Why is FEMA willing to loot PETS? |
|
Let me be clear: in a case of human or pet I vote for rescuing the human (at least in most cases).
But here's a different perspective: Though their owners often don't feel this way, pets are PROPERTY. And the call to PROTECT PROPERTY in NO is inconsistent with forcing survivors to ABANDON their property.
By what right can rescue workers require anyone in NO to abandon an item of property (their pet) which, unlike a house or car or couch, CAN be safely taken with them?
Many of these people have lost every other thing they once owned. Would rescue workers make a survivor dump their last box of family photos in the toxic water? Would they make a man throw away his one suitcase of clothes? Would they make a woman abandon her legal and financial documents?
Pets are - like it or not - property that is being LOOTED from the survivors.

1. Good Morning America had a segment this morning |
|
about hurricane survivors being reunited with their pets.
Not a black face in the bunch. Gee, color me surprised that black people are still not getting services but white people are having their pets rescued.
(Sorry, I'd do just about anything for my animals and I'd be devastated if a disaster took them from me, but PEOPLE should come first and foremost. ALWAYS)

2. I'm not even that much of a pet person. But I do sincerely think |
|
people should not be forced to abandon a treasured possession that can easily be taken with them.
With all the talk about protecting property it's ironic to have rescue workers forcing people to leave their behind.
