Nightline. "I'm not like those Democrats who expect free handouts"
(paraphrased) from a man in NOLA who Ted walked up to as he was clearing trees from his property. Ted asked him what he was doing and he said he was working to clear his property because he "wasn't like those Democrats who expect free handouts." Damn. Democrats are the only ones fighting for his city and state! Have I told you lately how much I hate these repuke people? :grr:

We'll see how much he loves his fucking repuke dictator when he has to leave NOLA.

29. Uh uh
My B-I-L just told me they don't treat blacks badly in the south anymore.

Right before he told this joke..

What did Jesus say to the black people? Don't do anything until I get back.

And he really believes he's not a racist. What do you do with people like that?

6. I totally agree
since it is no longer PC to say racial slurs people code it as "people who expect hand outs". I just got in a debate at my college about this tonight. Sickening. I also had a girl tell me that We should close our borders because she was sick of seeing Mohammed at every gas station. I need to move.

Just curious.

Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 11:06 AM by in_cog_ni_to
the movie was filmed there. The street Desire, use to have a streetcar that ran from where he stood to downtown New Orleans. That's all I know. There IS a street named "Desire" because they showed the street sign.

Here's a Google search I did. It has some pages on Desire Street

33. Desire Street (originally Désirée Street) was created and named in ...
... the early 19th Century, when Robert Montreuil named two of the streets cut through his platnation land for his daughters Désirée and Elmire. A muddled English translation of Désirée produced Desire, a street which today runs from the Mississippi river through the heart of Bywater almost to Lake Pontchartrain.

The play, "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennesee Williams and later made into a movie by Elia Kazan, opened on Broadway in 1947 and won Williams a New York's Critics Circle Award and a Pullitzer Prize.

32. Well, I think it'd be a start.
Hell, we HAVEN'T shown up down here in years.

Are there racists here? Sure. But there are racists everywhere - they're not just limited to the South.

I think actually competing in the South instead of rolling over would do a lot more for the Democratic cause in the long run. But, think what you will. You obviously have your own prejudices.

34. Nonsense
Clinton, Gore, Begala, Carville. Democrats put up a helluva fight for the south. It's pointless and it's beyond racism. You can't have Democrats who believe in government "showing up" to "compete" for votes from folks who don't believe in government at all. The only result will be compromise in the national party which will piss people off too. These folks will never vote their economic interest because they don't see government as having any role in their personal finances in the first place. The only people who vote their economic interest are "those Democrats" and we now know who "those Democrats" are. Call it prejudice, call it whatever you want. I'm tired of good Democrats being blamed for the backwards attitudes of the south.

39. Bullshit.
No one is blaming "good" Democrats for any attitude, anywhere.

Clinton won the South, you misinformed soul. That's how he won the fucking presidency.

Gore lost because of the unspoken meme in his (and my) home state that he would take away guns - something he and his campaign never even addressed! Gore didn't even half-assed campaign in his freakin' home state! And, then, you wonder why he lost it? It wasn't OUR attitudes, it was his (and I LOVE Al Gore).

And, Kerry? Kerry put up a helluva fight for the South? When? By picking Edwards? Bullshit. Edwards was NO Southerner's idea of a fellow Southerner - but that's another story. Kerry didn't even BOTHER to come to the South. He conceded it before he started. Yeah, he made pop appearances in Arkansas, Louisiana and Virginia, but he couldn't be bothered to come into the rest of the place.

So, DO NOT give me that BULLSHIT that the Democrats "put up a helluva fight" because, since Clinton, it simply has NOT been true.

So, who's attitude is backward? The South's? Or the Democratic Party's? I think the latter for not even bothering to show up. You can't win if you don't race.

19. I've known a lot of guys like him.
A lot put 20 years into peace-time military, usually the Navy or Air Force, in a support MOS.
Then they find a good federal desk job, in the back office not actually providing first-hand services, long enough to qualify for a civil service pension.
Then they hook up with a military crony in the private sector, usually a federal contractor to the agency they worked for, and work long enough to collect their retirement benfits.

Then they sit back collecting three pensions along with social security and bad-mouth the people who pay for all that.

Meanwhile, their kids are educated at public expense, they drive on public highways, and shop at the PX ... or in Mexico.

They call themselves "rugged individualists."

28. Since Clinton
the country's been heading this way, almost completely divided along party lines. It's really awful when we dismiss whole segments of the population merely for their political choices. And, not knowing his age but that he's obviously from the south, I'll go out on a limb and say this guy had a little history in his venom. We need to pull together across party lines to succeed but it's not going to happen anytime soon.
