Gandalf the Grey, said to Pippin (I think it was Pippin) in Return |
|
of the King, "there is always hope" as they prepared for battle against an army more immense than they could imagine but could fear. Hope. Help. There is always hope. Nothing is impossible. If God is with you, who can be against you? There comes a time when people are compelled to do the right thing. Courage. Justice. Peace.

1. Nope, it was Aragorn to the young boy just before Helm's Deep. |
|
"This is a good sword, Hallis son of Hamun."
*clasps the boy's shoulder*
"There is _always_ hope."

2. Yes, but I remember a moment on the tower where Gandalf |
|
had this brilliance in his eyes and could see that Pippin was terrified. Do you remember that? As the evil armies approached and the people prepared to fight.

PIPPIN: Is there any hope, Gandalf? For Frodo and Sam?
GANDALF: There never was any hope...just a fool's hope.

6. The line in that scene was this... |
|
Pippin: "I never thought it would end like this" Gandalf: "End? The journey doesn't end here. Death is but another path, one which we must all take. The grey veil of this life is lifted, and then you see it." Pippin: "See what Gandalf?" Gandalf: "White Shores... and beyond."
One of my favorite moments in that movie...

4. That wasn't the quote, I think it was...: |
|
"Pippin, put on this dress and wig. Maybe that way the hordes of victorious ogres will only ravage you, rather than roast you alive."
Or was that some other movie?
:P

There were a few moments in the movie where I think it brushed greatness. I'd need to watch it again to name them, but I recall them being there.

9. Oh yah, now I remember... |

I think it was National Lampoons "Bored of the Rings."
Actually, it wasn't a quote from that, but it should have been.
Anyone who has read the LOTR trilogy (yes, they were books before they became a movie, folks) should read "Bored of the Rings." It is Fantastic, and certainly keeps you from taking LOTR too seriously. (Good thing for me, as I do love LOTR.)

17. Bored of the Rings! I loved it |
|
It's got to be long out of print -- so glad other people remember it -- have my copy around here somewhere...
Anyway, it made me laugh -- good old Legolamb, I think they described him as quite light in the loafers -- not in the least PC but very funny after the great solemnity of 3 volumes of LOTR.
I love the Trilogy and read it to my son when he was in 3rd grade as a motivator for him to learn to love reading on his own. Yeah, I read the entire thing aloud, and we both loved it.
It was a long, long wait for LOTR to make it to be big screen, and it was worth the wait.
Considering what we were (and still are) dealing with in the world today, I think a lot of us drew inspiration and solace from the movie when it came. JRR Tolkien lived through terrible times himself and knew whereof he spoke.
My favorite bit from Fellowship was the exchange between Frodo and Gandalf deep in the Mines of Moria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FRODO: I wish the Ring had never come to me...I wish none of this had ever happened.
GANDALF: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
13. What about when Aragorn said in "Two Towers"... |
|
"Yet dawn is ever the hope of men."
A new day will always bring hope. Just hold on a little bit longer.
