1. Nope
The only thing they planted today was just another racist, who wore a black robe instead of a white hood.

73. college just ain't what it used to be
Of course, the one I went to was a university, what we call 'em up here. I was just talking to a friend of mine who's been teaching at one for a couple of decades. He's clinically depressed. Ha ha, not really. He's just nauseated. These days, he just assumes most of his students are ignorant, and arrogant to boot.

In my day, it was possible to assume that people had a basic store of knowledge before they got to academia -- and that they recognized that there were things that were common knowledge, even if they didn't know them.

They also recognized that other people knew things they didn't, and understood that maybe it wasn't the job of the world at large to spend its time teaching them things it wasn't paid to teach them.

These days, it really is quite easy to remedy any gaps there may be in the knowledge one needs to discuss things intelligently. And believe me: repeatedly telling someone else to prove something to you isn't discussing anything intelligently.

What you do is something like this:

Go to google.com. Put the words rehnquist racist in the search box. And abracadabra, you get 263,000 things to read. Because your search was so non-specific, you even get things that say he *wasn't* a racist, in case that was the thesis you were wanting to defend.

At bottom, here's the thing: just because you exist, nobody is obligated to talk to you. If you want to participate in a discussion in which people who know things you don't know are involved, and it's taking place in public, you're quite welcome to do that. If you want to know what the basis is for something that someone else is saying, you're quite welcome to ask.

You did: Was he really a racist?

You got an answer, and an indication of where to find supporting evidence. Then you seemed to think that someone should prove the truth of that answer. Since nobody was actually demanding that you accept the answer, or claiming to have established the answer as true, nobody had to prove a damned thing to you. That's the thing. You were at all times perfectly free to believe whatever you wanted. If you had wanted to assert the contrary, then you could have done that too. And a fine round of "is", "is not" could have ensued. Unless either person was actually claiming to have demonstrated a position, or looking for a good mark on his/her essay, neither person would have had any reason to produce supporting evidence.

People really may "make assertions without proof" anytime they like, and without any valid reason for chiding by you. People, in fact, do it every minute of the day. You must be busy.
"It's raining."
"Wow! Is it really raining?"
"Yes it is; look out the window."
"Why don't you just describe the meteorological events in detail, I don't have time to look out the window."
... ... ...

I'm too late to this particular party to have any real fun, but I'm feeling irritable ...

Did you read the whole article? It's only about a quarter of the way down. http://archive.salon.com/news/1998/07/03news.html

"In the chambers of Justice Robert Jackson, one of the justice's clerks broods over the Court's march toward abolition of Southern states' race laws. The Jim Crow doctrine of separate-but-equal, the clerk wrote Jackson, was "right and should be affirmed" as the Supreme Court had done back in 1893. Liberal justices, mostly New Dealers like Hugo Black and William O. Douglas appointed by presidents Roosevelt and Truman, were engaged in "a pathological search for discrimination." The clerk advised Justice Jackson in a memo that, "It is about time the Court faced the fact that white people in the South don't like the colored people."

Desegregation is not the only issue raising this particular clerk's ire. A few months earlier, he had bristled at delays in executing Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted of atom-bomb espionage. He couldn't understand, he sneered in a memo to Justice Jackson, "why the highest court in the land must behave like a bunch of old women" whenever it confronted capital punishment.

Justice Jackson's clerk -- at 27 years old, no unformed adolescent -- was William Rehnquist, today Chief Justice of the United States. As federal prosecutor Edward Lazarus notes in his recent book "Closed Chambers" (far more scholarly and reflective than its marketing as a former clerk's tell-all memoir would suggest), the disdain Rehnquist reflected in those memos to Justice Jackson would prove prophetic. By the mid-1960s, the specific issues that so angered clerk Rehnquist -- the civil rights movement and capital punishment -- would become flashpoints for a new generation of far-right lawyers. Bearing in one hand the club of state's rights, in the other the truncheon of law-and-order, these conservatives were determined to beat back the era's revolution in civil rights and civil liberties."
