Did anyone else's parents say, "Stop that, you don't HATE anybody."? |
|
Mine did, and it always stuck with me. No matter how much I disliked what someone did, I never descended into hatred for them.
Sorry Mom and Dad...but I really hate Bush and the neocons. I mean, a hatred that causes measurable physiological changes in my body.
My parents raised me to be a Christian...a REAL Christian like the kind described in the book of Matthew. They told me not to hate.
I can't help it. I feel like I'm in Germany and people are telling me not to hate Hitler. Sometimes hate is good.
Sometimes hate is necessary.

3. Maybe this passage will help clear things up? |
|
Luke 14:26 (King James Version)
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

This one always bothered me a lot too, at least until the last week or so. Then I remembered that a lot of the early christians were really writing about politics, even though most of it had to be written in code.
I believe that Jesus is not referring to our biological parents but rather that Father and Mother represent the government. The brothers and sisters are the ones who work for them. When you look at that passage in the light of a political statement it makes a bit more sense and I think it speaks to what we are facing now.
Yes, it is okay to hate injustice, just as long as you don't let that hate control and dominate your being.

17. Take into account the translation from |
|
Aramaic to Greek to Latin to German to English and a period of 2000 years from when that was first written. Something was lost in translation.

Same here. It stuck with me. When on occasion I do say I hate some individual, the degree of disgust I have with that person has flown off the charts, and I'm generally in a non-rational mode of thought.
On a related note, my grandmother once heard me telling someone to "eat me." She warned me never to say that again. Someone might just take me up on it.
That stuck with me too.

7. Nahh, my parents were bitter, racist assholes... |
|
They pretty much either hate or sneered at everybody who wasn't exactly like them. They wouldn't mind me hating anybody, they would just mind WHO I hate right now.

9. "Love your enemies" doesn't mean "you should have no enemies" -- |
|
it means rather that in your unflinching battle against them you must not lose your fundamental human decency ...

"If you hate someone, you're killing them in your heart." That's what my parents told me.
Well I hate Bush. I hate Bush, and I hate his whole family. I've never hated anyone like this before.
The way I see it, Bush owes me money. I think I should be compensated for pain and suffering. We all should.

These greedy, thoughtless people give me a gut wrenching yuk every time I hear them, just work against them, the more you piss them off the worse they get. Then others see how awful they are.

15. Mine stressed that 'Hate' was a very strong word, not to be taken lightly. |

They suggested that we might dislike spinach, loath our math teacher, be annoyed with the kid next door, resent the rich kid up the block, but hate was something we couldn't understand well until we had some life experience under our belts. They explained words lose real meaning when used inappropriately or as hyperbole.
If we used the word, it was well contemplated and soundly justified, and yes, it came later in our lives.
My folks did not have much to give and certainly had their personal shortcomings, but they did pretty well with values, responsibilities and boundaries.
Thanks, Mom, Dad, for what you managed to get right, remarkable when considered with their life experiences.
