...I've done it, to -19 degrees (weekly Av) in New Hampshire...Best tips..heat as you can and where you can,but realize a single plumbing freeze can take your "saving" into the catastrophic zone...If you burn a (heater, burner,wood stove) right in the main section of your home WHERE MOST LIKELY YOUR THERMOSTAT IS that your furnace will have no problem at all sitting by WHILE YOUR PIPES FREEZE...your first hint will be when you relieve youself in a chilled water closet,flush the toilet and hear NOTHING...I could go on but a better idea would be to say that if you spot heat this winter,look into heater tapes to keep perimeter pipes from freezing...If you do not understand this either check into this or do NOT spot heat...
