This quote by Jefferson has gotten me through the Bush nightmare

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles."

Thomas Jefferson, 1798

Asking us not to give up faith. Yes, it did help. My patience is wearing more than a bit thin, anyway, though.

22. Yes, we plan to work locally in Oregon in 2006.
I think our Republican Senator Gordon Smith will be up for re-election, but we're waiting until after the holidays to get geared up for what's going down...

My husband worked for Al Gore, then for Howard Dean, then for John Kerry. We were devastated when the Democrats lost. What a nightmare!

25. yeah, jefferson
the midwife of the states rights movement. i recollect that the context of his quote had to do with his loss to Adams for the Presidency after Washington retired. He spent his four years undermining Adams, whos volatile style didn't need much help.

read the recent pulitzer prize winner, Founding Brothers. good inside look at how the inside game immediately after the establishment of a federal government, played by the patriots of the revolution, set the stage for the civil war; you can even see the bush administrations rooted in the story.

shheesh quote. successful president he was. probably also a disengenuous, pathological self deceiver and racial hypocrite.

but the boy could write. it's a shame there weren't videos back then, because i'd've paid big bucks to see ADams argue a point.

30. in several ways...
the establishment of the dichotomy between states rights versus a stronger federal role occurred literally in the falling out of Adams and Jefferson.

this multi-generational conversation has become a dialogue with political legs several time during the history of our country; it underscores the whole wave of tax-cutting initiaives that moved east from california in the seventies and eighties. Jeffersons greatesat fear was that a strong federal government would usurpe the role of the local government; adams saw that a strong federal government could create a national economy and ultimately affect the quality of life all across the governemt. This unresolved set of issues remains so because the founding brothers wouldn't touch the issue of slavery, and Hamilton had quicky set about erecting a treasury had the potential to closely align the government with the corporate interests and financial institutions that were an anathema to the southerners, who idn't think it was entlemany to count their dollars nor to stint on spending them for parties, horses, linens, and feeding slaves.

the irony is, the bushies make believe they are the deeply conservative states rights, and have used their influence to pull back the kind of reasonable corp-orate oversite that would then enable them to rob the world blind... silvedrado, harken, etc,.

somewhere out there in ther lobby of the heavenly Hilton during a convention of dead presidents, adams and jefferson arew crying in their beers and mutting what have we wrought. we should never have disagreed, we should have left a single uniform point of view.

43. Sorry, As Someone Who Supports Witches and
Wiccans I don't like the reference. Jefferson lived in an era when witches were demonized. What we have today are the real demons, so I would characterized this as "the reign of demons."
