The Constitution is not a suicide pact!
How many times have we heard this since 9/11 in defense of measures that erode our civil liberties for the sake of better security?

Maybe it's time we turned this around by suggesting that because Bush has become such a danger to the republic that having him removed from office despite being elected is a just cause. Just because the Constitution says he gets to stay through January, 2009 doesn't mean that we the people have to absolutely accept this if we believe this president isn't doing what he should to protect us from great harm. If Bush is dangerous to the republic that the Consitution ordained, aren't we obliged to see him removed?

2. That phrase is supposed to mean something else.
It's supposed to mean that when lives are on the line whatever the red tape involved THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO ACT. That is, ultimately, his job, and he is, ultimately, the only one who can do that job. If cutting through the red tape is technically illegal, the right thing, great minds have argued, to do, is to do whatever it takes to protect lives and property and then throw himself upon the mercy of Congress to impeach him for his service to the Republic, if it dares.

How truly sad I am that Bush has not taken the legal theories of his own administration to heart and used them in the one instance that the public would have considered wholly and immensely justified.
