4. I'm with you.
In all honesty, I have just as much trouble with abandoned/lost animals as I do people.

Flame if you must, but remember, these are my feelings, not thoughts.

Give $$$ to you local Humane Society disaster relief.

18. I am more sorry for the human loss,
but I feel sad about the plight of the animals, as well. I donated a bit to the Humane Society. Most of my donations, however, went to aiding people.

I can't really compare the loss of pets to the loss of human beings. But, at the same time, the animals limited understanding of what is happening makes my heart go out to them, as well. (Besides, my cat was rescued from the flooded south a year ago, and she's been our companion for the last 9 months! That alone makes me sympathetic to all the displaced animals.)

6. Dead animals are like dead babies ...

Our animal pets our dependent on us just like children. So they are often perceived in the same way.

I saw some video of people camping on a bridge in New Orleans with three Pit Bull Terriers. I said ... DAMN STRAIGHT!!!

I would build a raft and PADDLE OUT of New Orleans before I abandoned my dog.

7. I heard some woman on the radio yesterday
being interviewed about why she won't evacuate.

She won't leave her animals behind.

I relate. I wouldn't leave mine, either. They are family. They are my dependents. They provide an unlimited supply of unconditional love and trust, 24/7. How could I dishonor that trust?

And, on another note, with all the searching left to be done, and the bodies not yet found and picked up, who wants packs of starving dogs and cats roaming?

9. For many people, their pets are like children in their minds--
especially for childless people or older folks whose kids have left home.
And to throw a little off the wall esoterica into the mix--some believe that domesticated animals that live closest to people will be the next group to incarnate as humans in the far distant future....

10. I don't get it. If we saw rescuers going in and saving animals but leaving
humans behind, wouldn't you scoffers be upset? Please, get a heart.

Some people are showing a little too much "compassionate conservatism."

13. Whats really sad about the animals.....
How many people "forgot" to let the dog off the chain in the back yard or didn't release them from the kennel. You know it had to have happened.
On a brighter note, my local humane society has been taking in lost pets from the storm and from evacuee's who can't care for them during this difficult time. They are calling out for supplies and I just happen to have some crates and I will soon have extra dog and cat food to contribute.

14. All of it is so goddamn awful. The people, the little kids, the pets,
the suffering of all life. If I could go back in time and trade myself for one of them, I would.

15. Rescue groups all over the nation are planning to take them in
We're working on it. We raised about $1300 on Saturday and received about 30 donated crates to send to NO to hold the pets. If the guardian can't be found we expect them to be distributed to rescues around the country to be rehomed. We're trying to clear out as much space as possible in anticipation of some of them coming to us.

Animals are remarkably resilient. If we can get them either back to their original guadians or find new guardians for them, they will be fine. Rest assured that groups are doing everything they can to ensure that the animals are not euthanized but are rehomed.

Here's our rescue site:

And our petfinder site:

23. I'm with you
But I have to tell you, I would have enough food and water on hand to last for a couple of weeks. That way, I wouldn’t have to abandon them.
