Baby Born to Brain-Dead Va. Woman Dies
Baby Born to Brain-Dead Va. Woman Dies

Monday September 12, 2005 5:31 PM

By MATTHEW BARAKAT

Associated Press Writer

McLEAN, Va. (AP) - Susan Anne Catherine Torres, who was born Aug. 2 to a severely brain-damaged woman who carried the pregnancy for three months while kept on life support, died Sunday night in Washington, her family said in an email Monday.

The Torres family said in a statement that Susan died of heart failure after emergency surgery to repair a perforated intestine. A spokeswoman at St. Rita's Church in Alexandria said parishioners were told of the child's death during the morning Mass.

The infant's condition had deteriorated rapidly over the weekend, according to the family.

The girl was born Aug. 2, two months premature after a harrowing pregnancy in which the mother, Susan Rollin Torres, was kept on life support for more than three months after a dormant melanoma spread to her brain and left her unconscious since May. The mother died shortly after her daughter's birth when she was taken off life support.

1. That's so sad.
I remember hearing about this. Usually they can save babies that premature.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. It must be absolutely heartbreaking to lose two family members so close together in such awful circumstances.

3. That's weird. I was just thinking about this last night.
I was wondering how it worked out. Unfortunately, I would have to say, not well.

6. Sounds like she developed NEC - one of the things you fear most when
taking care of premies in the NICU.
NEC = necrotizing enterocolitis

7. That just freaking sucks big time
The only thing from all this was the baby, the life of the baby. That is what the Mother wanted and died for. It is such a freaking shame, I swear, it's so sad. My heart goes out to the family....

15. Is a very sad story, I can't even imagine...
It's sadder that the family is facing seemingly insurmountable bills (per http://www.susantorresfund.org, $400k - $1 million). If you can spare anything at this point, please consider it.

17. In Memoria Susan Anne Catherine Torres: Aug 2, 2005 - Sept. 11, 2005

With great sadness, we are asking for your prayers for the repose of the soul of 5 week old baby Susan Ann Torres. She passed away last night after surgery for a perforated intestine. Please include in your prayers a request for the peace and comfort of her family, especially Jason Torres, who has had a very difficult past several months.
