Like Canada. A country that is democratic and liberal in nature--a country that takes care of its own. It would be the perfect time to move since I'd no longer have a home or any business ties in the states.

His girlfriend wants to settle there when she finishes school. Her family is from Canada and she has lots of relatives there.

Both my son and his girlfriend are young kids in their 20s who are completely disillusioned with the USA. It just breaks my heart.

Vancouver is so wonderful, I was just there on Sunday night, and I really thought about it.
However, you need a car, a job, a home, how would you just start over? Plus, it has to be very cold there in the winter.
But, if you had the means, it would be a great choice, anywhere in Canada....I love Montreal as well. But without anything? What would you do? Hitchhike and hope for the help of strangers?
If you have a home already, cherish it, and work from point A to getting out of an intolerable situation. I fear the next 3 years as well.

I live in Portland, OR and you don't need a car to live here, public transportation is great. I've never used public transport in Vancouver but I would be willing to bet it's very good so you probably wouldn't need a car. Vancouver is a little colder than Portland in the winter but it's not bad at all.

As for a job and a place to live, you'd have to get that anywhere you ended up. I am going to move to British Columbia soon.

36. I was only there overnight, and went into Richmond Hills from the hotel.

I went by cab, which was a ten dollar ride both ways. I did see some buses but I am unaware of the frequency. (I would not have gone by cab, but it was the only place I could see a physician--I had a wound I sustained a couple of days earlier that needed attention)
But I was thoroughly impressed with everything.....it is a good place to start over. Plus, the air was fresh and clean, something I am not used to ---since I have mostly resided and worked in the Eastern portion of the US. The doctor and hospital staff were superb and everyone I spoke to seemed to be processing with a charged up brain. Very refreshing experience. I think you will like it , too.

I live in Oakland now, so I'm not in the wilderness where I am. I do have dreams of moving to the country some day.

I'm not making any definite plans, so I haven't given climate, etc. a lot of serious thought. I will say that I prefer cold weather to heat, though. As much as I think parts of the South are splendid, you'd never get me there in the summer.

Texas- A whole 'nuther country I agree but, well, not 'nuther enough.
Great Britain- Just another U.S. state but I wouldn't mind going there if they seceded.
Quebec- I LOVE Quebec but I speak nary a word of French.
France, most of continental Europe OK with me. I like the way everybody likes to talk politics. Europe is like virtual DU.

The only things that keep me here are my house, my hometown (Oaktown, Barbara Lee Country), and my beloved employer. If I lost my job, I'd have to sell my house, and I couldn't afford Oakland anymore. So, if I only lost my job, I'd head for Canada.

To legally emigrate to a country, there are criteria that you must "meet", and being homeless and and having nothing might make you an undesireable immigrant to the receiving country..

This is precisely the problem that Mexicans have and why they sneak in.

I remember a time when people could get here by being sponsored by someone already here, and that sponsoring family/church/company have to file some pretty extensive paperwork to PROVE that the people coming would and could be completely taken care of by them..

And she was very smart. She made me promise I would never give up our apartment we grew up in. her very words were:

"In case a war breaks out, and things get so bad (in the US) you have a place to go to."

Believe me, I think of her words often. And I am constantly doing the pro and con thing in my mind. Here (so far) I have a job, but lots of debt (house included)

But what is holding me more than anything are my pets. I know how those poor people felt that didn't want to part with their critters. I will not part with mine. At least here I have huge yards and fences.
