Are we making too much of Nagin, Blanco, etc.?
What I mean by this is simple: the majority of the country is not paying attention to THEM.

They ARE paying attention to the fact that Bush fucked this up to a degree that even we thought impossible.

We wring hands over what some pundit said on some Sunday morning audience-of-three talk show, while around the water coolers people talk about what they saw on Oprah.

Limbaugh's audience is who they are - he will lose the hangers-on and be down to his core Bush is God audience - THAT is who he is playing to these days. Same with Fox. Let's watch the ratings.

Meanwhile, gas is approaching 4 bucks a gallon and more people than not know of someone who was affected by New Orleans. THEY are the ones America is listening to.

Keep the faith - the bastards are cornered like rats now, and they'll try anything. The fool is in a tank now, trying to pretend. DIck does New Orleans - AFTER he buys a house in Maryland.

People get this shit - they really do. It's taken many of them way too long, but they get it.

As you watch Karl and the boys throw mud everywhere, remember that they are now throwing mud into a mudslide, and that just ain't gonna work.

Fool me once, and, um ,er - well, something like that.

1. It's hard to know what people are paying attention to. I think
people at DU want to know the truth and avoid the spin that happens after these major events. I know I want to know the truth. That is hard to find.

2. It's tricky to know how to handle them
Because you have two factors.

1) Bush and his supporters clearly want to shift his responsibility for this tragedy away from him to them.

2) They clearly didn't do as good a job as they might have preparing and handling this tragedy.

It's hard to know exactly how to thread that particular needle, because people (including us) like simple stories with badguys and goodguys.

3. Great points--and oh, I hope and pray you are right!
I know of at least one die-hard Bush believer who said that if Michael Brown wasn't FIRED--not reassigned but fired--by the end of the day on Friday, she was done with Bush and crowd. And she's been a staunch "he's right no matter what" supporter. Let's hope her numbers are legion!

4. Most people that I talked to among the "others"
want very badly to blame it on the governor and the mayor. It is easy for them. They can see the buses standing there and dubya and FEMA on tour and blame the state. They are not likely to dig into the nuanced details that FEMA and the president of the United States is supposed to be at the ready to respond in such cases. The media is still on dubcos side.
