I throughly despise my local newspaper. Got this back regarding my LTTE...
Some background. Here's the letter that set me off and prompted my letter:

Of course, to the Democrats, President Bush is guilty of everything.
The truth of the matter is that two Democrats are primariliy at fault for much of what happened.
Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin failed in every aspect before and after the hurricane. These two are accountable for this tragedy.
Blanco did not have the ability to lead or respond. Nagin ran to the plush Hyatt Hotel with all his buddies, and helped them to the front of the line when it was time to get out of town.
Both, being typical Democrats, blamed everybody else for what was going on.
In fact, their lack of leadership made them the problem.

---------------------------------

I responded:

In a recent letter to Florida Today, a reader accused Democrats of rushing to blame President Bush while placing the blame on the Democratic Governor of Louisiania and Democratic Mayor of New Orleans despite documented evidence to the contrary.

On Saturday, August 27, Mayor Nagin issued the evacuation order and advertised a 1-800 number for needy residents to call for an RTA bus to come pick them up. He requested buses and drivers to get people out and was told by FEMA that he couldn't do it because there was no where to send them. He requested the Superdome as a shelter and was told no. When they finally agreed, he requested supplies for at least 10,000 people. And was told no...by the federal government.

On Sunday, August 28, prior to the storm hitting,Governor Blanco complied with the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act as dictated to states by federal law. Both officials took proper steps following President Bush declaring their territory federal disaster areas on August 26.

Your reader, and others like him need to remember two things. The federal government is reportedly failing victims in all affected areas, not just New Orleans. Responsibility defies the law of gravity and runs uphill.

------------------------

The Editor told me they couldn't publish it because there was no documented proof of my content. I sent them links provided by this site. And I asked them why the other reader's letter passed editorial muster. Here's the reply:

The published version of the letter you are questioning actually was edited slightly by our staff to bring it into agreement with the Associated Press and CNN reports (among others) that have moved on the Hyatt incident. Though the reader did make some minor errors (regarding Nagin's whereabouts at that time), the incident to which the letter was referring was clear to us, and we were able to fix the misstatement we detected. The characterization of that event remained that of the letter writer, which is appropriate in a letter to the editor.

-----------------------

My response back:

Ah, I see. So if it’s fair to print the insinuation Nagin and his buddies were living the plush life at the Hyatt because it was the opinion of the writer, don’t bother printing my response. I’ll compose a new one categorizing Bush as an incompetent boob divorced from reality – a modern day Nero fiddling while Rome burned, if you will. Since that happens to be my opinion of his trip out west prior to returning to Washington to ‘lead’ relief efforts, I’m assuming that would pass editorial muster?

I apologize if I’m taking my frustration out on you, I’m just horribly frustrated with the news media. Having worked with newspapers in my younger days, I’m appalled at how both print and televised journalism has changed since the far right took over American politics.

I sincerely hope someone else wrote a letter you can publish which offers an opposing viewpoint from the reader who obviously gets all his news from Karl Rove’s ‘Talking Points’.

Regards

1. damn, that's great. Although I give the paper some cred
for actually taking the time to explain why they blew you off.

Most, IME, wouldn't bother.

But I love how you handled that; I hope that you've shamed the editor into rethinking the initial decision.

3. Quite a catch-22 there
At this paper it's simple - facts don't matter.

4. You should not have apologized
This paper is part of the problem, certainly not an innocent bystander.

11. But it still doesn't specifically say that FEMA turned down Nagin
and his request for transportation and use of the Superdome. I need something that shows he asked for help and FEMA said no.

13. I found the post on DU on the links you were given yesterday...
but the person who wrote it did not supply a link. At this point it is possible that we goofed. I don't think so because I could have sworn I heard Nagin say something along those lines on television last week but you can't exactly cite a television interview if you can't remember when and where you saw it. I'm so sorry!!!

16. I'm looking, but so far, nothing. Of course, I have yet to go to bed,

and it's almost 9am and I'm kinda sleepy, so that could be why I'm blanking out at the moment. lol?

The only 'official' press release I could find was this:

C. Ray Nagin
MAYOR FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 27, 2005

Mayor Nagin Urges Citizens to Prepare For Hurricane Katrina

(New Orleans, LA) In response to the potential threat of Hurricane Katrina, Mayor C. Ray Nagin is urging all citizens to begin preparations now for the coming storm. Mayor Nagin will hold the next press briefing at 5 p.m. today in the Mayor’s Press Room, second floor of City Hall.

“Although the track could change, forecasters believe Hurricane Katrina will affect New Orleans,” said Mayor Nagin. “We may call for a voluntary evacuation later this afternoon or tomorrow morning to coincide with the instatement of contraflow. This will give people more options to leave the area. However, citizens need to begin preparing now so they will be ready to leave when necessary. Do everything to prepare for a regular hurricane, but treat this one differently because it is headed our way. This is not a test.”

The Mayor also recommended that residents of Algiers, the Lower Ninth Ward and low-lying areas begin evacuating now.

Gov. Blanco also urged citizens to take the storm seriously. “We can restore property, but we cannot restore lives,” she said.

Mayor Nagin is working with Gov. Kathleen Blanco and other City, local and State officials are watching the storm’s path and working together to make decisions that affect citizens. Gov. Blanco has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, which provides city government with additional authority and improved access to resources needed when responding to elevated threats, such as natural disasters.

A state of emergency has been declared for the City of New Orleans. Citizens are advised to:
• Fill their cars with gas. Tolls have been suspended on roadways.
• Remove potential debris from their yards (including lawn furniture, potted plants, loose tree branches, etc.)
• Board windows and glass doors
• Make sure that nearby catch basins are clear of leaves or trash
• Stock up on bottled water, batteries, and non-perishable food items
• Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially the elderly, to make sure everyone has an evacuation plan
• Make provisions for pets. Shelters and many hotels do not accept pets.
-MORE-

“The key is being prepared for the event,” said Mayor Nagin. “We’re doing everything we can to make sure our city is safe.”

Shelters for Citizens with Special Medical Needs

There are two shelters for people with special medical needs open in the state. Citizens should call prior to going to the shelters. The shelter in Alexandria can be reached at (800) 841-5778; the number for Monroe’s shelter is (866) 280-7287. If it becomes necessary, other shelters will be opened in various cities. The Superdome will be opened as a refuge of last resort for special needs patients if it becomes necessary. All individuals may have one caretaker.

Anyone planning to spend time in a shelter should bring three to four days’ worth of food, sleeping gear, and medical supplies including oxygen, medicine and batteries for any necessary devices. No weapons or bulky items are allowed in any shelters.

New Orleans EMS is responding to medical emergencies only. For non-emergency transportation needs, citizens should contact local non-emergency ambulance providers:

Acadian: (504) 366-0911
Lifeguard: (504) 214-1911
Guardian: (504) 818-2600
A-Med: (504) 362-9490
Care: (504) 367-4231
On-Call: (504) 866-0481

Closings
New Orleans Public Schools will be closed Monday, August 29, 2005. All NOPS activities scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled.

New Orleans Public Libraries will close at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, August 27, 2005, and remain closed through Monday, August 29, 2005.

The City of New Orleans will be issuing additional advisories as the storm progresses. Citizens are asked to remain alert, monitor news stories and be prepared to respond promptly to any public safety advisories.

8. Been there....
This past weekend I was attempting to correct a local radio show hosts claim that Gov. Kathleen Blanco did nothing in regard to requesting help from the Federal government. I had a copy of the 4 page letter she had sent on the 28TH. I sat on hold for an hour an continued to hear one Bush cheerleader after another spew lies. Frustrating.

12. Resubmit...
Delete the comments about the Superdome. Stop with the Nagin paragraph after the 1-800 number. Supply a link to the timeline and tell them you expect to see the facts published now that you have removed information that they cannot source.

Add the following question:

As an aside, what is your news outlet going to do with the information that Bush's response to Gov. Blanco's Aug. 27 request for a state of emergency declaration back dated to Aug. 26 included northern parishes in Louisiana but omitted coastal and southern parishes?

Gov. Blanco's request:
http://gov.louisiana.gov/Press_Release_detail.asp?id=976

White House response omitting affected areas:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/08/20050827-1.html

Gov. Blanco has to request clarification:
http://www.gratisnet.com/KatrinaHelp.pdf

Southeastern parishes were specified in both of Blanco requests, but are NOT included in the Bush press release about the state of emergency.

All of these are links to official documents so they ought to ease the editor's conscience.

Easy enough!

15. I gave them at least 5 links including a report by the Times-Picayune.
It's not like I sent them Joe Blow's blog, LOL. Oh well. I'm sure I've got this editor ticked at me, so I'll confine my letter writing to the larger metropolitan paper an hour west of me. :-)

17. Just figured out what is bugging me about this.
If they could edit the other guy's letter, why couldn't they just edit out the Superdome part and print the rest? Someone's running scared.
