2. Believe it or not, I can't disagree with this thread
This is one of those rare threads on FR that brings up some valid points.

First of all, is the Red Cross really the most effective charity out there? Or are they just mired in bureaucracy?

I'm sure there are a lot of charities out there that are more effective. And not all faith-based charities are like Operation Blessing, which is a charity that puts gas in Pat Robertson's private jet and helps him buy diamond mines.

3. Without even reading that, here's why I personally don't like the

4. YOU are the winner!!!!
Don't you just LOVE those "charities" that pay huge salaries to CEOs?

I'm not saying anyone who works for a non-profit has to take a vow of poverty--but give me a break... I put United Way in that same category.

6. Check out orgs like:
Doctors Without Borders

Childrens' Network International

and so on. Charity Navigator is a great tool.

5. I don't care for the Red Cross after the 911 fiasco
to divide the money donated to only the families immediately affected by the event and to not do it equally just plain sucks. They should have set much of that money aside for the future victims: the ones that will become sick over the next decade from breathing in all the poisons spewed into the air from the destruction of the buildings.

7. I'm sorry, I cannot agree.
That pay is .01% of their expenses.

Habitat for Humanity's CEO makes .04% of their expenses.

$450K is a great deal for a group that handles over 3 billion dollars annually.

Why don't you check the pay of a CEO of a public company that has $3B in revenues.

8. A public company is not a public charity...
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 10:42 AM by Flubadubya
It just seems the spirit of the thing, really.

Besides, CEOs of most public companies are making an exhorbitant salary in the first place, especially compared with what the average worker in their company makes.

10. And $450,000 a year would buy a lot of blankets, food, and water
Taking a half million dollar paycheck from a charity, when the people that charity is helping are, by and large, below the poverty line is damn near unethical.

But, that's only my opinion. The RC has done a lot of good, they're just not my charity of choice.

16. that is true, but the quality of person you would get for a whole lot less
money probably would not be as efficient at handling everything there is to handle to get everyone their blankets, food and water.

My point (for charities) was just that the percentage she is taking is much less than other charity CEOs.

There is a lot of dough flowing through there.

Disclosure: I tend to not donate money to the Red Cross either, (not sure I ever have, in fact) because they get a lot of press whereas others who are just as deserving do not.

15. yes, but you want to pay someone well for handling that much money.
And $450K isn't THAT much money.

It is a good amount, but I think for that job it is worth it.

9. I Got Your Back, Bob
I think you're on the money on this. That's small compensation for being CEO of an organization as big as the ARC. I with you that this is an unfair and unjustified shot at the Red Cross and their CEO.

12. I agree with you, Bob.
I work in the non profit world and the ARC is a great organization. They have jumped on this relief effort without waiting for the 'word' from the Feds. I commend them for that.

Is there bound to be a center that is not so well funded/operated? Certainly, people are people. On the whole, the ARC is a great, well run charity.

14. I agree with you
The Red Cross is a huge organization, and the administration of it certainly no easy task. And their overall effectiveness rating is very high.

13. they need to be replaced
I hear the American Red Cross commercials "You've got a friend" and "we'll be there" and I want to puke. People died of thirst, DIED because the nice white suburban ladies were afraid to bring supplies into the Superdome and Convention Center and get mud on their shoes. If all they do is help people once they are removed from the disaster, then other orgs can do it just as well and probably better. The International Red Cross brings teams into war zones, into scenes of genocide, but the American Red Cross was too skittish to enter New Orleans, a city in their own country for chrissakes, to help their own citizens. Clara Barton who founded the Red Cross walked in the bloody battlefields of Crimean War would hang her head in shame to see what has become of the "humanitarian" organization.
Marsha Evans CEO and Bonnie-McElveen-Hunter Chairman of American Red Cross are an embarrassment and disgrace to every nurse and every doctor, and every NGO in the United States.
