my confrontation with a co-worker today. I am still shaking

I was making copies for my students the next hour of news articles about Katrina

another teacher was in and he asked me.

"do you think those that didn't leave NO were just waiting for their welfare check"

that was all it took.

I said the following:

"excuse me, I can't believe you would be that heartless"

he said again "well don't you think so"

I said
"those people have no money, no cars, no gas, no credit cards and no where to go. Where do you suppose they go? I then said "did you know that some turned down help because they thought it would cost them and they couldn't afford it"

He said..No where did you hear that.

I replied "if you would bother to watch anything other than fox news you would have heard it on any other station.


I then said "I HOPE YOU ARE NOT TAKING THOSE FEELINGS INTO YOUR CLASSROOM. 80% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE IN THE WELFARE SYSTEM AND PROBABLY 15% HAVE FAMILY MEMEBERS MISSING IN NO"

he stuttered and stammered and I was so disgusted I just had to leave the copy room and go back to my room and cool down before students came in

I know. This would not work, but simulating for just an hour the conditions these people have been subjected to for a week might do some good.
