Got this in an e-mail
There has been a lot of discussion about what is going on with the flooding
and destruction that Katrina has caused, especially in the New Orleans area.
Here is the real cause of the disaster in New Orleans:
In the early 1940's New Orleans and Louisiana decided that dikes that would
hold back a cat 5 hurricane were too expensive. They decided that protection
for a storm of this magnitude would only be needed once in a hundred years
or so and the money could be better spent on other, "more important" items.
Even though the city has been warned by numerous cat 5 storms, that were
near misses, they did not choose to build up their protection to the level
required. The Federal government couldn't go in and say; "You have to build
a better wall and bigger pumps to protect your citizens", when Roosevelt was
in office or any of those presidents who have served so well since. The
responsibility for the damage, destruction and lost lives rests on the city
and state governments. That people are placing blame on the federal
government for the atrocities and catastrophic effects of this hurricane on
an area that decided protection was more expensive than the value of its
people, shows the lack of understanding of the reality of what has happened.
The city government has known that a cat 5 storm would come and what it
would do. They did nothing. THEY killed thousands of people with their lack
of responsible behavior. They didn't even bother to maintain the weak walls
and pumping system that was in place. The city and state governments showed
total disregard for their citizens and gross negligence in the protection
that they gave the citizenry of their city and state. They now have the
unmitigated gall to blame the feds for their predicament? I have to call BS!
This is their own fault - the feds are doing everything they can to resolve
the situation but are hindered by the laws that are in place (army can't be
used as a police force against the civilian population) to protect us from
the federal government. This isn't about dollars - it is about how to get
the billions of gallons of water out of an area that is below sea level
without any way to keep the sea out because of broken sea walls that have
been ignored since they were built in the 1940's. We can't get enough people
and buckets to move the ocean that fast. Some have said that they could do
better - BS! They have no idea how to get rid of 12 feet of water over an
area as large as the flooded area of that one city with a leak that leads
right to the ocean that allows water in as fast as you can get it out. The
wall can't be fixed until you can get people in to fix it - that isn't
possible yet - the water is toxic, the air is full of biohazards and the
masons who would be working would have to wear biohazard suits to work - NOT
GONNA HAPPEN!
Grow up! This is a disaster that could have easily been avoided and wasn't -
it is not the feds fault; it is negligence on the part of city planners and
the state emergency preparedness effort. It is nothing short of criminal to
allow them to duck their responsibility in this event and allow them to
place blame on the federal government.
Understand that this is a situation that is going to take time to engineer a
fix for and it will only happen again unless the city and state step up and
build real protection around the city of New Orleans.

UPDATE: after placing steel plates and 500 pound sandbags to hold them in
place the 14th street dike has been patched - it is leaking but more water
is being pumped out than in. The water level dropped eight inches in
twenty-four hours - it is progress.

MY REPLY:

Absolutely ignoring the fact that NOLA, like many other cities and regions in this country, are TERRIBLY underfunded and continually operating under a budgetary crisis.

Ignoring the fact that the Army Corps of Engineers were pulled off the project before it was finished--by federal order.

Ignoring the fact that despite begging for funding from the feds for years, the project was deliberately scuttled...

And what about the aftermath? The President, Vice President, and Secretary of State out having a good time while American citizens were dying?

So that's okay?

They were mostly poor black folks anyway, so who gives a rat's ass, right?

Anyone notice this regime has the reverse Midas touch?
