Ivins' perspective needed more than ever

Recently you published a letter from a reader complaining about your continuing to publish Molly Ivins' liberal rants against President Bush. Contrary to that reader, I feel that we need Ms. Ivins' perspective now more than ever.

As a Texan, she has witnessed and written about the corruption of Bush and his cronies, a greedy gang who never fail to serve themselves first rather than the common good.

What else would explain the fact that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is currently directed by the failed manager of the International Arabian Horse Show Association? Mike Brown was hired with one sole qualification: that he was the college roommate of Bush's former campaign manager. This is not just an amusing outrage; it is reckless, thoughtless leadership by a president whose motto is me first and whose decisions have had real, massive and disastrous consequences.

Bush and his ilk of crony capitalists have commandeered our nation, and it is time that we reject them utterly--first, at the ballot box, and then by working toward forming a real democracy that will serve the interests of people and communities.

10. Have some hints for you

First thing, call your phone company and have them activate a trace system on your phone.

Once that's activated, as soon as you get the harassing phone call, dial *57. THIS BYPASSES THE CALLER ID BLOCK. It also keeps a record of the calls that ring two or more times and stop, if you do *57 right after the ring stops.

You don't get the phone number, but the phone company does. They will turn it over to the police if a complaint is filed.

This is the advice a Bush-loving cop told me (when I put these steps into action). Especially after you've tagged a call with *57 and the caller seems to be the same person, the next time he/she calls, tell them that they have to stop or you'll file a complaint. Any calls from that person after that will be considered punishable.

Once this happens a few times, involve the police.
