Security incidents in Iraq, Sept 7

Sept 7 (Reuters) - Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Wednesday, Sept. 7, as of 1200 GMT.

U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.

Asterisk denotes new or updated item.

* BASRA - Bomb killed four U.S. security staff when it hit vehicle at around 8.30 a.m. (0430 GMT), U.S. embassy spokesman said in a statement. All four worked for private security firm supporting the Regional U.S. Embassy Office in Basra, embassy said.

BAGHDAD - An official in the Defence Ministry's media office was shot dead by gunmen in the Doura neighbourhood of Baghdad, the ministry said.

BAGHDAD - Iraqi police said six people were injured, including a U.S national, after a parked car blew up next to a sports utility vehicle, often used by contractors and officials in southern Baghdad.

LATIFIYA - Iraqi police said they captured a prominent insurgent in the volatile town of Latifiya, south of Baghdad. Hayder al-Shujeyri was arrested as he walked through a market.

* KALAR - One protester killed and 16 wounded in riots over failure to supply electricity and water, Dr Omar Aziz of Kalar's general hospital said. Several buildings set on fire including a children's hospital, radio station, fire department, education ministry building. Seventy protesters detained in this town near Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya.

* KHALIS - Insurgents killed four Iraqi soldiers and two civilians and injured seven others when they attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint in the town of Khalis, 45km (28 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
