From Alabama east to Florida, the shrimp are still OK.
In a few weeks, they won't be. Not after the toxic spew from NO.

If you live on the gulf coast, buy them now.

Miz t. was contacted by a shrimper we know today.
2 bucks a pound for mediums.
That's about half price from before Katrina.
And last week we got large-to-jumbo for $3.

Mediums aren't the "shrimp-on-the-barbie" size, but they're great for gumbos, salads, casseroles, jambalaya, etouffee, "popcorn",etc.

Shrimping has been a dying industry down here in coastal Alabama for a few years. Mainly from over-fishing.

I think this could be the end of it.

2. I've done it.

When I was younger.
And then I figured up the time, effort (hard work!), and money it took.
I don't shrimp anymore.

But we live on the gulf coast, where they're relatively cheap.
Down here, shrimpers are lining up private buyers, rather than sell to processors.
They make a little more, by eliminating the middlemen, and we get a little better price than from the retail markets.

4. Believe-it-or-not, we get shrimp from China and Viet Nam.

Right down here at the Winn-Dixie in Foley, Alabama.
Frozen, and cheaper than the local product.
I've never bought any.
