Does CNN _have_ to run Cialis ads while all these people are dying?
Too much...

It's been how many days? how many THOUSANDS dead already?

Can't they put their ad time to some better use? Give some other, more disaster-oriented businesses or organizations some ad time?

Are you from NO with ED? Now you've got help ... from Cialis

They're making me vomit in my own mouth!

1. The one I saw last night that blew my mind...

Was for some little SUV and how everybody needed to go buy one to "make your escape," or something like that. Ordinarily it might not be such a bad commercial, but in the middle of the news about people being trapped in NO it seemed insensitive in the extreme.

These are agency buys...they are contracted.
There isn't anything you can do--they were contracted to run way before Hurricane Katrina.

14. Are there some FEMA forms they can fill out? ;)
I know but I do think there is some leeway when there is the biggest disaster in the entire 229 years of American history... :)

13. It is true ... but there are times they go without any advertising, so
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 10:06 PM by FULL_METAL_HAT
it would seem to be that they have some control over the commercial messages.

It turns out this is actually an interesting thing to look at ...
this page has cost and revenue info for CNN for 2002 http://www.stateofthenewsmedia.org/chartland.asp?id=369&ct=col&dir=&sort=&col1_box=1&col2_box=1&col3_box=1

CNN (millions / year)
Programming Costs $221
Subscriber Revenue $385.7
Net Ad Revenue $411

which is a little more manageable by the minute (524160 minutes / year):

$421.63 / minute Total costs
$735.84 / minute "subscriber revenues"
$784.11 / minute "net ad revenues"

The subscriber revenue comes directly from cable operators (about 37 cents / subscriber / month) at $735.84 per minute more than covers the total costs of $421.63 per minute leaves an actual profit of $314.21 per minute without a single commercial advertisement. That's almost $165 million a year in profit. Add the advertising revenue of $411 million per year on top of base profit, brings up their fully advertised profit at $576 million profit

That's 2002, so its safe to say costs haven't changed much, nor subscriber revenue.

So maybe CNN has a little wiggle room it would seem.

Interesting too is in comparison, Halliburton had last quarter profits of $392 million derived from a gross revenue of $5,163 million subtracting total costs of $4,556 million. In other words their profit was just about 8% of revenue, while CNN'S profit is actually 72% .. that's pretty rich with CNN's annual profit at $575 million (in 2002) and Halliburton's at only about 3 times that.

I'm glad you brought it up! :)

on edit here's the Halliburton financial info: http://yahoo.brand.edgar-online.com/fetchFilingFrameset.aspx?FilingID=3819519&Type=HTML

18. That's true. They didn't do advertising for days after 911.
But I guess that's because 911 made * look good. (It was lost on me, but most of the country bought it._

19. I know I know ... I'm just saying while there are still people being saved
Some extra numbers to look at things:

Number of minutes since Katrina struck:

HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF

Landfall 29 Aug, 2005 7:10 am

10 Days
16 Hours
9 Minutes
42 Seconds

or about 15,000 minutes ... Baton Rouge got 25,000 body bags ... if that's the case, that more than one death / minute

At that rate I'd simply wish to believe that CNN would consider that the gravity of the topic they are covering 24/7 and step up to the plate with a little more creativity in their revenue/advertising balance and content.

There is serious talk of capping oil/gas profits, what's wrong with CNN choosing to moderate their message during this exceptional time?

And hey I'm not asking for feminine hygiene products either ... do something innovative instead of being, um, RIGID! ;)
