Confessions of a former freeper
Hi there DU. I never thought I would actually be making a topic here but I'm going to post some of my experiences in the past year to show you how there still is hope that this country can turn around.

Some of my background: I was born and raised an evangelical Christian. My family has always been very active in the GOP. My dad even headed up our local chapter of the Christian Coalition back in the mid '90s. I've been to the Road to Victory conferences in both Washington and Atlanta. Basically, I was just about as right-wing and Republican as they came.

I was known during high school as the big Republican guy. I would go around preaching my words of wisdom of how wise a man Bush was and how just about everything he did was the right decision. I would get into heated arguments with my history teachers and I would tell them how Joe McCarthy and Nixon were misunderstood.

Last year, I proudly slapped a Bush/Cheney bumpersticker on the back of my car. I walked into the voting booth November 2nd and stuck it to John Kerry by voting for Bush. I had recently heard about some fringe website called Democratic Underground. I logged on that night laughing as all of you were crying and espousing what I thought were cockamamie conspiracy theories about voter fraud.

Then...it all started to change. I believe it was back in January that the thing about Armstrong Williams being on the government payroll started leaking out. I thought it was a joke or something by the liberal media. I did a little digging and found out that it was indeed true. Then I started to be disappointed with Bush going to his fancy balls for his big inaugural gala, while there were people dying in Iraq. Little by little, my faith started waning.

I kept coming to DU to see what I felt were the latest conspiracy theories about Bush. The Guckert/Gannon thing surprised me, but I still wasn't anti-Bush just yet. No, that didn't happen until the Downing Street Memo popped up. I felt betrayed and disgusted when I read it. When Congressman Walter Jones finally stood up to Bush and was relentlessly hounded around here in the Charlotte, NC area where I live (WBT has......interesting hosts. A Libertarian, then Rush Limbaugh, then Jason Lewis, then another Libertarian. Oh, another thing, be glad you don't live down here where you can hear Jason Lewis. He makes Rush Limbaugh look like a lefty in comparison) I finally had the cover to come out against the war and the president.

Ever since I made that major step, it seems like I've been against everything the Chimp has done. This has resulted in some painful moments between me and my family. They still support Bush, but thankfully had started blaming him in part for the pathetic response to Katrina.

So let me apologize for rambling. I just want you all to know that there is hope for you all. People CAN change their fundamental views on things when presented the right evidence. I did. I just wish I had done it earlier so I wouldn't feel like I have blood on my hands for voting for that monster.

73. KICKED: Welcome back to reality!
I know it is difficult to change what you believe. But consider it growth.

Just as all Republicans are not evil and all Dems are not saintly, you have chosen to address the great complexity of humanity objectively.

That is all that many of us ask of people, to be objective. To visualize the notion that people wish to corrupt the faith and values of those who sway to their side.

Kudos to you, young American!

10. Welcome to DU
I'm married to a Republican. He's a PK (preacher's kid). My prayer is to hear him say exactly what you had the courage to say here. This time last year our home was a war zone (and I was pregnant at the time. It was like living on the set of Crossfire 24/7).

You deserve praise for having the courage to come here (you have to have a thick skin to be here!) and admit where you felt you went wrong.

Just remember that this is a BIG TENT, and while you may find other progressive Christians here interested in peace and social justice, you'll also find secular atheists and agnostics. We may not all agree but we do try to respect each other.

Thanks for your courage.

I am quite sure they'll be disgusted by what they learn.

If they are the LEFT BEHIND types, they will be further disgusted to learn about the use of fundamentalism as a political tool via mindcontrol techniques gleaned from RevMoon. See Moon's longtime involvement with Tim LaHaye, Jerry Falwell, and many other religious "leaders" of the right.

btw...I'm in Charlotte. What part are you in?

I loved "A People's History of the United States." I read it when I was in college, and should pick it up again sometime. What is particularly strong about Zinn's book is that he uses so many first-hand sources.

"Lies My Teacher Told Me," by James W. Loewen, is also very worthwhile.

I do continue to have hope, but the difference between you and my RW mother is that you are willing to listen and look for the truth yourself.

She will not. No matter the facts in front of her and no matter how blatant it is, she will support bushco because he is 'christian'. In her eyes, when anyone criticizes bush, they are criticizing christianity. There are some that far gone. My hubby told me the other day to give up.

My In-laws, who voted for bush twice, after seeing what happened in the Gulf States want all of them impeached and kicked out of office. My father-in-law wants them jailed. They were huge bush fans up until katrina.

Hope remains.

300. It wasn't JUST a storm
It was the aftermath, the slow response. The non-response. Regardless of anything else, and there's some wacky stuff going on down there (even by the most parsimonious of standards this is obvious from what local authorities have said), the loss of those lives -- certainly the vast majority of deaths resulting from Katrina -- was in GW Bush's hands. Even if he was an innocent bystander, and his lack of action (and very much etc) proves that he wasn't, the buck stops at his desk. Well, it's supposed to...by default. The enormity of this crime along the Gulf coast and the fact that, this time, the mainstream news media let the mask slip, would be enough to get to anyone with a conscience.

And it sounds like our new comrade (no, really, we're not commies...really) was already there, despite the best efforts of an administration that cntrols most of what Americans see and hear. That's not an easy thing, making such a thorough paradigm shift, especially when it puts you at odds with not just your family but much of what you've believed in your life before.

Welcome to DU, Seen the light. You might have noticed that it can get crazy here and that we don't always agree on everything (just as well, I say) but, hey, that's what happens in a microcosmic melting pot. Have fun, learn, and teach... :hi:

Like Seen The Light said, dissatisfaction was already growing. It was the war. It was the stupidity. It was Halliburton. It was all of it.

I think the storm was the last straw because it is so huge, plus it underscores Bush's total neglect of domestic issues.

114. Being Republican is inconsistent with being Christian.
Jesus taught us that the most important Commandment is to "Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself." The Republicans, as we see in their theory and philosophy as well as in their practice in NO, in Iraq, after 9/11, in the tax cuts, simply do not follow Jesus's teaching.

Republicans put the original Ten Commandments, which I find relatively easy to follow, before the Commandment that Jesus taught us was the most important. Never have I heard Republicans ask to have this most important of the Commandments, which is central to both Jewish and Christian beliefs, displayed anywhere. Republicans would like to forget that Commandment. It would actually require them to open their hearts to other people, even those who disagree with them.

And, indeed, as we see in NO, Republicans do not attempt to carry out that most important Commandment in governing our country. Can you imagine what Jesus would say to us about how we are/have been treating the poor of New Orleans? I would not want to be George Bush on the judgment day he supposedly strongly believes in.

The sad thing is that many Democrats have been intimidated into betraying or denying the importance of Jesus's beloved Commandment by the "Bleeding Heart Liberal" label, the attack on Humanism and the lies about anyone who speaks against the Republican me-first-ism. I am a Unitarian, but I believe strongly in the teachings of Jesus, and especially in the admonition to "Love They Neighbor as Thyself."

Welcome to DU. We need your Christian voice. Don't be annoyed by people who seem to insult your religion. They are, as am I, offended by the hypocrisy, the misplaced emphasis, not by Jesus's morality and teachings.

I as a Christian and a democrat get so upset about all that. They think if you're a Christian your automatically a republican and you're only a Christian if you're anti-gay and against abortion and "pro-life". But yet they don't stand for anything that makes life. Look at their policies. *sigh* It's so frustrating how they've manipulated religion to get what they want politically and to make tons of money.

308. I remember about a year or two ago
seeing this segment on MSNBC and it was about a Christian cult. This girl was at college and away from home and met some people who appeared to share her faith. But as she got more into the group they showed this was a Christian cult. She could only talk to them and couldn't talk to outsiders about things they talked about etc, and they said she could only eat this or that etc and just wanted to control her. Luckily she still had contact to some people outside of the group and helped her get out. I was just baffled and will always remember that.

339. I wouldn't call them a cult at all. They were just extremely...
conservative and followed the Bible to the letter rather than by its spirit. They were also very controlling. It was more about keeping its members from sinning. I understand what they were trying to do, but it wasn't for me, and I think that it interferes with many people's relationship with God/the Universe (whatever one chooses to call that force outside ourselves); at least that's what it did for me. It was a terrible experience for me, but it really helped me to understand fundamentalist Christianity.

One of the things that bothered them the most was being perceived as a cult. I have to agree with them that they didn't fit into the definition of a cult per se.

I grew up somewhat apolitical/conservative/racist - no surprise in white, working class outer boro NYC, especially during the 80's and early 90's. I didn't really start developing a coherent political philosophy until I went to college, although I was always interested in history. In many ways, you're not letting a cult of personality get the better of you. You know that you have to apply the standards of right and righteousness to everybody, not just those you don't like. And when you do this, it is quite obvious that the Bush Administration (whatever we might think of Bush himself) is a monumental failure of governance. Welcome aboard, and great conversion narrative. Truly in the Christian tradition.

36. Welcome!
My mom voted Republican all her life until the impeachment of Clinton. Sometimes it takes a display of shocking venality or dishonesty to show the true face of something.

Now she watches John Stewart religiously.

My grandfather fought in WWII and won a battlefield commission and numerous medals. He voted Democratic every election of his life. He said it was the working man's party and he was always a working man.

You will find a lot of wacky folks here with a lot of wacky ideas, but you will also find respect, tolerance, and people with a keen nose for finding the truth, even if it is a truth we don't like.

Hopefully you will find friends here, too.

I know many people on "that side" actually believe that they are fighting for the best interests of the country. If we could just get them to take some time and honestly look at the facts, many would finally see the real, irreparable damage being done to the US.

We are up against a very powerful propaganda machine.

I was never raised with the religious aspect but I had the whole dems are going to take our guns crap and to this day still have a hardcore republican dad whom I now bicker with, but it's a big step my friend to come out and see the light.

One thing I have to tell you about is the fact that here at DU it's a HUGE tent and although I am unsure of just how far left or different your views are now, I have to tell you that many of the posts you will see at DU range from extremely intelligent to hilarious to very radical....perhaps even more radical than you feel. You may even find yourself being hounded from time to time for not being to the left of Fidel BUT you have to understand DU is a VERY diverse group and your thoughts and opinions will more than likely spark overall a positive response.

So just the little heads up, enjoy your stay at DU I am sure like mine it will be a long one!

78. Depends on what you're talking about
What got my parents so upset about the Katrina fiasco was Cafferty's awesome rant on CNN. That combined with Shepard Smith's reporting on the ground has made them...not too pleased with Bush's response.

If you're talking about Iraq, bring up the point that we're sending our troops over there to die in order to establish what might amount to an Islamic theocracy. That's affected my parents at least somewhat hearing that.

89. Oh, I've already gone down all of those roads
These are die-hard evangelical fundamentalist conservative Republicans, who are completely backwards in all of their thinking.

I send them all those articles that tell the truth, and they totally dismiss it. They have an amazing way of dismissing reality and facts.

I honestly don't get it, I can't understand how they can hold their positions.

As for Iraq, they think we should bomb the whole middle east and take it all over. I mean, that's the level we're talking about.

And, that all social programs should be completely eliminated, let the poor fend for themselves.

They refer to Dems as "nazis" -- now how in the world does that make sense??

These are intelligent people, too. That's what makes it so hard because I know that logic should win them over.

It's so hard (it's hard work!) talking to them.

The phone number is (202) 456-1111 or you can leave a message at (202) 456-1414. The hours are 9 to 5 EST, and its a big pain in the neck to do it because they are Very Busy, and you will be put on hold.

Then call your Senators. You can find their phone numbers at www.senate.gov and tell them you want him OUT. Then your Representative -- you'll need your 9-digit zip code, which you can get at www.usps.com/zip4/ -- who you can find at www.house.gov for the phone number.

Look, I'm glad you've "seen the light" but its time to DO SOMETHING to help make right what you helped screw up. Start with the phone calls. It'll make you feel better.

However, as I read your post, my eyes filled up with tears so I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say THANK YOU for your message of hope. I forgive you for supporting * although that is quite hard. I am grateful that you began to get both sides of the stories so that you could inform yourself and make very important decisions. I don't see how any human being, much less a "Christian" or a "Compassionate Conservative" can stand with Chimpy and his administration now. This colossal failure of the President to act like a President and to even act human is INEXCUSEABLE! Innocent Americans died and suffered due to his inaction. I saw no sense of urgency in him, no compassion, no concern, no angst. His comment to Pelosi, "what didn't go right?" is DANGEROUS! GOP Party loyalty, it seems to me, is loyal unto death; not their own deaths mind you but the deaths of innocent people. * and his administration have the blood of hundreds maybe even thousands of Americans on their hands as does anyone who stands with them. How could any human defend his incompetence? His indifference? NO!

Okay, so there's my rant. WELCOME to DU. Glad you are here. :hi:

to grow very weary - there is just so much to read. Since you are a former Republican who's eyes have been opened, maybe you can explain to me why the everyday, anything but rich Republicans support the tax cuts for the rich and at the same time support spending billions on the war? I just don't understand where they think all this money is coming from. My family is Republican and religious, and I can tell they do not support the war to free the Iraqis, that's for damn sure. Don't mean to welcome you by questioning you, but this is one aspect of Republicans that I just don't understand.

97. A few things
My parents love conservative talk radio. Well, who am I kidding, I even used to love conservative talk radio. The talking points that are delivered pretty effectively by people like Rush and Hannity have a powerful effect on people.

Also, something my mom told me in an argument we had over the war once was very telling. She said something to the effect of "Well, look on the bright side. (This was in reference to me talking about just how many people have died due to the war.) Maybe this means that Jesus is about to return." I don't know how you can combat that kind of thinking.

He doesn't care if we leave clean air and water for future generations because he doesn't think that there are going to be any! And what's even scarier, his Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, who's responsible for all this, shares his beliefs! And my friend, who was born in the Middle East, says that this explains the Bush* preoccupation with the Middle East: that's where it's going to happen and he wants to be there!
:scared:

And I can sympathize with your efforts to deal with your mother. It's much the same for me. My mother refuses to listen or believe a word I say because I don't watch "the news" like she does. And by "news," she means O'Reilly, Hannity, Rush and Scarborough. *sigh*:-(

314. I don't think Bush really believes in it
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 02:10 AM by FreedomAngel82
It makes me wonder since he lies all the time and lying is a big no-no with Christians: or is supposed to be. Plus, we're supposed to give to the poor and help the meek. Well, we should want to anyways. About the end of the world you should remind these people what Jesus said. It will come like a thief in the night. In other words: we don't know! And I'd prefer what Christ says since I am a Christian and follow him. From my watching of Bush he uses the Christian religion and the fundamentalist base to gain votes and power. It's all they have. Other wise why haven't they gone with any agendas on the "religious right" groups?

who I do trust as a source. However, your point is well-taken. Not only is lying an anathema to a devout Christian, but, as the Congressional Black Caucus asked, regarding his lack of compassion to hurricane victims, where is his professed Christianity in all of this?

You know, today's Neocons are not Republicans. My parents are Republicans, not neocons. The Republican party has been hijacked by a bunch of madmen bent on domination. They lie to their supporters, and their supporters eagerly believe the lies. To do otherwise might make one question what is right and what it wrong with this country and with the Republican Party. My parents came to see the truth and voted for John Kerry. I'm not angry at you because you didn't. I welcome you wholeheartedly back to reality. Now please help us do something to take our country back from the madmen.

Good to see you here :) :hi:

Sad to hear that Jones was hounded in the area you live in, every time I saw him on TV speaking against the war in Iraq it looked like he was about to burst into tears. I'm sure attending all those funerals took a toll on him. It was good to see someone speaking out against this war, even if it was a Republican. I have a new respect for Mr. "Freedom Fries" Jones for that...

I live in SC and have witnessed some SCers give Lindsay Graham a hard time for his criticism of the war and for speaking out against torture...yes TORTURE!

Anyway, thanks for sharing your story and welcome :)

I came to DU to see just how "hateful" you guys really were. But over the last year, a lot of things have rubbed me the wrong way from Washington, and I've gotten to the point that I just can't stand the chimp in chief anymore. I voted for him twice, and was already losing faith in him by the second election, but sorry, Kerry didn't move me enough to jump ship (I was close). I voted for his father once, and abstained the second time because I didn't think he deserved the office (foreshadowing, I guess).

The tide turned with the overwhelming evidence that he trumped up the war. Even the most die-hard Republicans couldn't convincingly defend him anymore. Now I see how callous he is about my state's devastation.

BUT, my Dem governor (Kathleen Blanco) ought to resign, and I still don't like Michael Moore.

But I can't call myself a Republican anymore. The party, like New Orleans, has sunk and needs re-building.

Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 05:20 PM by Lecky
They are becoming more and more turned off to the GOP since the Pat Robertson types and Neocons (AKA warmongering imperialists) have hijacked their party and this nation.

We don't talk much about Bush anymore...I can just see the shame and embarrassment in their faces and I don't want to be all "I told you so!". This past year has been a real eye opener for them and they even admitted that the war in Iraq was about oil (duh!). At least they are making progress lol.

It's really strange because they hold many liberal viewpoints but have always voted Republican...out of habit I guess. I think this may change in the future though, I still have hope :)

I'm old enough to remember when the Republican Party stood for different things than what I did, but they did care about the country. They weren't about the business of destroying the country so that the "priviledged" few could have it all at the expense of everyone else, which this particular bunch in power is doing so fast it's hard to believe. They weren't about hate. Some good, even great presidents were Republicans: Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, even Eisenhower.

That was what I always cherished so deeply about this country, that people with all different shades of values, philosophies, and preferences had a right and were at respected for their similarities as well as their differences. We could collaborate and work together solving problems because there were all these points of view -- but always at bottom was love and respect for our Constitution, our liberty and justice was for all. That's what made us great. You say the Republican party needs re-building. The Democratic party could use some of that as well, but at least they are not (at least most of them) guilty of condoning and in some cases participating in criminal, cruel, murderous, destructive behaviors. Literally destroying this country city by city.

Those who rule the Republican Party now are not Americans. They are fascists. Think of Bush holding hands and kissing his Saudi friends -- people who are in a country that is ruled by despots, people from a country that had most of the 9/11 terrorists! Shocking. And now this bunch of fascists is actually selling our country out to China and Saudi Arabia.

Someday maybe you can go back to that Party because it will become an American party again. A party of human beings with hearts and souls.

I've never voted for a Republican and never will, but the two party system is essential to the health of the country. We all have to fight these criminals and someday maybe we will defeat them and take our country back for the people. Then, if you go back, we'll agree to disagree (I love Michael Moore : - ) ) again but we will both be able to hold up our heads with pride instead of living in shame and horror, and move back into our rightful place in the world as a country that once again, for all our differences, speaks with a single voice to say:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

No doubt, there are many very emotional expressions because we are personally affected by the policies of this administration and we are very passionate about our own philosopies. However, at least some level of common respect is demanded: exactly the way a real democracy should operate.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. You've had some painful moments and it can't have been easy, especially to have come so far in such a short time. Kudos to you for having the courage to face up to the truth. Not everyone can do that, since it's much easier to believe what we're being told and a lot more comfortable.:-(

I was never RW, but just politically apathetic. I always voted, mostly for Democrats, but had no involvement and little enthusiasm. I did, however, know that Bush* was bad news and the election of 2000 angered me, a lot, for the first time. But it took 9/11 to really wake me up, forced me to make a real effort to go out and actively search for the truth, sort of as you have. And what I've found out was worse than I ever imagined. It angered me and scared me witless. But I do know the truth now, and I'm not giving up. And I'm not shutting up, either. I'll share what I've learned with pretty much anyone who's not running in the other direction, LOL! And the one thing I'm sure of is that I've learned enough, in a large part from DU, that I may be angry and scared, but I'm sure never going to be blindsided by the lies ever again.:grr:

Again, Seen the light, thank you for your great post. And a particularly warm welcome to DU, from me to you!

99. I had to welcome you first before reading your story.
My own rebellion came about rather slowly until the year 2000 when a number of things happened that challenged my remaining right-wing thinking. Just before the invasion of Iraq, I did some research and discovered then that Powell had lied to the UN and that there were no WMDs. In 2002, I officially bailed on the Republican Party.

As for feeling there is blood on your hands, I felt the same way because I voted for Bush in 2000. I wasn't exactly thrilled with him either before or after my vote, but I did vote for him. I have tried to make up for my bad decision by learning the truth and becoming more active in politics. I have a feeling you are about to do the same. You are most welcome...and I feel your pain about family. I feel my family are so mired in their beliefs they will never change. Perhaps they will pleasantly surprise me.

WELCOME! Let's get our country back!!!

It's hard to believe that so many believe as true the surreal world in which they still live. A land where individual responsibility supposedly reigns, yet every problem is blamed on leftists, and every inconsistancy dismissed due to a left-wing press. And, none of it is true.

On the other side they think they are real patriots. You've done your own research. You are, now, a real patriot.

The real work begins. Good luck.

i voted for reagan twice and bush sr. once..

the repukes relentless and hate inspired pursuit of passing the "defense of marriage act" is what pushed me over the edge. although clinton signed it under immense political pressure, it was the repukes who showed their true colors in writing it and pushing during an election year in order to demonize gays.. i realized at that time that it was the democrats who were the true "big tent" party and the party who actually cares about ALL americans.. not just the white, rich, heterosexual and christian.. but all of us.

god bless america and god bless you!

Most of the local elections are decided in the Republican primaries. My friend, who's also a long-time DUer, went off on me the other day because I ran into the town supervisor, who I happen to know, and didn't tell the guy off, because he's a Republican. *sigh* The only reason NY is blue is because of NYC.:-(

Where in NC? I've spent a lot of time there because my grandmother retired to Black Mountain, just outside of Asheville. Beautiful country!:D

122. I must admit, I am a former Freeper as well..
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 05:08 PM by LibertyLou
Actually, one of the original ones from WAY back in 1998. It was a different place then, sure , very anti-Clinton to be sure, but what attracted me was the freedom angle...the anti-corruption angle. Ruby Ridge, Waco, Mena, the 'Body Count,' the coming NWO, were all commented upon in depth.

I could write a great synopsis of what the board was like, and how it was instrumental in bringing about Clinton's impeachment with assistance from Matt Drudge, Lucianne Goldberg, etc. Hell, I even participated in protesting against the war in Kosovo because it seemed like it was a 'Wag the Dog' type scenario. But all that changes apparently when it's a Republican doing the bombing. And I am not so blinded by political affiliation to see through the hypocrisy.

I am of the opinion that Karl Rove realized and thus utilized FR as a type of brownshirt activism...and I won't go into detail about Jim Robinson and the $$ factor... It was used. All the scare tactics about troops in the streets, FEMA camps, endless corruption, etc, have now come true...under a Republican president. We are in fact, less safe, less free, poorer, and more divided by $$$ than we were before. Bush is a disaster of the first order. It's the 'gilded age' of the 'robber barons' all over. The corruption and propaganda is astonishing and breathtaking in its scope and audacity. If even 10% of what Bush has actually done was attempted by Clinton, the storms and howls of protest would have been endless. But it's still being used by Rove even today...as in, how do you think that he knew that there was a small crowd of anti-anti-war protesters to go out in his truck to meet?

I'll never visit the place again.

They are a bunch of rabid dogs right now, turning on and eating their own. And to all the freepers reading this, I hope you too will see the light as well.

Your correct about this chimp in that he has divided this world, he has divided this country and now he is dividing Families. 123. I was a Reagan Republican...
... right up until 1986. At first, I found the charges the left leveled against Reagan to be mean-spirited and often wrong. Then catsup became a vegetable. Iran-Contra became a fact. I started having my doubts. Because see, my real motivation was what was best for all of America - I believed (and still believe a few things he stood for were basically correct) that his solutions to problems were the right solutions.

It sure couldn't be selfishness, I made barely 30K at the time.

But slowly you start to realize that Republicans are really just in it for themselves and their rich friends - they don't give a shit about America, and what is best for most Americans.

I'm kind of ashamed of it all, but then everyone has to come around to their truth in their own time. It took me too long, but better late than never. And part of the reason I have a different view of how to fight against the Reps is that I basically understand them more than many here do(IMHO), because I was one. "understand" is fortunately not the same as "agree with".

Welcome to DU. Even liberals who I think are fringe crazies are at least on the side of the common man and not the elite. Extremism in the defense of what is good and what is right is no vice.

It takes a big person to admit this, especially being raised by strong republican parents. Actually, the republican party was not that bad, years ago. During my working days, I worked in the courts for both of the parties, and found them to be very down to earth and good people.
Even though I have always been on the other side, I had a respect for the party. That was before Bush, Jr. came upon the scene. He has really changed the entire landscape for the worse.
Being able to change one's mind is truly an asset. :toast:

126. I converted October 30th, 2004...
My sociology professor did a lecture on foreign policies of the US in South America (Chile, for example) and how we would set up gov'ts who would "allow" us to build their infrastructure in exchange for resources. The light clicked on right then and there. I took the Bush-Cheney sticker off of my van and voted for Kerry a few days later.

It is possible to change, so dont' give up on people. I started this life as an indoctrinated Mormon kid (genuinely nice, I think, but VERY sheltered and misguided) and am now an atheist liberal (both require critical thinking skills).

128. Your conversion can be summed up by one quote...
I did a little digging and found out that it was indeed true.
That right there explains why you changed and others haven't. You actually took the time to check and see if those things were true.
Most of us here have nothing against Republicans(other than our simple opposing views on certain political ideas). Just Bush and the people like him who are willing to rape and pillage for their own benefit.
The reason so many people support Bush is because they simply don't question him. They don't see if the claims about his misdeeds are true. Why? Partly because a good deal of them refuse to believe that a president of the united states could do such things. I know at least one person personally who is in that camp. The rest... well, I have no clue. :) Herd thinking? Perhaps. Refusal to believe that a 'good christian man' could do such things? Probably for a good portion of them.

where nobody really has to "earn" anything from anyone (unless they want to, of course). It is good to see all of the people who questioned, and then came to their own conclusions. I believe most thinking people WILL vote for Dems, because they truly do care about all of us.

I never voted for a republican, but that's because I was raised dem - I never cared about politics at all until the shrub was selected, and began ruining my country. When we begin to question and learn, it's a wonderful thing, although a lot of times it's much more comfortable NOT to think. I'm just glad more people are beginning to question.

I don't think you should apologize for your vote. What's most important is the lessons you learned, and can take forward. Welcome to the light side! :)

I myself was a Reagan Republican in the 80's... then switched to the Democratic Party (mainly due to disgust with Iran-Contra and the religious right taking over the party), then became Independent (in the mid 90's, neither party was appealing to me).

I have to tell you... I considered myself a centrist before Bush took over... but seeing the policies of this administration has forced me to see the dangers of not only incompetence and sinister behavior, but also the danger of a good idea (capitalism) taken to extremes or used as a misapplied label for what is really "big corporate cronyism" (really the military-industrial complex, repackaged). Capitalism is supposed to be a "free market", but when big corporations are favored like they are, I have to say it makes me lost on the "free market" concept, because it doesn't really exist. Bush is so bad he makes me *feel* like a leftist.

I think what we're seeing forming in the country right now is a new political bond... between liberals, moderates and traditional conservatives... to form a kind of "rational alliance" movement to save the republic. Even if we disagree on particular policies, we commonly understand we have a dangerous cabal running things now, and that they have to be dealt with. And I think we all also agree that even with a limited government, the hurricane survivors should have been promptly fed and evacuated right after knowledge of the levees breaching--that is, no matter how you cut it, a responsibility of government.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for My sake.

Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in Heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.

I've never been too much of a fan of people "infiltrating" other websites. If people do it, I guess that's fine, it's just not something I would be that good at doing.

. . .for those of us who have no actual interest in reading what we consider fiction? There may be some valuable lessons there, but i don't own a bible and never will.

179. Matthew 25:34-46...
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 05:43 PM by Sapphire Blue
Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, `Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

For I hungered, and ye gave Me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took Me in;

naked, and ye clothed Me; I was sick, and ye visited Me; I was in prison, and ye came unto Me.'

Then shall the righteous answer Him, saying, `Lord, when saw we Thee hungering and fed Thee, or thirsty and gave Thee drink?

When saw we Thee a stranger and took Thee in, or naked and clothed Thee?

Or when saw we Thee sick, or in prison, and came unto Thee?'

And the King shall answer and say unto them, `Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.'

"Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, `Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For I hungered, and ye gave Me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink;

I was a stranger, and ye took Me not in; naked, and ye clothed Me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited Me not.'

Then shall they also answer Him, saying, `Lord, when saw we Thee hungering or athirst or a stranger, or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister unto Thee?'

Then shall He answer them, saying, `Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me.'

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal."

"A new commandment I give unto you: that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples: if ye have love one for another."

Of all the lessons in the bible, I think Matthew 25:40 (And the King shall answer and say unto them, `Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.') & John 13:34-35 are the most important.

318. Yes
Earlier in the year Howard Dean was on the "Daily Show". He said it perfectly. In the Bible the word "poor" is mentioned 3,000 times and he also said one of the greatest commandments is "love one another" and "love thy neighbors" and Dean said we are told to love thy neighbors and we don't get to choose our neighbors. The freepers have so much hatred in them. *sigh* It's really sad and hurts.

188. independent research is the key and....
Rush, O'Reilly, Bush et al depend on most people NOT doing it.

The most chilling thing about these Bush years is a difference with 1984 (the book). In that novel, the protagonist's job is snipping people out of history books and newspapers. The Bushies have figured out that isn't necessary. They could change their story of what happened in the past, and they didn't need to change the archives because they knew most people wouldn't look.

Someone once said sometimes remembering is the most powerful act of resistance, but I think research is. Never take information for granted, even when you get it from people you agree with.

AAR is great and they have many different styles of people as well. To get you started you might want to check out Al Franken and then work on up. Mike Malloy is my favorite! He comes on at 10pm-1am east. He's kind of hard core though but definitley tells you the truth and would never lie to you. I also suggest Guy James, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann and Bernie Ward. There are so many great progressive talk shows. But since you're new check out Al Franken from 12-3pm est on AAR (airamericaradio.com) and Stephanie Miller at http://www.stephaniemiller.com You have to sign up () to listen to her show but you can download the show archives for free. I love the show and hopefully you'll learn to like it too. She's like you and a lot of us here. She grew up with republican parents (I think her dad once was a VP choice) and ended up liberal.

202. Hello and Welcome.
I think you will find many of us "reformed" types here, and also many different types of progressives.

I am a registered Libertarian who voted Democrat for the first time last November. I was initially moderately supportive of the war in Iraq but became disenchanted with Bush after Abu Ghraib and finding out (as you did) about some of the "funny business" with the media and newscasts that were actually government propaganda.

I work with statistics on a daily basis, particularly from the viewpoint of application to the social sciences, so after I started hearing all the rumors after Nov 2nd about vote fraud, I decided to check some of that stuff out myself. What I found convinced me that something was very strange in quite a few states, and I now firmly believe that some kind of fraud happened in places. But anyway, researching vote fraud led me to DU, and I decided to stay.

Although I don't subscribe to all the Democratic causes out there, I am very anti-Bush, so I usually feel quite at home here even among the peace activists and anti-gun people.

And DU is also the main source of my news - the media is untrustworthy much of the time, if you haven't figured that out by now.

I welcome you to DU, and I hope that you get as much out of it as I have.

:)

Republicans SHOULD be SERIOUSLY concerned by things like the Armstrong Williams affair.

Using government tax dollars to BRIBE and BUY "fake" reporters and planting "fake" reporters like Jeff Gannon to make fake commentary and propaganda like Nazi and fascist regimes should be of concern to any freedom loving American even if you buy into the whole Republican philosophies on taxes, foreigh policy etc.

It should bother them. Freeper lurkers, if you are reading, it should bother you.

Try a few books from your local library, Jim Hightower and Molly Ivans both have written a few books about Bush and his legacy, and they are chock full of info you would not believe. The rabbit hole is deep.. very deep.

239. We are a motley crew, and not always cooperative or
congenial. But almost to a fault our DU family members are dedicated to sorting the truth from the bullshit and will call each other on untruths and inconsistencies. So if you find yourself in the middle of a flame war somewhere in the future (and these can be triggered by anything from Hillary vs Kerry to how much pepper to put in your potroast) don't give it much thought. Just remember that we are family and if you find yourself in trouble, these same folks will go up against the wall for you.

So Welcome. And p.s. - you do know about the initiation after your 1000th. post, right? Hmmm, you may want to start looking now for a rubber chicken and a plastic raincoat. Ooops. I've said too much already.

240. Wow--that took major guts--Welcome to DU, Seen the light!
I certainly appreciate your honesty, and your ability to write what must have been very difficult for you.

We are sometimes a tad rowdy around here--make yourself at home, don't let the passion with which some argue scare you away. We don't always agree about everything, but we are a caring, compassionate group.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

There's so many degrees of progressiveness on this board. Some are very moderate, some way more liberal. You'll find your place in time. Take it all in small doses--we don't want to overwhelm you. :hi:

I've got some Republicans in my family, too. Don't take it personally if they don't all 'change' they way you may hope. Allow them to be who they are--but let them know you still care about them. In the grand scheme of things, that's what's most important. Not who people vote for...

Oh, and make sure they know we haven't brainwashed you, or put a curse on you...(haha)...we are sometimes accused of that.

It sounds like you are young and intelligent and interested in the world around you. That's a great way to be! Given your age, I don't you should feel too bad for supporting *. It takes a few years to see what the world is really about, and even longer if you start with a problematic family ideology. Don't stop thinking and observing. Good for you for being able to change your worldview as you learn and grow. That kind of adaptability is rare, and it will serve you well.

And I am truly sorry. I thought I was putting morals back into the White House, but boy was I wrong. I was scared before the Iraq war , and after the WMDs were non-existent, I stopped drinking the kool-aid. The BULL SHIT landing on the aircraft carrier sealed my hatred towards Bush. My opposition hit it's peak during his SOTU speech where he choose to discuss drugs in Baseball and writing bigotry into the Constitution against gay people! I fucking lost it during this speech, my wife turned it off on me, I was so livid. Young American Men and Women are dieing!!! yet we need to discuss adding bigotry into the constitution and steroids in fucking baseball when we have so many kids dieing FOR NOT A GOD MAN THING. America I am so sorry for voting for Bush in 2000.

Then when I got older my views changed and I became a history buff and learned about everything and thanks to history and Michael Moore and other films I'm a democrat. The corporate media hasn't made it very easy for ANYONE to figure out what's really been going on.

My own biggest issues are:

Election reform
Media reform
Improving public education

I can live with Republicans winning the Presidency and Congress, IF they really won and IF the people were reasonably informed of the material FACTS and sufficiently educated to understand them.

If we have those three things, we will be able to deal with other problems adequately. But if we don't have those things, we won't be able to deal with anything adequately, and our "democracy" will be a sham.

There is a great forum here on the 2004 election with a lot of very carefully researched information. I suggest you check it out. If we don't get our election system "un-rigged", there is no hope for ANY of us, reformed or not.

The country's at a turning point now, and the alternatives couldn't be more opposite. Everything we can do to push for the truth and for exposure of the corruption and crimes of these monsters makes us that much more likely to tip toward, as you say, the light.

And your area can't be impossibly pro Bush - you are there, you are surrounded by the relentless propaganda and the pressure to conform....and yet here you are.

We need ALL of us to save and heal this country. I'm not a Christian, but I know that Jesus would weep and rage at what has been done in his name by these people. Surely there are people of genuine faith who will rediscover themselves when they turn away from the lying hypocrites and toward causes that are meant to bring people together and make the world better. Surely it's easier to follow Jesus' teachings when a person can work for love and tolerance and world peace.

It CAN be done. Thank you for your story, and - again - welcome!!!

Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 02:00 AM by tblue37
appealing or believable? Was it that you were raised among right wingers and never thought to question received wisdom? I can tell from your writing that you are intelligent and have a better than average education. (Might I ask how old you are?) I am always trying to figure out how smart people can be fooled for so long. I have a few RW friends, and I can't figure them out.

Do you think the pervasiveness of the RW media and their constant harping on the old lie about the liberal press was a major factor in maintaining your belief system for so long? Did you ever consider the disconnect between what Jesus actually stood for and wha the RW, fudnamentalist Christians do and say?

I don't mean to interrogate you, but I am so curious.

BTW, welcome, welcome, welcome to DU and to the reality-based community. You have made my day!

You sought the truth, and that changes people. I've changed many of my views over time, usually because of 'epiphanies' from talking to other people.

Welcome to DU!

"It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority." -Benjamin Franklin

"Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error." - Thomas Jefferson

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt

335. Good.
Now keep your mind open and stick around. Any party is dangerous when they tell you how to think rather than allowing you to do so for yourself. I personally believe the Democratic party is far, far the lesser in that regard. We are a diverse group who think for ourselves and that lack of "everything is black and white... wrong or right" mentality can make things more complex, but in the end, I think it will ultimately show that we are the ones who truly love this country.

Stick around. Peace. :)

Here is what my mother in law had never considered--who is PAYING for the war in Iraq? Who is buying our debt? Who is going to OWN us, and already OWNS us due to our dependence on them to finance the Iraq War.

The CHINESE!!

That'll get 'em. Bet they never thought of it.

341. OK, I have a confession to make, too
I've never been a conservative, or right of center or even a moderate.

I was born in 1966 and even when I was 10-11 years old and there was a big national push for ERA (the Equal Rights Amendment), I could not understand why anybody would be opposed to equal rights for women, and that attitude helped shaped my views over these last 30 years. (Egads, I'm going to be 40 in 15 months!!!)

Another thing that helped me with my dislike of Republicans happened even earlier - the Watergate hearings on TV. I used to come home from school to watch cartoons on TV in the afternoon... however, because of Nixon, my cartoons were interrupted by Watergate hearings, so I blamed him for it!!

346. Yet another ex-GOP/Fundie welcomes you!
Paradigm shifts can be scary as hell, but you'll feel better afterward. I finally jumped ship late last August, the GOP convention and RW radio (Rush and local hostess Vicki McKenna in Madison) started to become painful. Scales were falling, and I wasn't liking what I saw at all. I was already mad at them for the Patridiot Act, and the stream of bovine excreta was becoming unbearable. I had not yet registered to vote since moving here, so I got the forms online, registered as a Democrat, and mailed 'em in. Voted straight donkey. First time I had ever voted for a Dem in a national election. It felt rebellious and subversive. I loved it. :D

Here's hoping more and more see the light. Many Dem politicians aren't perfect (and a handful are icky, viz. Zell Miller) but the overall ideals are IMHO more consonant with the teachings of Jesus than the unregulated-capitalism dogma of the modern GOP. Thanks for sharing, and welcome aboard!

366. Thank you so much for this post!
I am choked up and touched right now reading this. So much of the results of the actions of this administration are so horrific and knowing about them is so painful. So many Bush supporters are so passionate and locked into their beliefs that I've always considered them lost causes. The fact that you were once so passionate and then changed really, really has given me hope that it's possible for others too. You shouldn't feel guilty though.

You had ideals that you believed in. You had a country that you loved and cared about. You wanted to believe your leaders. Your only mistake was believing lies and trusting people who should be telling the truth. The whole media system is part of the lies and it is so very hard to get accurate information. I applaud the part of you that stayed open to something that opposed your belief system. I applaud the part of you that kept pursuing the truth though it must have been so painful to let the certainty that you had go. I applaud the part of you that can admit making a judgement mistake. I applaud the part of you that has evolved and grown for the better. You and the people who believe in the Bush lies are not the enemy but just another kind of victim. Reality really really sucks right now and you should be proud that you are facing it with strength and your eyes open. Thanks. And spread the word.

Your post gives me hope. Thank you so much for sharing your feelings. I have some born again fundamentalists in my Family and I know deep down they are wonderful people. None of them would intentionally hurt anyone. That doesn't make it any easier for me to see my own Family blinded by this administrations propaganda and the right wing Christian agenda.

Anyway... You made my day as we all try to come to grips with where this country is really heading under this administration. Hopefully, one by one others will also change, so we can get our country back.

it took a lot of courage to do it. My advice, keep your eyes open and try to find a source for the information given you - even on here.

I think if I had done that, I wouldn't have voted so much as a Republican early on in my life either. I think there are many more reformed Republicans on this site than you might think!

I will always regret voting for a non-career politician, an a-political high school wrestling coach from Yorkville, Illinois. A man I thought would bring a fresh perspective to the DC scene. Wrong. This was many years ago and now if this meglomaniac is Speaker of the House and cares little for anyone not in his private circle or circle wannabes.

Problem is - we will forgive you fairly easy. Forgiving yourself is the hard thing.

381. Good to have you here.
I'm a neighbor - over in East Tennessee - and I completely understand your history and background, even though I was raised by fairly liberal parents (one liberal and a the other a Reagan Democrat).

I used to be an Independent. I still have never registered as a Democrat since it's not required to vote in primaries in my state. I like Fred Thompson and John McCain and Jimmy Duncan. I've always liked more Dems than Republicans, but I could understand the anti-tax and spend sentiment that spread throughout the South in 1994 (even though I thought Frist was the anti-Christ).

I voted for McCain over Bush in the 2000 primaries because I thought Bush was an imbicle, even then. I wanted Gore, but could have tolerated and even, at times, appreciated McCain. In short, I wouldn't have hated McCain.

Since Bush's selection, I've become more and more liberal - a pull against the push of neoconservatism. The PNAC makes my blood boil and the holier-than-thou theocrats make the true Christian in me shudder.

I'm glad you've come over to learn more. We have to take our country back - and that means from elistist Dems, too. Those in both parties who sell out the poor and middle-class to the corporations to line their own pockets.

American is going down the crapper because of these people - and the more people, like yourself, who see this light, the easier it will be to put America back on track for Americans again.

383. And David Brock wrote a 2nd book ..
very enlightening, called 'The Republican Noise Machine."

And one cannot help but be moved by the info. in 'Hijacking Catastrophe.'

Buy the DVD.

I am a former Republican. Ironically, I was a feminist, believing in equal opportunity for women when I came of age in the late 70's. I thought that I could be a hot-shot, well-off powerful woman, working in aerospace. I happened to listen closely to the rumors of where those arms were being shipped.

It was in 1991 that I saw the light (about 14 years ago); becoming a social worker changed things for me. Working with the poor and mentally ill made me realize how much I had been lied to all of the preceeding years about how things really worked.

And, after becoming an internet regular, I confirmed that the United States had been shipping critical weapons, such as Stinger missiles, to Bin Laden and Hussein. That rings true.

Thanks for your story, Seen-the-Light. I've become a very dedicated progressive. I certainly do not believe in fiscal irresponsibility. But engaging in an illegal, immoral and unnecessary invasion of another sovereign nation, in contravention to the U.N.'s directive, creating a huge deficit, and hence selling us to the Chinese is not Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or conservative. It is the result of twisted NeoCon thinking, replete with greed.

There may be something you've neglected to mention about why you decided to unburden yourself here, drawing a whopping 386 posts from my fellow DUers. Maybe you are too reluctant to post something so personal within this community. However, a lot of what we post here at DU is very personal. Many members of this website are sensitive, caring human beings. We won't judge you if you want to disclose it, so please, once again, tell us about how the Bush Administration has not worked for you, in a personal sense.
