Breaking CNN -- mailed checks to replace debit cards. (No addresses!!!)
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 04:39 PM by DeepModem Mom
Even Wolf pointed out the problem with this -- these people are homeless. If I heard correctly, 8,000 more debit cards will be given out, and then everyone else will have to sign up to get $2,000 checks in the mail.

(On edit: For a contrasting local effort, please see this post about a city's generosity and the undying spirit of the evacuees it is sheltering -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4700167)

5. glad you caught yourself.
All we need is kevin Costner going into NOLA and being shot at by FEMA sharpshooters. I never thought much of him as an actor, but I would not want him shot trying to deliver mail.

9. So was this really just a
to get the soundbite out that they were actually giving something to the people in need? Give out a few and then switch to something where it won't work and the people won't get it. Meanwhile the first message is what people heard.

10. The checks will get 'returned to sender' stamped by P.O>
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 04:47 PM by doublethink
non deliverable, resident not at address anymore, no forwarding address left, and the checks will expire in 90 days back in some FEMA file cabinet. Guess they're just trying to save taxpayer money. Excuse me while I SCREAM NOW :grr: ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGgg !!!!!!!!!
on edit: to add .... yea a lot of this money will now just 'disappear' like the billions they can't account for in Iraq, and never get to where it is needed. Our country is run by criminals.

12. One would think that no time has been given to a disaster and
the logistics of mitigating the financialhardship. I'll bet we'll see lots of corruption in that $52BB giveaway - it will mostly end up in the pockets of private Republican contractor-campaign contributors.

13. You people don't think NEARLY dirty enough to be Republicans...
...they get to use the SHELTER adress as their home address thereby tying them to the shelters till "the check that's in the mail" arrives.Should keep them in line for a month or so...

Three biggest lies....I'll pull out before anything happens
The check is in the mail....And...
I'm from the government and I'm here to help you

14. "Mr. J. Smith, 3rd Pile of Rubble on Left....
about 200' from where the big tree used to be, New Orleans, LA"

If FEMA were organized and is keeping track of who went where (did they take names when people checked into the various centers?) they might be able to get mail to them. Right?

20. The Bush magic
Send the checks out
When not cashed - (returned to sender) -- that's it.

It's like the old joke- A wealthy man who believed in "channeling' dies - and leaves instructions to his doctor, minister, and lawyer to deposit $5000 each in his casket. He promises to "bless" them upon his arrival at his eternal reward. The doctor puts $5000 cash in the casket, the the minister puts $5000 in the casket. The lawyer puts an envelope in the casket. The doctor and minister both ask him "What was in the envelope?" The lawyer replies - "My personal check for $5000.00."
