Are you watching the "Shelter From The Storm" benefit concert?
Neil Young singing now. His voice seems clearer than some years past. Just beautiful.

35. likewise
Dr. John performance.. and Green Day's song, "Wake me up when September ends" interpersed with images of people who suffered from the hurricane also brought tears to my eyes.

It sure sounds like he says niggers. But he says it really low and it's not clear. Why would he say midgets, doesn't make sense.

31. FWIW, it came across on closed captioning as "midgets."
I didn't have the volume up so I really can't say what it sounded like. Closed captioning is often a bit off -- and quite often downright hilarious. For instance, the past week or so, if someone said the phrase "Department of Homeland Security", it showed up on CC as "department of homicide" or, more often, just "homicide." Pretty goddamned appropriate if you ask me.

16. a large portion of it was censored
I watched the earlier broadcast, and they did more camera censoring this time!!!!!!

It was so moving!! I saw the anger and rage in his face. Also, he threw the black power fist after he finished. Great performance, too bad we only got to see/hear a portion of it.

18. Lyrics to the song - "Jesus Walks"
these are lyics as found on the net. Whether its what he sang tonight, that was muted, I dunno....

We need to recruit all the soldiers
All of God's soldiers
We at war
We at war with society ,with racism, terrosism, and most of all we at war wit ourselves
(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the Devil's trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me) with me with me with me

You know what the Midwest is?
Young & Restless
Where restless might snatch yo necklace
And next these might jack yo Lexus
Somebody tell these who Kanye West is
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death is
Top floor, the view alone will leave you breathless
Uhhhh!
Try to catch it
Uhhhh!
It's kinda hard
Getting choked by the detectives yeah yeah now check the method
They be asking us questions, harassin', arrest us
Saying "We eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast."
Huh? Ya'll eat pieces of shit? What's the basis?
We ain't going nowhere but got suits and cases
A trunk full of coke, rental car from Avis
My momma used to say only Jesus can save us
Well momma, I know I act a fool
But I'll be gone till November I got packs to move, I Hope

(Jesus Walk)
God show me the way because the Devil's tryna to break me down
(Jesus Walk) with me)
The only thing that I pray is that me feet don't fail me now
(Jesus Walk)
And I don't think there is nothing I can do now ta, right my wrongs
(Jesus Walk with me)
I wanna talk to God but I'm afraid because we ain't spoke in so long

(Jesus Walk)
God show me the way because the Devil's tryna to break me down
(Jesus Walk with me)
The only thing that I pray is that me feet don't fail me now
(Jesus Walk)
And I don't think there is nothing I can do now to right my wrongs
(Jesus Walk)
I want to talk to God but I'm afraid because we ain't spoke in so long.

To the hustlas, killas, murderas, drug dealas even tha strippers jesus walks with them
To the victims of Welfare for we living in hell here, hell yeah, jesus walks with them
Now hear ye hear ye want to see Thee more clearly
I know He hear me when my feet get weary
Cuz we're the almost nearly extinct
We rappers is role models, we rap we don't think
I ain't here to argue about his facial features
Or here to convert atheists into believers
I'm just trying to say the way school need teachers
The way Kathy Lee needed Regis, that's the way I need Jesus
So here go my single dawg radio needs this
They say you can rap-about-anything except for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, video tapes
But if I talk about God my record won't get played, Huh?
Well if this take away from my spins
Which will probably take away from my ends
and i hope it take away from my sins
and bring the day that I dream about
Next time I'm in the club everybody screamin out

(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the devil's tryna break me down
(Jesus Walks)
The only thing that I pray is that my feet don't fail me now

36. Oh WOW. Thanks for sharing the lyrics. I really appreciate it.
The song is SO POWERFUL. In fact, I heard it on the radio some time ago, like NPR or Democracy Now or something like that. It gave me goose bumps then and it still does. When I heard it then, I didn't know who Kanye West was. I have an immense amount of respect for him now. I am a white person but Kanye is right. * doesn't care about Black people. (I love that song too). Thanks again.

22. Now compare this
Here are a few of the changes that were notable because they were not censored:

" Well Momma, I know I act a fool, but a flood came now we've got to move"

~and~

"I can only imagine (pause) I can only imagine if I couldn't talk to my mother, if I didn't know where my mother was, if I didn't know where my family was"

"If I had to, if I had to lose my home, if I had to stay in the Superdome, if I lost where I stayed..."

25. Dr. John
Usually so exuberant and now so sad.

It looks like his nephew died and some of his family are missing:
http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/dr%20john%20loses%20nephew%20in%20katrina

And from him in this article, referring to the way the wetlands were allowed to disappear:
http://www.edmontonsun.com/Entertainment/Music/2005/09/08/1207122-sun.html
"It makes me think of what my friend Rev. Goat just told me, 'Let me say this before it goes any further. New Orleans didn't die of natural causes, she was murdered.' "

It actually came to me just a bit ago. It was stuck in the back of my mind. I recognized his voice immediately.

That's so sad about his nephew. I hope he can locate the other missing family members.
