Bush wants congress to give him authority for state takeover
during a crisis. Did anyone hear this a few minutes ago. It was either on Fox or MSNBC, but the phone rang and I was distracted.

The repukes are going to use this disaster to steal billions of taxpayer dollars and pass all kinds of nasty legislation.

1. And I assume THEY determine whether it's a crisis or not.
Guess this means that martial law is on the march...

3. Guess he's still pissed that Blanco
didn't give up her state.

Why would anyone give Bush any more power then he already has?

If BushCo had kept control of the disaster response, New Orleans would look like Fallujah soon.

8. Why doesn't Bush want us all to vote? Does he hate our
FREEDOM? I thought he was all about "Democracy?" That's what he says and that is what most Republicans say.

6. Everything turns into a power grab. The protofascist assumption
is that the messiness of having to comply with "laws" and "rights" keeps Bush from getting the trains to run on time.

But the facts are these: Bush didn't use the power he already had, at least to help people. But everything turns into a reason to concentrate more power in El Duce, God/Bush, the Commander in Chief. The protofascists see it as the cure for the problem that ails us.

Of course, Mussolini didn't make the trains run on time. But he did stop people from complaining about it, didn't he?

7. So much for States' Rights
Rethugs used to be in favor of strong state and local government and smaller federal government. And wasn't the Civil War partly about states' rights?
Now they want to take over an entire state?

Our nation's founders must be spinning in their graves

13. LIHOP, anyone?
Let the chaos and mishandling happen on purpose, to create confusion, frustration, and finger-pointing? This way, he can step in and say "from now on, I will have control", and the public will fawn over him as he moves on another bold step to seize complete control.

14. He's just trying to prove that NO wasn't
his fault...if he had the authority for state takeover, NOLA wouldn't have fallen into the hands of incompetant local authorities. Just the usual Rove bull.

18. Wouldn't this part of the Constitution deter this?
"Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

It's been years since I studied the Constitution beyond the first few Amendmants but I don't recall Congress having the power to take away a State governments rights and give the President.

At this point in the game, seeing Bush's total incompetence during this crisis and with the American people waking up and being a bit peeved I would think that would not actually be approved without a HUGE fight and not just in Congress but by each state's government, they're not about to give up their power easily.
