Government is NOT the problem. BAD government is!
With the Republicans, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. "Government is the problem," said Reagan and then he appointed morons like James Watt to destroy the departments for which they had special animosity. "Government can't do everything--don't expect government to be there," says Bushco. And then they proceed to infest FEMA and other government departments with cockroaches like Brown and Chertoff, Bolton and Karen Hughes. In that sense, they have been very successful in their agenda to diminish government--they've made it ineffectual in every area they believe is not to their direct benefit--of which the military procurement system is.

1. That's key
This disaster was created by peopel who don't believe in the power of the United States Government to help people. And their ideology becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

2. nail on the head
This crowd has been dismantling all the mission-critical branches and agencies since the 70's.

Make sure that your anger is properly directed..

The disastrous performance of the federal government in this latest disaster was the result of it's capabilities being crippled by the "starve the beast" people.

Well guess what people..... WALL MART will not rescue you!

3. I totally agree...
This "government is the enemy" mentality that's dominated since the Reagan 80s has to go. If anything, the last few weeks have shown us how much we need an effective government that has its people as the top priority. The irony is that government is bigger than it's ever been - it's just not serving us, instead serving corporations and political hacks. It's a very sad state of affairs that's going to require some sort of people's movement to change.

4. Spot on. Another "interesting" fact
If "big gubmint" is the the culprit, then we have a problem. The current government is the biggest, most intrusive, most bloated and bureaucratic organization ever.

And yet, it's performing EVEN WORSE than when it was smaller.

So, we liberals have been vindicated. It's not BIG govenment we've been clamoring for (as every RWer claims), it's EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT government.
