shortcomings, which is good since there are lots of questions out there. But overall Dateline is SHOWING (not editorializing)that FEMA and the WHITE HOUSE failed MISERABLY.

Talking right now about FEMA and a "turf battle."

This is good, good, good....Dateline has a HUGE audience, I believe, among mainstreamers.

They are on the ground, talking to the people that were relegated to the Superdome and convention center. "I'm coming, I'm coming... you ain't coming, ain't nobody coming."

FEMA told them to hang on for 48-60 hours and "we'll come get you."

-Canadian search and rescue team got to St. Bernard parish first.

-FEMA workers seized diesel fuel that Jefferson parish had purchased themselves.

-FEMA became an obstruction. FEMA took down communications antenna. We have an explanation now. In trying to put up their own antenna, FEMA disconnected the local one.

-"Where was FEMA?"

35. 100s of disaster management professionals have left the agency (FEMA).
Sheriff of Jefferson county rates state's response as a C+

Stone asks mayor of NO if things could have been done better. Who could have done better? The mayor says everyone, including himself.

"I could have done things better," Mayor Nagin. Stone asks him what he could have done. "Screamed louder," he says.

This is the second time he's said something to that effect. I wonder what he means by that. Was he saying things and not getting the right high-level people to listen to him?

42. What went wrong?
Boards on the window
Mail by the door
What would anybody leave so quickly for?
Ophelia
Where have you gone?

The old neighborhood just ain't the same
Nobody knows just what became of
Ophelia
Tell me, what went wrong

Was it somethin' that somebody said?
Mama, I know we broke the rules
Was somebody up against the law?
Honey, you know I'd die for you

Ashes of laughter
The ghost is clear
Why do the best things always disappear
Like Ophelia
Please darken my door

Was it somethin' that somebody said?
Honey, you know we broke the rules
Wu somebody up against the law?
Honey, you know I'd die for you

They got your number
Scared and runnin'
But I'm still waitin' for the second comin'
Of Ophelia
Come back home

46. My overall assessment of this:
Very good. Pretty fair. There were experts, including a former high-level official under Clinton critiquing the federal response to Katrina.

I thought Mayor Nagin came out pretty well. They showed the view of the school buses underwater, but as the program progressed, it became increasingly clear that a lack of school buses for evacuation was not a major contributing factor in this disaster. It was the lack of FOOD AND WATER, primarily, followed by NG troops to help keep law and order.

That sheriff of Jefferson county was very impressive and had a very "tell it like it is" manner. He made an interesting point regarding local responsibility: that FEMA told them to have enough supplies and be able to hold things together for 48-60 hours. He said they did. Seems to me like all the parishes (including Orleans) held things together as well as could be expected in the immediate wake of the hurricane. They did what was expected of them and they held up their end of the bargain. But that "calvary" everyone keeps talking about showed up a day late and a dollar short.

However, Blanco did not come out looking well in this at all. If anything, she was like the elephant in the room that no one wants to point out. I get the sense that many other local officials were disappointed in her response, but like polite Southerners, will not dishonor their governor in public. There was a serious failure in communication between local parishes and the state. Someone on the program mentioned (I forgot who) that the state is supposed to be the bridge/coordinator between the local officials and the feds. It sounds like they don't feel as if Blanco did the best she could have.

I think Blanco's political future is in serious jeopardy. She didn't appear on the program (of course, no federal representatives would either), which does not look good. She is going to have to get with her people and develop a strong defense of her actions. If it's the fault of Bush and the Feds, she needs to say that. If she erred somewhere, she needs to do like Nagin did (and Landrieu, to a certain extent) and admit she could have done some things better.

Oh, the Canadians beat the American government responding to an American national disaster.

Pathetic.

50. There was some mention of a turf war and they did show that
FEMA intentionally blocked supplies. I think it was mostly attributed to "red tape," but I thought they did a good job presenting the utter ridiculousness of it all. I may have missed something on the governor, though.

They did, however, have on a guy from Jefferson Parrish who mentioned how FEMA was obstructing, including dismantling their communications tower and replacing it w/FEMA's.

The first hour was mostly survival stories and reuniting, and that kind of stuff.

53. I don't think they really delved into that topic.
Though they did mention that Blanco, as governor, was in charge of the NG and that there were a few NG troops already in NOLA before the crisis.

The former high-level FEMA professional under Clinton did say that there was a failure of preparation. She said food and supplies should have been delivered and on the ground before the hurricane struck.
