Hurricane Ophelia -- heads up in the Carolinas!
Meteorologists with NOAA and the National Weather Service are warning of the increasing possibility that Ophelia will loop back and take aim for the Carolinas, possibly as a cat 2 (or even Cat 3) storm by mid-week.

Keep an eye on weather updates over the weekend and PREPARE. It's obvious that WE'RE ON OUR OWN in these emergency situations so don't wait. Check your evac plan, make sure pets are taken care of, and check on elderly friends and relatives.

If you need to find a hotel that allows pets, here are some sites: http://www.letsgopets.com/?src_aid=Glgp and http://www.petswelcome.com/

Anyway, thought I'd spread the word so those in Ophelia's path can start preparing.

5. What's the topography in that part of SC?
I assume it's pretty flat, but is it flood-prone? And what of the barrier islands? Highly populated?

14. Low. Called "the low country" in fact in that part of the state.
Poor. Much of it is very rural.

28. Charleston, like NO, is below sea level
not as far below as New Orleans, but far enough below that if it happens to rain during high tide, the greater Downtown Area gets about 3-5 inches of standing water in the streets.

The romans had a better sewage system than modern Charleston does.

yikes. I grew up there, 99% of my family lives there....better get on the phone and tell them to get the fuuuuuk out

more weather control? :tinfoilhat:

if only weather forecasting were an exact science. Most times the weather geek is lucky to get the sunset/sunrise, temp and date right. Forget about rain, snow, drought, hurricanes, in advance for more than a day. May as well flip coins.

9. I would think that flooding might be a greater concern...
... especially in the coastal areas of the Carolinas. There are also many barrier islands that are quite vulnerable.

29. We spent some time there after Hugo
when two months had passed and all the debris was still sitting in front of the house and no one could tell us when it would be picked up. Needed something to lift the depression.

Went to happy hour at the Pirate's House. :)

Boards on the window
Mail by the door
What would anybody leave so quickly for?
Ophelia
Where have you gone?

The old neighborhood just ain't the same
Nobody knows just what became of
Ophelia
Tell me, what went wrong

Was it somethin' that somebody said?

Mama, I know we broke the rules

Was somebody up against the law?

Honey, you know I'd die for you

Ashes of laughter

The ghost is clear
Why do the best things always disappear
Like Ophelia
Please darken my door

Was it somethin' that somebody said?
Honey, you know we broke the rules
Wu somebody up against the law?
Honey, you know I'd die for you

They got your number
Scared and runnin'
But I'm still waitin' for the second comin'
Of Ophelia
Come back home

12. I'm in NC, and we aren't out of the running on this
although it looks like a Charleston area hit.

Flood-prone and low down there--I think they even call it the "low country" and there are lots of poor folks--black, brown, and every hue down there.

Ever heard of the "Gullah" people? http://www.co.beaufort.sc.us/bftlib/gullah.htm#Background:

13. god versus bush
If i were Al quaida I would have someone on tape proclaiming that the work of Hurricane katrina was Allah's will. Their god is just stronger than ours. this would of course prompt bush, who relies so heavily on his close personal contact with God, to rethink his plan.
possibly he would encourage Americans then to fight against the terrorists.
(M think he will try to reploy the whole StarWars nonense to 'take out" a major storm system threatening our country?)
Bush would have us all praying like mad- maybe send them a dust storm, or something.

One of those jerks came out and said that Katrina was indeed Allah's punishment, or will, or whatever.

26. thank you
it is about us having a voice- i really feel there is so much money- too much really in the top end, that having us small democrats & small republicans attacking eachother is the will of the fatcats. We, the people, need jobs in this country. i am a new yorker too, and have been a teacher in the NYC public school system. i hear a lot of folks complain about the families of the kids, the kids themselves etc. Well, 50 - 80 years ago American business needed an educated American worker and the schools regularly turned out kids who could read & write. now, everything is made in countries like China (anyone seen our balance of payments lately?? yeouch!!) by kids for a dollar a day or less. There is no need for an educated American public. in fact the powers that be would rather these kids from poorer families not vote. Your kids teacher, or your stockbroker- who is more important to the society? who gets paid more, you know our values are kind of screwed up.
there are a lot more poor & disenfranchised people in this country than rich & powerful. if they voted, our governement would look a lot different. I think it is rampant Greed that has wrecKed things for us. Capitalism was supposed to work because jobs would be created by no limit on upward weath. Strange, i see that now a company will fire people in the thousands (can anyone say GM- they just cut 25,000 workers) and their stock price goes up!!!
We, the people need to be able to protect and defend our right to have a job. Having an underclass of people means the wages are driven down, as seen recently by bush revoking the bacon act (i believe it is called this). We are in this together- we are one world- i really believe this

18. Not too worried...
Unless it's a category 4-5 storm...

We get hurricane scares every year so you get in the habit of not getting too anxious about these things.

Sooner or later a hurricane will hit again, but we will get through it just like we have the ones before. I've only experienced one big hurricane - Hugo (cat 4), about 15 years ago.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIASPFAT1+shtml/100854.shtml?

Looks as if the latest posted strike probabilities put landfall somewhere between Charleston, SC and Wilmington, NC. (Path was revised slightly northward)

Luckily I am in Columbia SC, but I hate driving to work..etc in bad weather. This storm eerily reminds me of Hugo, when I was a teen. I was living 40 mi. from Charleston then, which happens to be my hometown. We got got a lot of Hugo. Hopefully, Ophelia will die out before coming our way. :scared:

On Edit: Just wishful thinking.
