Wow, my Freeper neighbor just came over....(holey crikey!)
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 09:46 AM by TwoSparkles
My daughter and I were out raking the leaves earlier this morning.

My car, which sports a "John Kerry For President" bumper sticker, sat on the driveway.

We just moved into our neighborhood a month ago. I've never had a political discussion with any of our friendly neighbors, and was unaware that I was living next door to a real, live Freeper.

As he walks past, we exchange friendly "hellos" and he says, "Nice bumper sticker."

I wasn't sure WHAT to say. I wasn't sure where he was going. And hey, I have to share a property line with this guy for the next few decades!

"Yeah," I said calmly. "I'm kinda still in mourning and I keep the bumper sticker on to let people know that I didn't vote for George Bush."

He looked at me and said, "Do you want to know something ironic?"

Oh no, I thought. Here we go...

With rake in hand, prepared for some verbal sparring, I braced myself.

"I don't know if you noticed, but our minivan had a "W" sticker on it." I chuckled and replied, "No, sorry I missed that!"

"Well, guess what," He said, "I scraped it off last night."

I'm such a smart ass. I was trying to keep things light, and I said, "What...were you replacing your small W with a life-sized poster of the president?"

He looked defeated. And somber. He said, "I voted for the man. Twice. I supported the Iraq war. I still do. I've been a Republican all of my life and my father was a Republican state representative. Anyone can see that he's lying about the hurricane disaster. My wife and I are in shock. We voted for Bush because we agreed with him on terrorism, family values and abortion. We feel betrayed."

He continued, "What bothers me the most if that he's lying. They left people to die and they continually lie about their response and their inability to get into New Orleans. It's all lies. It makes us wonder about all of the other lies."

Ok, I would have liked to bopped him over the head with my rake and screamed, "I told you so!" but this guy was clearly in mourning. He believed in something and someone--and now he was seeing the muck beneath the campaign slogans and political marketing.

I actually felt sorry for him.

I said, "You know what. It's ok. George Bush is only one man. He's not the entire Republican party. The Republican party will be ok. He fooled a lot of people. Work to hold him accountable and make sure you express your views to your Republican friends, so something can be done."

He said, "Oh, They know now. That's all they're talking about. They know."

So....that's what happened in the middle of America, in the suburbs. I hope little miracles like this are happening all over our country.

His 2006 reelection campaign is sure going to be interesting to watch as the Bush* numbers continue to tumble. Do you think even Delay will have to back away from Bush* for political survival?

because I'm almost afraid to believe what I'm seeing/hearing.

I received MANY similar comments from Repubs while manning the County Party Booth at the fair last weekend. It's almost too much to hope for.

I've never disliked Republicans, we have always been able to get along just fine together but this George W. Bush** personality cult group scares the crap out of me...fortunately they are about to be overrun by the "paleo-conservatives"......I hope.

38. I agree about Republicans vs. Bush cultists.
I honestly don't think it's Republicans per se that are the problem, even though I generally don't agree with them. But these cult people who blindly back Bush with no regard for the consequences of anything he says or does, now that's scary.

These people are Republicans and voted for Bush* because of Republicanism not because of Bush*. Remember how Clinton was treated? These people were the cheering section for the Clinton abuse. If they truly believed Bush* was any of the things they say I wonder why. What has Bush* ever accomplished to give them that idea? They have never paid one whit of attention to Bush*'s past or his business history. It isn't Bush* they back it is the Republican agenda. That is not going to change anytime soon and Bush* is a lame duck anyway. Nobody is going to vote for Bush* again but they will still vote for their Republican Agenda and that is what is destroying America not Bush*. It is the Republican LIES not bush*'s LIES that need to be addressed.

Good advice on taking his party back though, but he needs to be informed otherwise he'll just end up with another bush clone.

123. "Bush and the CONSERVATIVES do not represent the
Republican Party..." The word is Conservative. Once the Republican Party was tempered by the number of moderates, and moderate-to-progressive elements in its rank. Now the party is a Flag-Draped, Corporate Whoring cult of Conservative only values. It happens when the standing of a country falls.

Out of control spending
Huge deficits
foreign "adventures"
butting into peoples private lives
spying on the US citizens
compromising legal due process

The only standard conservative characteristics I see in him are: hating gays and trying to shove his religion down everyone's throat.

Oh that and mindless jingoism. Yea, God is an American, didn't you know?

10. But, that's exactly the point.
We get so angry when we know that someone supports Bush or Republicans in general. But, the truth is, only 20% of the party really buys into that hardline PNAC bullshit. The rest are honest, hard working people, just like the base of our party.

And, yes, honestly, we have not done the best job appealing to people and the majority of the blame falls on the media and Limbaugh, Hannity and the rest of the hate spewing "entertainers." But, just remind everyone of Bush's campaign promise to be a uniter and not a divider, something that he's failed miserably in.

I, personally, know a lot of republicans and have a large amount of respect and affection for the majority that I know, even though I personally feel that they are wrong in their political views. But, the difference of opinion is exactly what makes America great and the fact that people have tried to take that away is what pisses me off the most.

22. The Images Were Too Damning...
The words of "Brownie" saying he knew nothing about the convention center while the dying are show on the split screen. The screamings of Anderson Cooper, Geraldo, Shep Smith, Brian Williams and many others put forth the question..."do you believe me or do you believe your lying eyes?"

People saw several very troubling things in their manchild in the past week. His taking his time to get back and then LYING (and this one he can't deny) about not knowing about the severity of the storm. His photo-op around the region on Friday was such a bust, they had to damage control that one all weekend and try it again on Monday.

At home, while the people and a city was dying right on their television screens, millions around the country were seeing their own city or town and wondering if this could happen to them. Gone in an instant was that security blanket that this regime will "keep you safe". If anything, they see how the politics trumps the human. It's what they hated about Clinton and they're seeing it all over again.

I don't think we really know the fall-out of this. And it'll depend on how Democrats play the many questions raised in this disaster. This regime and the Repugnican party have opened up a big wound, one I don't think they can bandage up with talking points and photo ops anymore. It's now ingrained in too many memories.

I live in Jacksonville, FL. Just about as red city as you can find in Florida. It's the deafing silence coming from all my freep neighbors and friends. Every repub that I know is not talking about it with me. It's like it never happened. I think they are to embarassed to talk about it. I will not start the conversation with them either, let them stew in the fact that they have been lied to. Let them remember all the conversations, the battles we had before '04. I relish the fact that they now know I was right.

Your freeper neighbors and friends may well understand that it could literally be them in dire straits on the news when the next big hurricane hits Florida. Junior, their hero, would ditch them. Maybe they've twigged to that idea. Maybe.

40. Blame game, blame game, blame game
Bad mayor, bad mayor, bad mayor.

Whiney governor, whiney governor, whiney governor.

It AIN'T WORKING...WHY????

Because those folks had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PRICE OF GAS AND HOME HEATING OIL!!!!!!! And even the diehards KNOW IT.

All politics is local, and the GOP are a bunch of selfish pricks. While some of them can deal with the death by the thousands of strangers, they take issue when they have to pay seventy bucks to gas up the car....

The ones who are troubled by the death and misery of this storm are the ones who were raised right, or who are thinking, hey, those uncaring bastards could very well kill ME and MY loved ones with the same sort of neglect and lack of care.

We're all just a storm or terror attack away from our own private Katrinas...and clearly, we cannot depend on them to help us.

It ain't a good feeling...

33. The perspective of an OLDER FART
Some of you were just a twinkle in your daddy's eye when Nixon fell, but let me tell you, the mood FEELS VERY MUCH THE SAME.

For the longest time, with all the stonewalling, prevaricating, fortress mentality, lockstep discipline, repeated talking points, and refusal to address the issues even when pressed, the Nixon White House hung on. Some folks thought he would get away with it. But history tells us that when he fell, he fell HARD.

Now is not the time to be disheartened, now is the time to continue to PRESS, PUSH, SHOVE and DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY. No more tricks, no more distractions--when they try to change the subject, we need to kindly and gently stick a hot poker up their asses and force them to address THEIR failings, and not permit them to cast blame to local governments, or pull out a woman in a vegetative state, or manufacture a fake news story over the status of some woman's womb. We need to stay on point, on message, like David Gregory beating the ever-lovin' shit out of Scotty McClellan.

The other thing is, and this is harder to do, we MUST NOT GLOAT. We are the "civil" party, we listen to the ideas of others, even when they have their heads up their asses. We must take the approach that reasonable people can disagree, reasonably, and bring them along to our side with real compassion, not the bullshit compassion of a party that wants to concentrate wealth amongst their own fatcat members.

TwoSparkles, you handled that exchange EXACTLY RIGHT. I congratulate you.

65. Excellent post.
As was TwoSparkles'.

I returned from a trip last night that took me through Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. I was with family who I love dearly. They're Republicans. "We must not gloat" is, imho, crucial in helping those who supported Bush come to terms with their own sense of betrayal. I did not 'convert' my family, but I gave them a few things to consider and I will 'gently' continue to give them the factual materials that will help them to make better informed decisions in the future.

I also met a couple of people(a store owner, a lawyer & a fireman who was on his way to NOLA) all in 'transition'. People are waking up - and that's what matters. We have a chance to have a civilized dialogue with many and we need to welcome them, not chastise them.

118. We don't have to convert Republicans...
we just need them to be willing to consider the alternative and really listen to the message that the Democratic Party is bringing to the table.

It's your government. It exists to help Americans. Competent independent people should be chosen as our Representatives. Professionals, not in the pockets of the big money special interests, should head government agencies. The current GOP political appointees are not competent and serve primarily the interests of their big money supporters.

When a disaster occurs, I want a disaster management professional in charge, not the former head of Bush/Cheney public relations in the last campaign.

Democrats will restore integrity and responsiveness to our government, take it away from the special interests and return it to the people.

This is something most Republicans can support.

Your were so gracious in your response - I am sure the ripple effect of this country's shock over Katrina does include masses of people waking up and seeing what kind of a person our President is... (his mother's statement at the Astrodome, didn't help either. I would imagine it's a genetic thing.)

I think the anger is just setting in, and I hope it continues until the entire White House administration is impeached, tried and convicted.

Thanks again

Hating Liberals is ingrained on their very souls. They are in the grip of a cult. Nothing less. It's how they define themselves.

And yet... they are losing their jobs or sliding backward on the pay-scale right along with me and you. And Rush and Hannity preached for years that full Republican control would bring them endless supplies of gasoline at prices cheaper than water. THAT betrayal, the one that slaps 'em right in the face at the gas pump, really has them stinging with a combination of rage and shame.

Stay tuned.

and you know something, he says "We voted for Bush because we agreed with him..." and Jerry Springer brought this up yesterday, we always talk about whether we agree with candidates, but we never think about whether they'll be competent to do their jobs when in office... Bush isn't able to get it done, whether it's what we agree with or not, he just can't get it done... and that's the end of the story.

Don't need to get them to change parties. They should look at not only Bush and his misAdministration, but your local reps and how they are handling this. If your local politicians are mouthing the party line, reinforce the point about the other lies. All of us should seriously reevaluate anyone that is lined up with them, regardless of their party. We won't always be able to find a better alternative to some of the incumbents, so be prepared to lean on them to move them away from the dark side. Most of them want to keep their jobs, so now may be the chance to convince them that serving the public good is in their own best interests and make sure to keep an eye on their every move.

For those of us who actually have compassion for someone outside our own borders, this guy is the essence of ignorance. I wasn't expecting that type of story. Wow. I also know how it feels to find out your government has been lied to. In 2000 I wanted Al Gore to win since I adore him and think he's brilliant and could do so much for this country. This was before I was a democrat officially and my views on things have changed. Then in 2004 I saw F911 and other movies and just educated myself. I was so disgusted. *sigh* So I know how it feels and in 2000 I was starting to like Bush but then I found out the truth about him and his whole family and now I despise them. I remember reading when Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 voting rights act he said the democrats will lose the south. So could Katrina make Bush lose track? We all know they won't do anything. *sigh*

Tax cuts for the rich, at the expense of domestic programs.

Installing inexperienced, incompetent political cronies in critical positions. (Iraq admin, FEMA, ???)

If there were an election at this moment, Bush would win, probably by more than the 2 1/2% he is alleged to have won by in 04.

It doesn't matter who votes; all that matters is who counts the votes!

The machines are obviously, transparently rigged. Kerry won by 3% overall, by 3 1/2% in OH and probably won by a squeaker in FL.

How do I know? The exit polls told me so.

(and thank you for your post). The Republican Party will NOT be OK. They've allowed the fundamentalist element to dictate their agenda. Tom Delay, Rick Santorum, and born-again Bush have taken the Republican party so far to the right, and let evangelicals dictate so much of their legislation, that the party is split. The Pastor Project wants only evangelical Christians as Republican nominees. At a time when our country is facing so many significant challenges, our debates center on gay marriage, women's right to choose (which we thought we had settled years ago), and the separation of church and state -- which our founders thought they had settled years ago.
His party is NOT OK. It's a very dangerous party which seeks to govern through religion.

108. it's a bitch when they find out there is no santa claus...
They laud over asshole* like he's some sort of god, then when he shows his real colors to the repukes, it's like they lost their best friend. What the fuck????

Fuck damn shit, it takes the death of thousands for these assholes to finally wake up!!! Damn it! Because, you know, thousands of Iraqi civilians just aren't human to them or their death just doesn't have the same meaning as if it was an American after all...:sarcasm:

I sincerely hope to God that these rightwing puke in their eye assholes, are really getting and eye and ear full of their fucked up fearless leader* and not only take him* to task for his* heartless inability to help people but also take a hard look at the other repuke assholes out there as well.

You had shown remarkable restraint, I would have kicked him in the ass and told him, thank you for aiding and abetting this moron* in the white house.

colossal failure*.

109. You handled it well and your reaction is the same as mine
When you see a freeper becoming a human being it is quite a sight to behold....you can't help but look in awe and have an "I told you so!!" response pulled from the conversation.

I'm such a smart ass. I was trying to keep things light, and I said, "What...were you replacing your small W with a life-sized poster of the president?"

You're such a bastard. Sounds like something I would've said thanks for the laugh :)

110. WELCOME these people, I say. I didn't used to feel this way, but
we have to realize that it's a miracle that some people are able to wake up at all. In some cases, their entire world view is at stake and could come crashing down. I can attest to the fact that this HURTS. A lot. Of course, one should always seek the truth no matter what, but it isn't always easy.

I, for one, would welcome my family to reality with open arms.

notice all the lies before the election.
