Louisiana and the government. Remember Huey P. Long. Didn't think so. He was a damn good governor in a time when my 85 year old mother grew up. She said he helped them with books for school. He CARED about the poor to the point he bit off the ear of one who criticized how he ran the government. Sure he liked to party and did so in NEW ORLEANS, but he gave a damn about the little people.

As a lifelong resident of this very awesome and cultural state, I--no, WE --resent those who have come from their brassy high rise studios to come do a story of the "poor and oppressed". Give me and those who have lived this a FUCKING BREAK.

George Bush knows NOTHING about Louisiana--except the blackouts he had during his drunken nights in the Quarter. No this incompetent "pResiden" and his dumb asses are CLUELESS 'cause not only did they not have to worry about being poor, they reaped the benefit of the beauty and culture of an awesome city only to throw it to the wayside in it's misery.

Give me--no US--a fucking break. Louisiana has survived much. New Orleans WILL--REPEAT REBUILD and kick ass like never before. America NEEDS New Orleans.

Bush on the other hand...well, 3 years can't come fast enough.

for those of us who have lived there all our lives, it's not about "what you like" cause there's so much to like about NO. The diversity and culture is what is withstanding.

12. I have been there

only a few times ... partying with a friend of mine who lives there. We went to college together. These have been short trips, tantalizing introductions to the place. It has .... texture.

I have thought of moving there, but it is not a good place for a programmer to find work. (Looked into it once.) The people there have a whole different perspective on life and things, and it is one which I find attractive. And, so, in that sense, I would like to know it better ... let something of the place and the people into me.

6. And Another Thing...

I know that there were lots of poor people in NO. I've also heard a lot of interviews with people, many from the 9th ward, who want it to be known that they had college degrees and owned their houses. So just to let y'all know, now there's at least one Missourian/Californian who knows the 9th ward had a lot of educated homeowners! (not that I doubted it, but it was nice to hear from them, too.)

And something I've always known, even though I've just been a visitor - Louisiana IS an awesome state, and there's a LOT more to NO than a big, drunken party (beignets come to mind immediately!).

14. Emotions are running high these days

especially for those of us who have lived in this state most of our lives. The hurt is really tough. To watch Dick Cheney and others who just are coming in for a photo op makes our blood boil.

But then, the photo ops are nothing new--until now. Now the photo ops take on a whole new dimension.

The press has done a good job in many cases. There are a few who try and run down and destroy any journalist doing their job. If I read that into your post I am sorry.

The stories to come include talk of the "public good" and "trillions spend on a War on Terror that will only save thousands while good programs will save more people than that". So it is important that journalists continue to write and talk about the issues facing the country. Katrina brings up a whole host of those.

New Orleans "without the magic of New Orleans" is just another city.
There is something special about the city as it was. The people make up the magic. The diversity.
If they try to make it into something it's not, who is going to go?
I can think of a special night once...we flew into New Orleans just to eat breakfast at Brennans. We strolled through the streets--and enjoyed the magic of the city. No other city has that.

15. I think what hits home to me the most is the

culture and diversity. I was born and raised in Louisiana and went to La. Tech. I met so many people from south Louisiana and spent many Mardis Gras, jazz festivals, and just hanging out. I had a few "loves" from NO and remember how much the city brought that feeling of excitement alive when I was "in love."

I love the Farmer's Market and stopping in the quarter to have a bloody mary at the court of two sisters.

God, it's hard...I just don't think people get it...
