Katrina's environmental toll
I'm concerned about the effects of Katrina on our environment. I'm watching all of that brown goo being pumped through those huge pipes. Where is it going? What's in it? What's the environmental impact?

I've heard that the Superdome is now deemed a biohazard. Who's going to clean that up? Where will all of the refuse go? It can't be safe.

I'm frettin'.

1. They're tearing down the Superdome...
but no idea where any of that stuff is going.

I've been worrying about that myself.

9. Yes, but what I've heard about the stuff inside
it has to go somewhere. Where? What will be done to/with it? I mean, biohazard.

10. I know.
They'll probably bury it out in Nevada or something.

2. but the EPA said it was OKAY to pump all that toxic gumbo back--as to the
hazards, they are only speculating that it will basically kill most of the gulf, for starters.

4. No.
There are no good choices. That is the bottom line about this.

I hope that you are all right. And safe.

5. If FEMA still had its act together, as it did in the 1990s under
President Clinton, and the EPA still protected the environment instead of enabling polluters, there would be, first of all, strengthened levees, and second, a plan to clean the water, at least somewhat, before pumping it back into Pontchatrain and the Gulf.

This is yet another disaster caused directly by Bush and his inept minions.

8. I don't want this to come across as callous,
and forgive me if it does, but since NO is still being evacuated anyway, couldn't the flood goo have been left a bit to clean it up before it gets pumped into the Gulf of Mexico? That can't be good for gulf's ecosystem.
