Man, we've got some ignorant Senators (on the right). |

That's twice now that I've heard one of them say that Roberts has been nominated to be "Chief Justice of the United States."
Well, now Leahy just said it, too. It's spreading.

that he would be Chief Justice of.
The country itself doesn't have a "Chief Justice." It's not a cabinet position.

6. Read the Wikipedia article |
|
the title was changed by US Code at the suggestion of Salmon P. Chase, to indicate the judicial branch's co-equality with the other branches.
Associate Justices are officially "Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States" but the Chief's title is, by law, "Chief Justice of the United States".

Well, I stand corrected, then.
Gotta beg to differ with Chase, though.

don't feel bad - it's a very obscure point of knowledge. I just happened to know it because I had occasion to look it up recently when I read a reference to the title, and it didn't look right to me, either.
But... if you think about it... he IS the Chief Justice of the United States - he oversees the federal judiciary. I really don't have a problem with the title.

something like this goes on, I am astounded by the intellectual gap between our Dems and the bacteria on the Wingnut side. LEAHY, KENNEDY, BIDEN, FEINGOLD, KOHL, FEINSTEIN...were BRILLIANT. Too bad they're voting this JERK in.
