Senator Boxer throws us a bone in her reply to me about investigating
how the White House handled this emergency. Of course, when I put C-SPAN on today, neither house in Congress seems to be concerned about the urgency of this. Instead the House is holding confirmation hearings for John Roberts to be named Chief Justice :wtf:

Dear Mrs. XXXX:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Like many of you, I am extremely upset about the Bush Administration's appallingly slow response to assist the victims of this tragedy. The people who have suffered so much in the wake of this tragedy deserve better from their government and need to know that we will help them rebuild their lives, homes, and communities.

Congress needs to build on its appropriations of $62.3 billion in aid for the affected areas with a long-term plan for recovery and rebuilding. That is why I am proud to support the Katrina Emergency Relief Program, which will provide medical coverage, housing, educational aid, and financial assistance for survivors.

In addition, Congress must fulfill its oversight responsibility by holding hearings on the Administration's response to this tragedy. We also need to establish an independent commission to investigate what went wrong and how to prevent a tragedy of this magnitude from happening again. Furthermore, Michael Brown, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), must go. He has demonstrated that he does not have the experience needed to do this job.

Finally, I would like to invite you to visit my website, which has links and information about emergency assistance and ways you can help with the relief efforts. You can find this feature at http://boxer.senate.gov/news/katrina.cfm .

Hurricane Katrina has shown a spotlight on the best and worst of America . I know the people of this nation will come together during this critical time to help those who need it most. And I will keep working to help get us moving in the right direction again.

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

I didn't even get a reply from DiFi or Cong. Bill Thomas. I guess, we the people, don't even count anymore.

1. Boxer's bones are very nutritious
I wrote to Barbara Boxer, attempting to make some headway in my friend Maria's decade-long attempts to get permanent residency (even though she's a taxpayer, a home owner, etc, you know the story - because she's Latino, no dice). Anyway, I received a polite email saying that Senator Boxer would "make inquiries". And I thought "yeah, right, thanks for nothing".

Well, two weeks later, Maria received her permanent residency after ten years of constant attempts to get it. Boxer did what three immigration attorneys failed to do.

She's cool by me. I think if anyone is going to hold their feet to the fire, it's going to be Senator Boxer.

4. I believe she would go to bat for you. I also found
our ex-gov. Grey Davis to help people on an individual basis too. Look what they did to him.

2. This part
need to establish an independent commission to
investigate what went wrong and how to prevent
a tragedy of this magnitude from happening again.

Is telling that a coverup is in the works

we had an IC for JFK
we had an IC for Iran/contra
we had an IC for 9/11

they all produced obfuscation

and noone was really held responsible

no this needs to go straight to a grand Jury(preferably a runaway GJ)

for any chance of accountability

3. I so agree with you and I don't know how to make this happen.
Barbara is being far more cautious in her words than she has been in the past. I wonder if the Rove machine has threatened her and her family too?

5. I have always gotten responses
when writing to my own reps, but let me tell you - sometimes it takes weeks.
