Welcome to my office. Again. Repugs sound off on Katrina.
I posted one of these last week, but I feel it's my duty to let you guys take a real look at what passes for progressive thought on the "Right." Here are some actual quotes from Repug co-workers (if not verbatim, very close) in my office, all made yesterday and today.

* "You know how that mayor down there says he predicts a bunch of dead bodies when the water gets pumped out? Let's hope they're all illegals and welfare motherfuckers."

* "In the end, the higher the death toll down there, the more money we'll save on these forced fucking handouts, so at least there's a silver lining here. As long as the hurricane has hit, let's hope it's 20,000 parasites dead instead of just a few hundred."

* "So it was Bush's responsibility to save blacks? What about the black looters, shouldn't they have been helping their own? Oh, wait, that's right, they've been screwed by society so looting is their duty. My mistake."

* "You just know Sharpton and his ilk are whooping it up over this shit. The more blacks that die, they better for those race-baiting pricks."

* "I drafted Brooks and McCallister, and now they're not even going to play at home? If I had known this bullshit was going to happen I'd have drafted Tiki Barber and some other QB when my turn came around. First we have to hear about this shit 24/7 and now it fucks up my fantasy football season. Assholes."

* "Donate, my ass. I already donate to every one of those food stamp fucks in one way or another. The only thing I'll donate is (the rest of this quote probably invites endless violations of the sex thread policy, send me a message if you want the actual quote)."

* "Look at the screen, guys, it's another faggot liberal journalist here to tell us what to think! How much should I care today, you limpwristed fuck?"

* "Too bad Kerry isn't down in the French Quarter, he could be sensitive to those poor assholes in their native language." (You can't make this stuff up, folks)

* "The biggest reason to rebuild the city is that if they spread out we'll be forced to give them handouts out of our budgets. We've already got a few hundred of those fuckers on cots in the Armory, guess whose pockets that comes out of?"

* "When I was a kid I had this telescope that was considered state-of-the-art at the time, and if I had it now I still wouldn't be able to find a single reason to feel sorry for a few hundred thousand dildoes that choose to live below sea level next to a shaky levee."

* (In response to charges that Bush is indifferent to poor blacks) "Wah, wah, wah. Like if a tornado hit Texas and wiped out half the state, president Kerry would really bust his ass to help a bunch of Texans."

* "Gee, my heart really goes out to those poor saps who are too hungry to loot. Let's rush more of our tax dollars down there right away."

* "If I hear one more story focusing on some woman and her newborn, I'm gonna scream. What percentage of these women can afford kids without the government confiscating from us and throwing cash at them anyway? Maybe one in fifty."

* "Get this - first we hear fucking whining about limited resources, and now they're organizing some patrol to save pets. What a bunch of assholes. If this storm isn't natural selection, what the fuck is?"

* "I'll bet Katrina will inspire some kickass new blues tunes down there. (starts to sing in mock blues style) 'I got a waterlogged house an' my welfare's late, no Colt .45 in the fridge so I got no date..."

It's the second workday of the week and it isn't even lunchtime yet, folks.

11. Answers
1.) I can't, but until I can find a job with equal or better pay and benefits, I have to put up with it. My wife recently left her job to spend time with her father, who has very little time left.

2.) I'm in DC, although I live across the river in Arlington.

3.) About 70%.

I keep telling people this.

My obnoxious brother in law was going on about how all these black citizens were wastes anyway, and likely criminals.

I walked away from the picnic table and grabbed a stick. Kept it next to me the whole meal.

People asked me what I was doing, and I said: "The next racist comment like that I hear get's the person who said it a whack to the neck."

Dinner passed peaceably.

don't forget:

"get the military recruiters over to the astrodome before they fuck up that building too!" (taken care of I see---probably because this prick called every Congress-animal on his lunch hour to demand it. My joy? He used state resources for political uses. Yeah, I turned his ass in for it too)

retort to that by another genius:
"yeah, there's some work for them---why aren't those able-bodied m-f'ers in the service now?"

"if environmentalists hadn't hobbled the oil industry no one would live there anyway" (no, i don't get that one at all either)

"what part of mandatory evacuation didn't these people understand?"

"they were afraid to leave before 'Welfare Day' on the 1st of the month"

"I heard from a guy in real estate that you should pick up property there now---they are really going to make the place nice!"

I sometimes wonder if I'm in my own private hell and the rest of you have people you can talk to. I'm trying to shut up and keep my job because I need to for the same reasons you describe.

I have a hard time though understanding the selfishness that allows these rationalizations---btw, I've heard all of your examples in similar language. Usually preceded by "I'm a Christian but..."

if they consider themselves to be Christians (probably every one will say yes), then quote the following - Matthew 25:45-46: Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done unto me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.

21. Post this somewhere prominent...
and anonymously if you can...

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

"Serial killers also have something In common, they are mostly white Christian males."

43. LOL OOOH! But we get 'time served' in purgatory under Bush too, so see...
...that means you get DOUBLE COUPON bonus points! :)

Seriously, I feel for you. That's an awful position to be in...

I worked at my dad's company during college. It was a mine safety equipment company. It was split into warehouse/assembly and offices/engineering. As a woman, it was so much safer in the warehouse/assembly area. I remember walking through the machine shop (all men) and the guys, well, they were actually stunned to see a young woman in jeans in their area. But they never harassed me, and always wanted to chat. They were cool...

The opposite was true in the offices... By my second day, I knew I would never wear skirts here because I'd seen two secretaries groped as they tried to put files away in a filing cabinet. All of the women kneeled when getting into their desks, or opening cabinets. It was the most blatant sexual harassment/assault, and I was appalled.

I talked to my dad, and the warehousemen/women knew about it. They were members of a union, but the general atmosphere was 'we've offered them help, they're afraid of being fired'. And it was true - several women did complain, and were promptly fired. I'm pretty sure one of them sued, and won a suit, but my father retired shortly after that so I'm not sure if any 'change' really happened there...

Whatever you do, or don't do for that matter, know this: you aren't alone. There are better places out there. I've worked in some horrible places, and found some wonderful places, with wonderful people. You can find better than what you are trapped with now. Don't give up hope! :)

Also, sorry for the ramble - haven't had my coffee yet! peace!

more genteel in their language. But, the intent is the same. These people deserved what happened to them, the Bush administration is in no way negligent (and don't pick on "my little boy" -- says George, Sr.), and "those people" are, to use Barbara's words, "scary".
But, we compassionate liberals are not taking their hate talk this time around. We're giving them back talk.
And, like the fixed fight that is rightwing radio, they can't handle the truth.
They scuttle off like cockroaches.

It's a question of caring about others - these guys don't. I once saw one refuse to lend the other his car jack because he was in a hurry for a tee time or something like that. The other guy had to leave his car in the garage at a cost and take a cab home.
