WASHINGTON - Dispossessed families of Hurricane Katrina will receive debit cards good for $2,000 to spend on clothing and other immediate needs, the Bush administration announced Wednesday, working to recast a relief effort drawing scant praise from Republicans and scathing criticism from top congressional Democrats.

President Bush is "oblivious, in denial, dangerous," when it comes to the plight of the storm's victims, charged House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Her Senate counterpart, Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), asked pointedly whether the chief executive impeded relief efforts by remaining at his Texas ranch last week while the storm churned toward the Gulf Coast.

Democrats attacked as House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist announced creation of an unusual joint House-Senate panel to investigate the government's readiness for Katrina as well as its response. "Americans deserve answers," they said in a statement, setting a Feb. 15, 2006, deadline for a report.

At the White House, spokesman Scott McClellan defended Bush from Democratic attacks but conceded, "There are ongoing problems on the ground, and that's why we're working to address those issues."

That is all they are worth, leaving their lives, homes and being separated from their families?

1. Do they have to sign something saying they can't sue anyone
in order to get these pennies?

5. Is it hush money?
I've been gone all day with no internets access, so am not really sure what the money is for.

Dounds like they are trying to bribe poor people into silence.

Just my humble opinion.

I hear they didn't even check if the person was actually affected by the hurricane.

6. I don't know how much the Florida hurricane 'victims' rec'd
Would be interesting to find out tho.

Since they are scattered out throughout the country now, most of whom have no identification with them, I doubt everyone of the survivors would be eligible.

4. Indians who survived the Trail of Tears also
got a few dollars from the Federal Government -- after filling out a request, listing their pedigree.

For Genealogists this is a wonderful resource -- but at the same time we are well aware of the Genocide of the US Government -- and Andrew Jackson.

What happens to the poor who had cars and who got out before the hurricane and flood? Are they *hit out of luck? In fact people who used to be middle class before Katrina may now be among the poor -- because many of the middle class are just one paycheck away from poverty.

I believe this will be just the tip of the iceberg.
