"The War At Home" - Racism?
I'm watching this frankly horribly, horrible sitcom FOX has wedged between Simpsons and Family Guy.

The dad is uncomfortable with his daughter dating a black guy, who is apparantly doing so for the purpose of pissing off her parents. He finds out his wife has "been with" black men before and he's somewhat upset. It's not a huge plot issue, but it kind of sticks out. That and his paranoia over his son being potentially gay.

Well... what crap is this? Why is the racial issue even an issue? This isn't addressed in an Archie Bunker way or crap like that, it's just taken that it's normal to be frightened and freaked by the prospect of your children dating outside of your race.

1. How is it different than Archie Bunker?
(other than not being funny)

6. Ugh, at the end of the show it's even worse.
Despite finding out that the black man who's dating (being used by) his daughter is an excellent student, he freaking celebrates that they're not actually going out. Which they are.

I wouldn't mind if this actually had an Archie Bunker feel to it, but there's no Meathead, there's no undertone of, "Maybe this is wrong, and we should have some perspective on it." There's only racism, homophobia, and frankly some poorly paced and poorly written "comedy."

14. Errrrr...
I'm not QUITE sure if this show is Bush's fault. I mean, I blame him for a LOT of things, but even I draw the line at shitty sitcoms.

15. I like All in the Family
It had its good moments.

I think that sitcom taught America a lot.

16. All in the Family was liberal.
Carrol O'Conner was extremely progressive, and it was written with that in mind. Archie Bunker wasn't intended to be a paragon, but a clearly ignorant everyman. Of course, it helps that the show was actually WRITTEN WELL.

18. Norman Lear said he modeled the character after his own father.
And most of the men he grew up around in Queens.

19. Achie Bunker
Is a real classic TV show. It dealt with issues other shows of the day wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole and it did it in a real way which never the less was pretty damn funny.

5. Racism, homophobia, and horrible, horrible writing
Agreed. The homophobia all over the place is equally bothersome. Seriously, how did a show this. . . well, offensive and very, very bad (no originality here, it's like they smashed together every other bad live-action Fox sitcom ever)get a slot on the schedule? It makes last year's utterly dumb (but at least not racist or homophobic) "Life on a Stick" look like MASH.

If this lasts more than 4 episodes, I will be shocked and appalled.

8. i guess it's just poor writing
some jokes don't translate well to audiences unless they are told properly and through the right medium...'King of the Hill' or 'Family Guy' could have taken that plotline and made it very funny

9. Exactly.
In fact, I'm fairly certain those issues and plotlines were explored to far more successful ends in King of the Hill.

And on Family Guy, Brian has a date with a black woman. And Brian is awesome.

10. Hell, Family Guy IS doing the job better.
Brian is being extremely awkward with racism, and it doesn't seem weird or wrong or any crap like that. It's funny, it's fucking bizarre, but it's actually done WELL compared to that shitty show before.

17. "American Dad" is better at the All-in-the-Family game than this show.
Extreme right-wing father, hardcore liberal daughter, conservatism undermined, great humor (not Family Guy funny, but it's amusing), and there's Patrick Stewart!

20. What a piece of shit that show was.
Yeah - they went for the blatant racism and sex jokes and hey, a good dose of homophobia. I won't watch it again. But knowing the taste of the American public, I think they got a hit on their hands.

21. I just can't believe...
I just can't believe that that sort of racism is still considered acceptable on a national level. Why are we even considering it?
