MSNBC: 15th named storm: Tropical Storm Ophelia, east of Florida... |
|
...we've never reached 15 named storms this quickly. Never.

I was just pointing out Bush's difficulties with women. Cindi Sheehan, Gov. Blanco, Sen. Landrieu, Rep. Pelosi, Hillary Clinton are causing him some deserved grief. His own mother is causing problems with her stupid remarks.

4. If they are white and rich |
|
they will probably experience one "typhoon" day out of school but will return the next, if Bush has to bust his lazy silver-spooned ass to get them there.

5. Not Much Chance Of That |
|
Looks like Ophelia wants to just hang out off our coast for a while. Soemthing about there aren't any good steering currents.
I wouldn't worry too much, the weather is going to be yucky, but they are not yet forecasting any doomsday scenarios. We could get a lot of rain, but Florida is not NOLA. Usually, if people are smart, they don't get hurt.
Tell them to stock up on supplies (don't forget the junk food and beer), rent a few movies (if they have VCR or DVD player) and not go out unless absolutely necessary. Some roads could flood and driving conditions will be nasty.

15. Maybe. The 1920's and 30's were pretty hellish for tropical systems |

6. They only have six names left! |
|
Philippe through Wilma (no Q).
At this rate, they may have to press Xavier, Yolanda and Zack into service, then strat over again like with typhoons in the Western Pacific.

Why not name one "Queenie?" That could be interesting. Of course, we gay folk would get some backlash if the storm did any damage, but we are already blamed for hurricanes as it is, so... I can't think of other good "Q" names, but I am sure they are out there.

The character from Moby Dick? That would seem appropriate!
Of course, there's always his otherwordly cousin, Quark.

16. 16th Tropical System, 15th Named Storm |
|
they only get a name when they become a tropical storm. Depressions are classified as tropical systems, but do not get names.
One thing to keep in mind when comparing to previous years (like the 1920's and 1930's) is that they may have actually had more storms than the official records indicate. Nowadays, with satellites, we track everything. Back then, a little depression or even tropical storm that lasted a few days but didn't hit land and didn't interfere with shipping would have gone unnoticed.

19. "She is drowned, drowned." That's kind of creepy... |
|
Ophelia, for those who don't know the play Hamlet, went mad and drowned herself (possibly) due to grief over her father's death and the lies and mistreatment of her boyfriend Hamlet.
