1. I heard that Ray Nagin |
|
gave New Orleans the evacuation order 20 hours before it hit. I heard it on Face the Nation yesterday. I noticed that Nagin did not correct what's his face on it.

Do you mean the mandatory evac of NO? That was the morning of Sunday the 28th.

3. I'll try, based on what I recall. The hurricane hit early Monday morning. |
|
Saturday there was a voluntary evacuation of NO and mandatory evacuation of the parishes south of the city, the ones at greatest risk from the storm surge. Sunday was the mandatory evacuation of NO. If I recall correctly, there was some explanation at the time that the mandatory evacuations were staged like that to give the people south of NO a better chance of getting out without causing gridlock. But I haven't reviewed the stories, am just basing this on my recollection.

6. Evacuations were called for on Saturday |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 02:24 PM by DoYouEverWonder
but Mandatory evacuations were ordered Sunday morning. 80% of the people in the city did manage to get out ahead of the storm, so this goes down has a very successful evacuation.
Keep in mind that a mandatory evacuation has never before been called for New Orleans because they didn't think they even had half a chance to get the people out so why make it mandatory.
Second, there are guidelines issued by the National Weather Service as to when to issue what sort of evacuation based on how far out the storm is, the strength and where the projected landfall is.
Remember the storm had only been in the Gulf for about 3 days before it made landfall and they still got 80% of the people out. That is one of the big reasons why we are seeing such a low death toll.

8. I thought it was the saturday before the hurricane hit but I could be |
|
mistaken. But he and the governor were giving press conferences quite often before that, imo that should have given most people a heads up to start packing.
