Evacuees' stories are moving, but fence isn't (Denver Post)
If I didn't know better, I'd have thought I was peering through the fence at a concentration camp.

The signs on the buildings say "Community College of Aurora," though for now they're serving as an impromptu Camp Katrina. About 160 hurricane survivors are being housed in the dorms, surrounded by fences, roadblocks, security guards and enough armed police officers to invade Grenada.

There's a credentials unit to process every visitor, an intake unit to provide identification tags and a bag of clothes to every evacuee, several Salvation Army food stations, portable toilets, shuttle buses, a green army-tent chapel with church services three times a day and a communications team to keep reporters as far away from actual news as possible.

2. and remember who the force is aimed at
here where I am in Texas and everywhere else it is not for the safety of the residents in the shelters it is to keep them in. There are huge police presence, we can't get them to back off and the RC won't help us. If I hear the phrases "those people" or "these people" from one of them again I'm going to go nuts.

All we have here is people in another shelter with armed guards and endless offers of church services. We have 300 people and there were 4 services today with maybe 100 total attending. This upsets the other volunteers who say delightful things like "I thought black people were religious? Maybe that's only the ones who work..."

in-fucking-credible. I emailed with a vol from another state and its the same thing. Almost as many police/guards as residents. Like mine, her shelter is 90% women and children and old, old men. The families here are wondering where their men are and we can't find out.

nice. really nice. I'm off to serve dinner and help with the early evening stuff with kids so the mothers can have a break (which, btw, some vols don't think they need! try being without privacy, comfort or two moments to yourself entertaining a todler all day! Jeeeez)

bye

22. Sounds like you're surrounded by people like my fundie neighbor
The one who whispers the word "black" when she talks about someone, as in, "Well, they're black." Because, I guess, she thinks 'they' don't know that. It's a secret. :eyes: She's the most self-righteous, hypocritical, un-Christian creature that ever walked - other than her hero, the pResident.

Gov. MoFo may look coiffed and caring for the cameras, but he's obviously got the shelters locked down and guarded.

Whaaa? Damnit! Why isn't the media reporting this.

Are they trying to figure out who was hurting people in the Superdome? I have seen people say there were gangs in there hurting people. There was no law in there and everyone was evacuated. Is that what is going on?

This morning on CNN, Soledad was talking to a black woman with a baby and the woman said she wanted to get out of there because the people who had been hurting people got moved also. She looked really scared. She wouldn't let her toddler run around because she seemed scared.

That was the first time I saw anything about that.

43. Who was hurting people in Superdome? - read Charmaine Neville:
I found some police officers. I told them that a lot of us women had been raped down there by guys, not from the neighborhood where we were, they were helping us to save people. But other men, and they came and they started raping women and they started killing, and I don't know who these people were. I'm not gonna tell you I know, because I don't.

I wish I could ask Charmaine if they had Louisiana accents...

Maybe that's only the ones who work What a bigot. :grr: Maybe Bush** has found his new Supreme Court nominee. :sarcasm:

The dominant religion in South Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is Roman Catholicism, among both black and white residents. Gee, hundreds of Catholics not going to a fundie service? I'm shocked. Shocked! :sarcasm:

26. elaboration on the comment
this is not universal and we are not sure who is doing this or why. It might have been early on because the first groups in some areas were women and children who didn't know where husbands were sent. Other shelter workers have told us the same. Tonight (she just called home) several men arrived to join their families. We don't know yet if it was policy, a particular Texas screw up or complaints having an effect.

But, a colleague today told me that his mother volunteering in Missouri said the same of the first flight they got: women children old men and everyone looking for the adult younger men in the family who were put on "other" buses and ended up in other locations. I know I've also seen it in threads by others---check withthe really big shelter vols from Houston or Dallas they might know what the hell this was (is).

It would make a certain amount of sense if they used the "women and children" first routine to get people out of New Orleans and then they all ended up scattered everywhere.
