Uh, why are they "wanding" children at the shelters?

Am watching Paula Zahn right now. Her focus is on the children affected by Katrina. Just before the break, they showed an NG woman using a wand on a little girl about 5. The NG woman was very nice to the little girl, but I'm wondering why they are doing this. She's a kid, not Osama bin Laden!

here in new orleans there was a gang war going on & yes it is not unknown for drugs, weapons, other contraband to be smuggled even in a baby's diapers

nor is it unknown for a child to get hold of an older brother's weapon

you'd be the first to be up in arms if the shelters were not properly secured & kids got shot

every time a bush gets in office, the drugs get flowing, and the crime rate goes to hell in this city

the shelters should be properly secured & i'm not sure i give one tiny crap what someone sitting safely in seattle thinks abt it, it won't be you that gets perforated by a bullet

I am not an ignoramous. I am well aware of the kinds of problems you speak of. Seattle is not hermetically sealed from the realities of the not-so-nice side of life, especially where I live. You seem to be accusing me of making assumptions, but in fact, I think you are.

This wanding was happening in the middle of the shelter, not at the door when the girl was coming in. That's why it did not seem to make sense to me.

Someone might stuff a knife or something in a kid's pocket. It's for the children's safety in the shelters as much as anyone else's.
