottom talk.

Just throwing it out here because the reporter at WDSU seemed extremely certain when questioned by anchors about his source's reliability.

26. benson
Saints owner benson has come out. (see link above)

i always hate 'unnamed sources' in sports cause that could be anyone from the owner himself/herself to some janitor who overheard a conversation.

6. I believe the official story is because of the storm damage...
...although I'm inclined to think the real reason is it will always be associated with misery (of the occupants after the storm).

7. That is probably just another rumor
I seriously doubt that James Witt would choose this time to publicly comment about the structural viability of the Superdome. Neither he nor the Gov has issued any statement about it or commented on it publicly.

9. I haven't heard of this............
yet, but I am not surprised of this decision. One has to wonder if there isn't a lot there the decision makers don't want the public to view. Yesterday I read here on a DU thread that reporters weren't allowed into the Superdome or the Convention Center....why? Listening to Washington Journal and Imus and Faux news this morning I am amazed at the opinions out there and the no blame umbrella that * seems to be under.

10. Luxury suites and loges
No matter what the damage, whether it was a few roof tiles or near-total destruction, "it would cost more to fix it up than to build a new one" . . .

12. heard a freeper at the grocery- I kid you not
"Well, demm blacks dirtied it up so bad, who would want to go back in now?"

from the context and tone, I assume they meant that because so many poor and black people were stuck there with no showers, no water, no food, no AC in 100 stifling heat, that those "cooties" must be falling off and might soon infect Barbara Bush's more prefered population, if those rich white people dare go back inside.

Needless to say, I managed not to get arrested as i responded with a biting comment.

13. The Superdome was an aging and nasty building
before Bush turned it into a hell hole. Plus the Saints have been threatening to leave NO if they didn't get a new stadium for a long time.

They are now saying the building sustained a lot more damage from the storm then they had thought. This is why the Red Cross wouldn't certify the Superdome has a safe shelter for a Cat 3 or 4 hurricane.

I say tear the damn thing down and use the land for a memorial park for the victims.

23. Because "Everyone ELSE" in the NFL is getting a new playhouse...
I'd venture a guess that this is not the FIRST time the Saints owners have "suggested" the taxpayers build them a new house for their millionaire entertainers to work in...
Kartina just makes it seem reasonable now.

24. Rich ball club owners want the taxpayers to build them a
new stadium. If it wasn't the hurricane they usually are threatening to move to another city anyway if the taxpayers don't foot the bill for a new stadium.
