Apparently most of the animals who have been found thus far are in surprisingly good condition. So, hopefully it's not too late!

46. This is the best news I've heard all day
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 01:40 AM by Carla in Ca
My husband and I watched KO earlier. Did you see the guy with the 3 big dogs? A reporter asked him what he would say if they said he had to go and leave his dogs behind. His answer..
"Then shoot me, I'm not leaving without my dogs."

ALL members of a family must be rescued...together. The emails I sent out begged them to understand that leaving pets behind adds to their trauma, adds to their losses. This is great, great news. You guys are the best!

On edit: I'm sending $100 to The Humane Society and the ASPCA tomorrow, in Jeans name.

51. Yes!
They're family too. My dog was my best friend when he was here. I miss him all the time and know how these people feel. I remember earlier this week on the local news a woman was reunited with her little kitties. You could see all the love and relief.

54. Exactly!
We are a family of three, not just two if we are ever asked to make a choice. I'm so glad they have realized how the separation just leads to more suffering.
It's bad enough losing them from old age, isn't it? As difficult as it is to lose your best friend, the love you shared was something so special. Hugs to you.

10. I wish there were a way to rescue this man's dogs:
If he left them "a month's worth of food," they're probably still alive, and probably still locked in that room:

How hard would it be for a GOVERNMENT AGENCY to look up "David Webster, New Orleans" and find this man's house?

"David Webster, New Orleans." It's NOT a search for a needle in a haystack. They still have time to rescue these animals.

20. There's already been an internet frenzy to try to find the address
for David Webster. The picture is from the San Antonio News and here is a response from the managing editor (from Nola.com)

"This photo has created quite a response from the animal-aid community. Rescue organizations have been contacted and notified of the location. We've been told the dogs will be rescued.

Thanks for your message.

11. Look, it's as good as it can get for now
I signed the petition and I sent an email. I feel as if I've made a little bit of difference (I donated money, too, and will donate more.) Animals have ways of staying alive that we don't - they'll eat or drink whatever's there. I have a sweet dog (who looks kind of like the one in the picture) who was a stray for who knows how long? She took care of herself. So it gives me some hope. I think some thanks is owing to the news organizations that have emphasized the plight of the animals, too.

in particular. I spent a week watching coverage with my evacuated mother who had to leave a semi-feral cat at home. Each day the animal coverage would faithfully come on all channels, local and national. We are truly a nation of animal lovers.

the animals.
Humane Society is there to provide care and shelter once they are rescued. What is needed is the manpower the rescue them from where they have been stranded.
There are more and more volunteers. Firemen and NG are finally getting involved as well, and some shelters are finally allowing people to take their pets with them..but sadly not all of them are.

I took a break to go get some Ben&Jerry's ice cream. This was the first night in a week that I felt some hope and was able to relax a bit.

We should all give ourselves a small pat on the back. Instead of sitting idly by we all did what we could from where we were.

So congratulate yourselves and prepare for a "Katrina Dogs & Cats" adoption near you!

http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/NEWS/NEWS.htm

UPDATE: 4:03pm PST Authorities have informed our rescue team that they have three days to rescue all dogs before they start shooting them. They believe that dogs are eating dead bodies to stay alive and need to eliminate them. We are outraged. Animal rescue groups were not allowed into the water until last Tuesday. To give us just another 72 hours to get a job, of biblical proportions done, is ludicrous. We are doing our best to beg for more time. We would ask you to call or write to someone but frankly, the lines of communications are so poor, we have no clue where you can begin. Because our team is on the ground, they have direct contact with law enforcement. If we have to, we'll work 'under the radar' to get the job done.

Which f***ing "authorities" are these?
Would anyone with any more information or suggestions, PLEASE post them.

Could someone please help me in sending this message to the Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin

Many people locally and nationally have been trying to reach him by phone and by email to report issues needing his attention, and we are being blocked from getting through.

Thank you very much,
xxxxxxx

Mr. Mayor,

We have just witnessed your officers this evening of 9/8, on the Bill O'Reilly show, tackle an old lady to the ground in order to evacuate her as she was resisting to go. We have had many reports as well that officers are shooting dogs and refusing to allow victims to evacuate with their animals.

We implore you to take action against these incidents of abuse and we will be reporting this consistently to all of the news and governmental agencies until we hear that it has been addressed by the city.

Please take note of the professional, compassionate and dignified acts of kindness that the Navy and Coast Guard is showing to the residents of your city and their animal family members and ensure that the officers under your control act in the same manner.

Remember, the world is watching and has captured images of your officers actions. These images can do great harm to the future of New Orleans and it's elected officials.
