Wash Post exposed shilling for WH re: Blanco smear, issues retraction....
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 04:39 PM by henslee
Following snip is from this Village voice article...
http://villagevoice.com/news/0537,rozen,67724,2.html
(snip)

On Sunday, September 4, the Washington Post quoted an anonymous White House source as saying that in the critical days as New Orleans was filling with water, the White House was prevented from sending federal assistance to aid flood victims because of a technicality—Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco had not declared a state of emergency. On its face, the claim seemed absurd—thousands of New Orleanians were left to drown, dehydrate, and starve because of a technicality? And indeed, only hours later, the Post was forced to publish an above-the-story correction revealing how badly they had been burned by their anonymous White House source:

Correction to This Article:

A Sept. 4 article on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina incorrectly said that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) had not declared a state of emergency. She declared an emergency on Aug. 26. "

The quote may have revealed a blatant White House effort to steer the "blame game" toward the Democratic governor (all the while directing the White House and its supporters to respond to critics, as if in chorus, with variations of the pious phrase, "Now's not the time to play the blame game.")

6. They lie, knowing that the truth is documented, the lie will be outed.
But it doesn't matter because the MSM doesn't make a big deal about the debunking, just about the lie.

3. Actually this is not unlike the Clintons trashed WH meme spread by BushInc
to drive down Clinton's positives and distract from his selection to office by the Supreme Assholes.

They will do anything to distort the real pictures that prove they are INCOMPETENT and EVIL.

And to this day, no photos of that alleged vandalism.

8. Thanks, here is the second article that has been circulated
with the blame to local/state officials.

Blame Amid the Tragedy
Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin failed their constituents.

BY BOB WILLIAMS
Wednesday, September 7, 2005 12:01 a.m. EDT

"As the devastation of Hurricane Katrina continues to shock and sadden the nation, the question on many lips is, Who is to blame for the inadequate response?

As a former state legislator who represented the legislative district most impacted by the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, I can fully understand and empathize with the people and public officials over the loss of life and property.

Many in the media are turning their eyes toward the federal government, rather than considering the culpability of city and state officials. I am fully aware of the challenges of having a quick and responsive emergency response to a major disaster. And there is definitely a time for accountability; but what isn't fair is to dump on the federal officials and avoid those most responsible--local and state officials who failed to do their job as the first responders. The plain fact is, lives were needlessly lost in New Orleans due to the failure of Louisiana's governor, Kathleen Blanco, and the city's mayor, Ray Nagin....."

9. But of course, just as with the Iraq WMDs and Saddam's role in the 9/11
attacks, it's the up-front lies most Americans will remember and believe. That retraction - a MAJOR story in its own right - is buried in small print and will be seen by very few. As was the intention from the start, the propaganda piece smearing Blanco is what will stay in the minds of Americans. That lying article will be cited again and again, without the retraction.

Beyond shameful. We need many, many LTTEs and not only to the Wash Post. Let's see them in the NYT, the LAT, and local papers too. THIS is how propaganda is pushed, and it must be stopped NOW.

Wonder who that "senior Bush Administration official" was? You KNOW that person was affiliated with Rove, because the disinformatin campaign was ordered by Rove. There is no reason why anyone would trust anything said by such a person unless they were willing accomplices to the lies.

12. they protect the lying Bush admin. source
but they print the name of the 30 year old lawyer that provided them damaging information about Karl Rove, and that lawyer ended up getting fired in retaliation.

THAT would have been the source to protect.

Even worse, they tricked her and misquoted her. They didn't tell her they were asking about Rove, then wrote the story as if she were commenting on Rove. They printed a correction, but the lawyer is still just as fired.

18. The NYT did this, too--printed lies about Iraq WMDs, day after day, got
their war going, then, long AFTER the invasion, printed a half-assed apology for not checking Judith Miller's "sources."

Scumbags.

---------

There's really not much we can do about it, until we recover our right to vote. Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor,' I say! (--or a Louisiana levee might do). Goddamned war profiteers are controlling the vote tabulation, with SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code. Get rid of these machines NOW!

LTTEs are fine and good, but we've lost our mechanism of democratic power. That's why no one is listening to the people, and to the clear majority on the war and everything else. They don't have to!

Recover our right to vote, and you'll see American journalism improve real fast--for fear of our busting up their diabolical news monopolies.

19. "Diebold and ES&S...
...election theft machines into Boston Harbor."

Excellent theme for a mass protest. This would really resonate with the vast majority of America. The problem, as always, would be drawing media attention. Call it the Boston T Party (T as in Touchscreen).

22. I don't understand...
If the media is tired of getting feed lines of BS that they later have to retract, maybe they should put their sources on notice, "Feed me the truth, I'll keep your identity confidential; feed me BS, my retraction will include your name and what you told me, along with the correct information.
